The views Adhania had regarding many of its customs could be said to be almost contradictory to its practices. For instance, it propagated free mingling with other people's mistresses, encouraging them to enjoy each other in the most lustful ways possible.

However at the same time, it weirdly punished these same mistresses if they tried to approach men out of their own desire, labelling them as being too wanton.

The idea seemed to be that they should only serve at their husband's behest but never go beyond that- like they were simply puppets with no desire of their own. Some lords even restricted their wives on grounds of security- afraid of what family secret she might spill in her throes of passion. 

Reality of course could never be so neat. 

And the ladies who were truly determined found various ways to bend around this restriction.
