Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: I don’t know you

The sun rose slowly over the jagged peaks that framed the forest, casting long, wavering shadows across the ground. Swift stirred, his senses alert even in sleep. The night had been long, haunted by faint whispers and unidentifiable movements in the underbrush. Danny Chan was already awake, practicing fluid katas beside the stream, the steel of his twin sais catching the morning light. His movements were precise, disciplined—each strike and pivot executed with the sharpness of a blade's edge.

Swift watched silently, his mind racing. They had survived the night, but the tension between them was palpable. Danny's trust had not come easily; in fact, it was barely there at all.

"You move well," Swift said finally, breaking the silence. "But I can't tell if it's skill or fear."

Danny stopped mid-strike, his expression hardened. "Why do you care?" he replied sharply, sheathing one sai and letting the other hang loosely at his side. "You've survived your battles, your world is gone, and yet you seem to expect me to… what? Fall in line and trust a stranger from another world? I don't know you, Swift. Not the real you. And I won't put my life on the line for someone I barely know."

Swift sighed and stepped closer, the weight of his armor making the movement heavy. "I expected as much. I would mistrust me, too, if I were in your shoes." He paused, letting the tension hang between them. "But we have a common enemy. Bones is here, and he won't care if you trust me or not. He will destroy this world just like he did mine. If we fail, no one survives. Not your clan, not this planet, not even me."

Danny narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing Swift. The green star embedded in his chestplate pulsed faintly, an eerie light that flickered with his heartbeat. "You say you're here to fight him. But how do I know this isn't… some kind of trick? That you aren't leading me straight into his hands?"

Swift shook his head. "I am not a fool. Bones destroyed everything I loved. My world is gone because of him. I have no reason to betray you. I only want to stop him. To survive. If I can't, I won't survive either."

Danny exhaled slowly, still watching him intently. "Talk is cheap. Actions… that's what I need to see."

Swift smirked faintly. "Then we act. There's a lead—sedge hat. He's involved, I can feel it. And if we don't find him first, we'll be chasing shadows while Bones manipulates from the shadows."

Danny's eyes flickered with curiosity despite his caution. "Sedge hat? That old man you met before? He's… connected to this? You're certain?"

Swift nodded, his hand tapping against the red star on his armor. "I don't know how, but he's no ordinary spirit or wanderer. I saw him in visions—he interacts with this world in ways I don't fully understand. And if he's here, he may hold knowledge or power that Bones could exploit. We can't ignore him."

Danny crossed his arms, pacing slightly. "So… we go find some eccentric old man who eats other people's food and disappears into the forest? And you expect me to trust that you won't get us killed in the process?"

Swift chuckled lightly, despite the tension. "Look, I don't expect you to trust me immediately. You're cautious. I respect that. But if we work together, you'll see I can survive, and more importantly, I can help you survive. That's the best evidence I can offer."

Danny considered him for a long moment, then finally spoke. "Fine. But one slip, one mistake… and I'll treat you as an enemy. You understand?"

Swift's smile widened faintly. "Crystal clear."

With their uneasy alliance established, they moved deeper into the forest. The terrain shifted constantly, from dense undergrowth to rocky clearings, and Swift's senses were constantly alert. The residual presence of Bones lingered faintly, a cold vibration beneath the earth that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. He knew the entity was close, perhaps even closer than before.

Hours passed in tense silence, punctuated only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional warning cry of a bird. Danny remained cautious, observing Swift's every move, testing his reactions, and scanning the surroundings with sharp, calculated eyes. Swift, for his part, allowed it, understanding that trust had to be earned, not demanded.

As the sun began to dip low, casting the forest in hues of orange and gold, they reached a small clearing. In the center, a single campfire smoldered, smoke curling lazily into the sky. And there, seated cross-legged with the same comically large sedge hat, was the old man they had been tracking. He looked up, his eyes gleaming with amusement, as if he had been expecting them all along.

"Well, well… Swift, Danny Chan," the man said, his voice carrying the same mix of mischief and wisdom that had unsettled Danny before. "You two make quite the pair. Strange world, stranger company."

Danny's hand immediately moved to his katana, positioning himself between Swift and the old man. "Who are you, and what do you want? How do we know we can trust you?"

The old man laughed, a low, rolling sound. "Ah, mistrust! My favorite. It keeps the blood pumping. But you, young Danny, you're sharp. Very sharp indeed. Swift," he said, turning his attention to the armored man, "you are a survivor. I've been watching you. And you… well, you have not entirely failed in gaining the respect of our cautious young friend here."

Swift raised an eyebrow. "Watching me? From where? And why am I not dead yet?"

Sedge hat chuckled, twirling a thin, wooden staff in his hand. "I have my ways. And why you're alive is simple: because your story is far from over. Bones has not found you yet, but he will. And when he does… well, that's why you two need to start trusting each other. You're stronger together than apart."

Danny's eyes narrowed. "You speak in riddles. If Bones is here, and you know about him, then you've been helping him… haven't you?"

The old man shook his head slowly, the brim of his hat casting a shadow over his face. "No, no. Bones is a creature of chaos. I do not serve him, nor do I serve any who would harm this world. But I do watch. And I intervene when necessary. For now, your task is simple: learn to trust, or die trying. Bones won't wait for hesitation."

Danny turned to Swift, the tension between them momentarily forgotten as the weight of the old man's words sank in. Swift met his gaze, and for the first time, Danny saw the raw determination beneath the armor, the quiet resilience of a man who had survived the impossible.

"Alright," Danny said finally, lowering his guard slightly. "We'll work together. But I'm keeping my eyes open. One false move, and…" He let the threat hang in the air, unfinished.

Swift nodded solemnly. "Understood. No false moves."

The old man clapped his hands once, and the sound echoed strangely in the forest. "Good. Now, let us see if you two can begin to coordinate before the real storm arrives. Bones does not wait, and neither should you."

As the sun set and shadows deepened, Swift and Danny prepared for what lay ahead. The forest around them seemed to pulse with unseen energy, and the faint, lingering echoes of Bones' malevolence reminded them both that time was a luxury they could not afford. Trust was fragile, yet it was their only weapon against the darkness to come.

And so, side by side, they readied themselves for the trials ahead, knowing that the path to survival—and perhaps victory—would demand more than skill alone. It would demand unity.

The green star pulsed faintly against Swift's chest, a reminder of all he had lost and all he still had to protect. Danny tightened his grip on his katana, the steel glinting in the dying light. The first step in their alliance had been taken, but the battle for Earth—and for the secrets hidden in the shadows—was only beginning
