Gods
The common room was rowdy with mercenaries and adventurers, attracted by the war to Bea iiz, even at this hour. Late noon. Sin frowned as he spotted Viesh spent at the counter when he entered the tavern. "Hoi!" The boy said as he drew closer, shaking the man. "Wake up it's noon man!"
Viesh stirred but didn't wake. The boy frowned then decided fuck it, Viesh could nap there all day long, he hoped some cutpurse rob him too. Though knowing who the man's, that was highly unlikely. That was what irritated him more about the whole thing too. He was sure the man was aware of him and just didn't care to answer him.
Sin went out of the common room going upstairs. He dodged a tavern maid hurrying with blankets and another with a bucket and mop before making it to Mui's room. "Come," the girl said immediately he knocked.
He found her on the small bed going through a stack of pictures. "What are you doing?" He asked.
The room was mostly empty beside the bed and the cloths spilling from the open wardrobe. Mui lifted her head to look at him, black locks spilling beside her face, her eyes were violet and blind like every Eyeless servant.
"You can't see," Sin added staring pointedly at the pictures.
"Feeling," she said quietly.
"What's there to feel?"
"Location, can't find him."
"Oh," Sin picked a picture to see a sketching of Sin in his coat and with his sword hung on his waist. "Where did you get this?"
"Titi gave me. She drew him after we met him at Kingsground."
"Oh," Sin didn't know their powers but this Titi must have an ability that let her see without her eyes.
"I.... Think," Mui continued, "I need a more personal thing to track him. Like hair lock or blood or an item of clothing,"
"Not here," Sin shrugged. "Resfiya destroyed every belonging of his she didn't carry with her. Jack might have some but we can't involve him in this matter for obvious reason. Maybe we can find some in the academy, or Tarin. There's also this girl he's really close with,"
"The Fen princess?" Mui said with some disdain. You could hear it in her voice. Royalty? While you are just nobles?
"Not her," Sin shook his head, "Kara. She's probably in Swornhalf by now though, they were heading there with the lowborn girl when I left Tarin," here he grinned playfully. "Or maybe we could just go to V'alkre and track him down the old fashioned way."
Mui smiled a little then shook her head. "No Sinny, my powers is more accurate. We could stop at the academy on our way east," Sin frowned in thought. "What?" Mui asked sensing his emotion.
The boy shook his head, "I was just thinking," he said.
"Of what?"
"You said you needed something personal, something that belongs to Saint....."
"Yes?"
"What about his name?"
Mui fell in thought frowning. "That might work," she said hesitantly after sometime. "Never thought of it, let's see," she folded her legs on the bed and closed her eyes ready to start scrying but someone suddenly knocked at the door. Her eyes opened widely. Mouthing to Sin to stay silent. "Who's there?"
"Its me," Baron Joe said. "Can I come in?"
Mui gestured at the wardrobe and Sin rushed there and hid, pulling the door closed silently. Meanwhile Mui answered. "Changing cloths!... Ah! Enter,"
The ancestor walked in. He was wearing a black coat and hat, Sin saw through the crack between the wardrobe doors. The baron took off his hat and waved it in the air by habit studying the room with his eyes. Sin desperately hoped the man hadn't heard his voice earlier. It was not an unfounded hope as the life prolonging technique the Highvoid ancestors used usually dampen their senses. Baron Joe is almost blind and deaf as it is, and he had failed to identify bacon by its smell in breakfast one time.
"Good afternoon ancestor," Mui bowed nervously.
"Rise little one," Baron Joe said taking a sit on her bed. "Come, sit with me," Mui sat quietly beside him. "Have you prepared for the task ahead?"
"En," she nodded.
"Good, good. But I need a favor from you girl."
"What is it ancestor?"
"Ah, drop the ancestor little one call me baron Joe, I prefer it. Anyway you are going to mute that kid and I want to come with you.... Of course Jack can not know about it, it's one thing to order for a child's death and it's another to do it myself as an ancestor, it'll just bring bad publicity."
"...?"
"Yeah, so I want you to hide me among your helpers. I'll not interfere with your work I promise unless he's escaping."
Mui frowned. "You don't trust me ancestor?"
"Ah? Of course I do. But that kid, there's.... I just want to see him up close and tell him off before you end him."
"No problem ancestor," Mui smiled. "We'll be leaving first light tomorrow, don't be late,"
"You cheeky brat," baron Joe laughed. "I'll be in your care then . See you." He patted her gingerly on the head and left. Mui watched him go then breathed a sigh when he disappeared.
Sin finally escaped the confines of the wardrobe. He had an ugly frown on his face. "What was that about?" He asked.
"I don't know," Mui answered. "But I do not like it,"
"Yeah..... Do you think we should tell Viesh?"
"Ah, no, are you stupid Sin? Besides I suspect Viesh has ways to find out and we'd be only making it official. I think ancestor is underestimating Jack and Viesh,"
"Or maybe we are underestimating him,"
"Maybe....." And she frowned deeper.
"How has he been doing?" Resfiya asked staring at the camp fire. The army had camped outside Halr just like Viktora had told them.
"Impressively," Kina shrugged. "He's taking care of everything good enough. He's a wise kid, wise beyond his years I'd say for certain. Jack Highvoid would be proud."
"You think?"
"Come on mistress, he's his kid,"
"Then why.....?"
Suddenly Celestine walked over causing them to cut off their conversation. "Hi aunty," the princess said, "ah, am I interrupting something?"
"Nah," Resfiya smiled kindly, "we were just talking about Sainty, come Estine, tell me what he has been about,"
Celestine came over and sat on the log opposite both women and pouted as she poked the fire with a branch. "Why would I want to speak of a bastard like that?"
"Ah, bastard? That's no way to speak of your fiancee young lady,"
Celestine ignored her. Resfiya glanced at the rest of the camp___ A scattering of tents and soldiers before camp fires___ and sighed. A few patrolled the area.
"Okay fine, what had he done to you sweetheart?"
Celestine folded her hands across her chest and looked away. "He's flirting with other girls behind my back. And he's stupid and dumb. And..... A while back he put his life in danger because of a prank involving me that someone played on him,"
"What are you talking about?"
"You didn't tell her?" Celestine asked Kina aghast.
"I was going to," the maid complained defensively.
"You were?" Resfiya questioned. "What is this thing about?"
Celestine frowned then related the story. How Saint had found a message promising her in danger, how he reacted, and what it did to him. Resfiya's face was getting stonier and stonier by the moments and had turned ice cold in the end. "That's why I was angry with him. Worse the loaf head didn't apologies to me, he just replaced me with Kara!" The princess finished.
"Kina you'll be punished," Resfiya said finally with gritted teeth.
"Yes mistress,"
Fire started burning vengefully in Resfiya's hands. Jack, she thought, you think I'll let you off easily if you kill my son? You are lucky he's alright I'd have gone to Void and rip your throat. She nodded as she came to a decision and turned back to Kina. "Go to him at Wali, and make sure he's safe and is not flirting with young ladies this time!"
"Yes mistress!" Kina said frightenedly, then immediately turned into an eagle and shot into the sky.
Resfiya watched the sky till the maid disappeared. In the end she wasn't sending her to protect her son but to prevent him from flirting with other girls. Jack had gave her his words, he does not want his son dead. Or even wants him for anything though. She sighed.
Ah, be good my boy.
