Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Want to Be Friends?

Yu Xiaolian gave a smug smile, "This girl knows a lot of things. How about it, want to be friends with me?"

Su Jingchen erected a barrier in his heart, always feeling that Yu Xiaolian had some ulterior motive towards him. But he couldn't figure out what was worth her plotting against him for.

Seeing Su Jingchen deep in thought, Yu Xiaolian directly grabbed his hand and placed the pill in his palm, then hopped onto Jiang Lin's ox cart and left.

"Xiaolian, who was that person just now? Male or female?"

Goodness, Jiang Lin was even more clueless, couldn't even tell if the person was male or female.

Was Su Jingchen really that bewitching? Bewitching to the point where you couldn't distinguish between male and female?

"Male!"

"Male? Why would a guy cover his face like a woman?"

"Pfft..." Yu Xiaolian couldn't help but laugh. Ancient times didn't have dust masks, after all.

They drove the ox cart to the east side of the market and saw Mrs. Sun standing on tiptoe, looking around their way with quite a few things placed on the ground.

The things Mrs. Sun bought were all discussed in advance with Yu Xiaolian. To take out the items from her space openly, so there's no limit on refills, Mrs. Sun only bought a small amount of everything.

It looked like a lot, but in reality, the quantity was small, and they were all wrapped in oil paper, making them look bulky.

Loading all the things Mrs. Sun bought onto the cart, the three of them prepared to head home.

Yu Xiaolian specifically asked Jiang Lin where his favorite biscuit shop was located and bought two catties of biscuits for Jiang Lin when they passed by.

However, she didn't buy any for her own home, as she already had them in her space.

With Mrs. Sun assisting her, Yu Xiaolian could easily wrap these items in oilpaper and take them out.

As for the oil paper, Mrs. Sun had already bought a thick stack as instructed by Yu Xiaolian and put it in the basket. She only needed to secretly put the oil paper into her space when Jiang Lin was driving the cart.

Mrs. Sun specifically bought many small white bottles to dispense toothpaste and her favorite face cream, as well as shower gel and shampoo. As long as these items were re-packaged, no one could tell whether they were modern or ancient.

Putting the small white bottles away, she then took out two pure white cotton towels and put them in the basket for future use to wipe the face.

She took out three small white porcelain spoons, three plain, patternless porcelain cups, washing powder, women's underwear, dried fruit, preserves, a big bag of eggs, and fruit candies with changed packaging...

Yu Xiaolian's consciousness shuttled back and forth between the ox cart and her space, busy and happy.

Like a diligent little bee, afraid of missing something.

Hmm, she took out two electric blankets and cut off the wires, one for a single bed, and one for a double bed. When the weather gets cold in a few days, she would lay one, and Mrs. Sun and Yu Changhe would lay the other.

Her supermarket only had these electric blankets, no wool blankets.

Although she was not afraid of cold, it was only for a certain period of time. Her body would activate its protective mechanism. If she were put in a fridge for a few days, she would surely freeze to death.

The Old Yu wouldn't allow them to eat the vegetables from the backyard garden, so they mainly ate wild vegetables. Yu Xiaolian had long wanted to eat some eggplants, beans, cucumbers, and the like.

Hmm, put, put, put into the basket.

Until Mrs. Sun stopped her hand and shook her head, Yu Xiaolian finally stopped.

Oh, how I wish I could take everything out and use it openly.

God knows if buying so many things, Yu Changhe would say they were wasting money?

Yu Xiaolian had mentioned to Mrs. Sun that she wanted to tell Yu Changhe, after all, Yu Changhe was so good to her, he surely wouldn't betray her.

But Mrs. Sun said that if Yu Changhe had money, he would reminisce about Old Yu. It's not comfortable for him to eat well while his parents live frugally, Yu Changhe wouldn't ignore that.

If Old Yu knew they had money or this kind of supermarket space, the household wouldn't be peaceful. Who knows, Old Yu might blabber about it and the whole village would know.

Yu Xiaolian felt that Mrs. Sun certainly understood Yu Changhe and Old Yu better than she did. Listening to her surely wasn't wrong.

Jiang Lin kept driving the ox cart and took them to the gate of the Yu Family.

At high noon, there was no one in the yard. Probably Old Yu was also taking a nap at this time. Mrs. Sun picked up the basket and darted into her own room.

Yu Changhe wasn't there, probably went to the mountain to cut willow branches again.

Mrs. Sun took out the items one by one, putting away what needed to be put away, and displaying what needed to be displayed.

Yu Xiaolian, taking advantage of Yu Changhe's absence, filled up the rice bag and took out a five-pound bag of flour to pour into the newly bought flour.

Mrs. Sun had bought a pound of rapeseed oil at the oil press, just a bottom of a jar. Yu Xiaolian opened a five-pound bucket of non-GMO cold-pressed rapeseed oil and gurgled it into the jar.

Mrs. Sun stopped her, "That's enough. Your dad is easy to fool, but if your grandma comes to rummage through, we're in trouble."

Yu Xiaolian took out a lock with six small keys. "From now on, when we're not home, we'll lock the door so Grandma can't come in and snoop."

Mrs. Sun saw the new contraption, "Is this a lock? Why does it look like this?"

Yu Xiaolian demonstrated to Mrs. Sun how to use the lock, and Mrs. Sun exclaimed how simple and convenient it was, "But... we don't seem to have this kind of lock here?"

"Mom, can't you lie? Just say it was sold by a Western merchant in town. For anything we can't explain, always say that."

"What if they ask where the Western merchant's shop is?"

"Just say he's a traveling merchant, left after selling off his stock."

Mrs. Sun nodded with a smile, thinking this strategy was good, that's how they'll do it.

That said, she didn't need to bother with repackaging her toothpaste and toothbrushes, she could use them openly since they were sold by a Western merchant after all.

Yu Xiaolian and Mrs. Sun clicked perfectly together, happily spinning in circles in the room.

Suddenly there were footsteps outside, Yu Xiaolian peeked out the window, surprisingly seeing Yu Changfu bringing Mrs. Cao back, but there was no sign of Yu Ziyi.

As soon as Mrs. Cao returned, Old Yu began to curse, "Taking some copper coins from you is like taking your life, you even dared to go back to your family. Do you still want your son to continue studying?

Leaving all this work inside and out to an old lady like me, how could you?"

Old Yu's father spoke up, "Alright, she just got back, don't chase her away again."

If she's chased away, there's no one to cook and do the laundry.

"These days, I've been feeding the chickens, feeding the pigs, cooking, and doing laundry, I'm exhausted, and you still won't let me grumble a bit."

Old Yu was indeed pleased with Mrs. Cao's return but was displeased with Mrs. Cao's defiance and delay in coming back.

Old Yu's father looked at Mrs. Cao, "Don't be like your mother, you know all these years, she's the type that yells when she's tired. Where's Yige'er? Why didn't he come back with you?"

Yu Ziyi took a liking to a girl in the village of Mrs. Cao's family, hanging around the girl's house every day, rushing to help with chores. Mrs. Cao called him home, but he wouldn't come, as he was grown and without a mother's control, Mrs. Cao had no choice but to come back alone.

"Yige'er still wants to stay at his grandma's for some more days."

"Oh," Old Yu's father wasn't concerned, "In these coming days, get Yongyu's betrothal gifts prepared with your mother, and settle the engagement with the Qi Family sooner."

"Dad, the girl from the Qi Family asks for twenty taels as a bride price, where do we have the money for that now?"
