I stared at the paper.
My hands trembled.
The name was clear.
Impossible.
"No."
Adrian took the document from me.
His eyes widened.
"That's…"
"Yes," my uncle said.
I shook my head.
"You forged this."
My uncle laughed.
"Why would I forge a document that destroys me?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Who is it?"
I whispered the name.
"Victor."
Silence.
Victor.
The man my father trusted.
The man who had supposedly been working for my uncle.
The man who had been disappearing whenever we got close to the truth.
My uncle shook his head.
"Victor didn't work for me."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"He worked for himself."
Adrian's face hardened.
"Then why did you blame him?"
"Because he wanted me to."
My blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?"
My uncle stepped closer.
"Victor knew about the fortune. He knew about Richard's daughter. He knew the trust would eventually belong to you."
"So he started the fire?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To eliminate everyone who could expose him."
I looked down at the document again.
"But Samuel survived."
"And that's why Victor spent ten years trying to find him."
My heart raced.
"Where is Samuel?"
My uncle smiled.
"You're asking the wrong question."
"What should I ask?"
He leaned closer.
"Ask where Victor is now."
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice whispered:
"You finally found my name."
My blood froze.
"Victor?"
A low laugh.
"Good girl."
The call ended.
Adrian immediately grabbed my hand.
"We're leaving."
Then the church lights came on.
And I saw Victor standing at the entrance.
Holding a gun.
