Chapter 3 - Wrong Place Wrong Time

He gripped his phone, his knuckles turning white. He felt the smooth, hard surface of the phone case beneath his fingertips. The cover was plastered with silly anime girl faces, their exaggerated features a reminder of his geeky passions. He typed a message to Kevin, eager to share his news. He hesitated, unsure of how to articulate his feelings without revealing too much.

"D-dude, come on," he typed, his fingers stumbling over the keys. "Let's not talk inappropriate about my girl, man. What you mean by ample ass–" He trailed off, a bead of sweat trickling down his cheek. Then he heard screams, a long, drawn-out slashing sound, a choking sound, and the thud of a body hitting the floor.

"Huh?" he muttered, confused and disbelieving. He lost his balance, falling backward and landing on his bottom with a loud smack. He felt the cold, hard floor against his skin. The school bell rang, then again. It was time for homeroom. His fingers were frozen on the keyboard. He had accidentally hit enter, sending his unfinished message to Kevin. He saw the string of "e"s plastered across the screen. He opened the door to the next room.

He saw the blood, the crimson liquid staining the pale linoleum. He felt it soaking into his shoes. He saw a strange, attractive girl standing over Miyuki Aizawa, who lay dead in a pool of blood, her throat slit. He heard her choking, gurgling sounds. He saw her trying to call for help, her hand reaching out weakly. He felt a surge of empathy for her. He watched her faint, her body going limp. He recognized the girl as Sora. He gulped, his throat dry and constricted. He ended the call with Kevin, raising his hands in a gesture of surrender. He walked backward, his steps slow and hesitant.

"L-look, you look pretty," he stammered. "And whatever happened, I understand. She was a bully, an egotistical bastard. I won't tell anyone, okay? I'm just here to ask out my girlfriend, that's it." He saw the blood dripping from the knife in her hand. He felt his legs growing weak.
