Chapter 46 - THE ORIGINAL PAGE

Adrian pushed against the door.

Locked.

I turned toward my uncle.

"What do you want?"

He held up the agreement.

"Your trust."

"You already know it's mine."

"I don't want the trust."

My eyes narrowed.

"Then what?"

"I want what was taken from me."

"What?"

"My family."

I stared at him.

"You destroyed your own family."

His face changed.

For the first time, the calm mask disappeared.

"You don't know what happened that night."

"Then tell me."

He opened the folder.

"The fire wasn't supposed to happen."

I froze.

"You said you started it."

"I ordered a small fire in one section of the warehouse. I wanted the money hidden there."

My stomach turned.

"You put everyone in danger."

"I didn't know Samuel was inside."

"Richard was there."

"I didn't know he would come."

"And Lily?"

His eyes shifted.

"I didn't know the baby was there."

I felt sick.

"You're lying."

"No."

He pulled out a photograph.

It showed my mother holding baby Lily.

Behind her stood Richard.

And behind Richard—

my uncle.

My breath caught.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"Then why did you disappear?"

"Because someone betrayed me."

"Who?"

He looked at Adrian.

"His father."

Adrian stiffened.

"My father?"

"Richard discovered what I had done."

My uncle's voice became bitter.

"He threatened to expose me."

"And you tried to silence him?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"I tried to scare him."

He removed a single sheet from the folder.

"This is the original final page."

My eyes moved across the writing.

Three signatures.

Then one name.

My heart stopped.

I knew the name.

I looked at my uncle.

"No…"

He nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who is it?"

I couldn't speak.

My uncle smiled.

"The person who ordered the fire…"

He pointed at the name.

"…wasn't me."
