Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – What Nneka Knew

Amechi's mind had barely rested.

The lab visit with Oge left him more confused than ever. The nurse's words repeated in his head like a chant he couldn't shake off: "The pregnancy appears to be around four weeks."

Four weeks. But she had said two. He didn't know what to believe.

That evening, while sitting alone in his room, a call came through.

Unknown Number.

He hesitated. Then answered.

"Hello?"

A female voice, soft but quick: "Amechi? It's me, Nneka. Please… I need to see you. It's important. It's about Oge."

He blinked. "Nneka? From school?"

"Yes. I wouldn't call if it wasn't serious. Can we meet? At Obi's Place, behind the old Community Center. 6:00 PM. Please."

Before he could ask questions, the call ended.

It reminded him of how nneka looked at them when he and oge were coming back from the hospital

The shock the sudden disappearance made him

believe it might be something important how about if it's was about the pregnancy. He decided to honor the invitation.

---

He arrived at the spot a few minutes early.

Obi's Place was almost empty, save for a few drinkers and a football game playing quietly on an old TV in the corner. He chose a seat near the back, where he could see the entrance clearly.

Then she walked in.

Nneka.

She hadn't changed much — still tall, graceful, confident. But her eyes held something else now. Something sharp, almost mischievous.

"Amechi," she smiled, sliding into the seat across from him.

"Nneka… why did you call me?"

She leaned forward, placing her hand gently over his. "I heard what happened. Oge. The pregnancy. The drama."

He shifted uncomfortably.

"And?"

"I just wanted you to know the truth," she said, eyes locked on his. "Oge isn't who she pretends to be. You're not the only one she was with. I saw things, Amechi. And I think… you deserve to know."

His heart thumped.

"What did you see?"

Instead of answering, she gently touched his arm. Her fingers lingered longer than necessary.

"Nneka—"

"You were always the sweet one back then," she said, smiling. "Quiet. Deep. I didn't even notice you properly until recently. And now… seeing you like this. You've grown into someone… strong."

He moved his hand away slowly.

"Nneka, why am I really here?"

She chuckled softly. "Relax, We'll get to it."

Then her tone changed — quieter, more intimate.

"She told people you begged her that night. But I overheard her bragging to someone else that she controlled you. That she could always come back and you'd still care."

Amechi's chest tightened.

"Are you serious?"

"She used you, Amechi. And if you let this pregnancy thing tie you down, you'll never get your life back."

He wanted to believe her. But something didn't feel right.

Her hand grazed his shoulder again. "You know… you're not hard to look at. I see you now. And if I wanted, I could give you something real…"

She leaned closer, lips inches from his ear.

"…something sweeter than lies."

That was when he pulled back sharply.

"Stop."

She looked surprised. "Why? You think I'm lying?"

"I don't know," he said. "But I didn't come here for this."

He stood up.

"I came because I thought you had real truth to share — not to flirt, not to play games. I've had enough of people using me."

She watched him with narrowed eyes. "You're still naïve, Amechi. You think everything has to come wrapped in honesty?"

He shook his head. "No. But I think if someone's going to claim they have truth… they shouldn't start by trying to distract me with touches."

He turned to leave.

"I'm not the same boy from school," he added.

Before he reached the door, she called out one last time.

"Oge was seeing someone else the same week she saw you," she said, loud enough for him to hear. "Ask her if she knows someone called Desmond. Then look at the dates again."

He paused — for just a moment — then left.

---

That night, back in his room, he sat on the bed and let the weight of the day crush him.

Could Nneka be telling the truth?

Was this Desmond real?

Or was she just trying to twist his emotions?

He brought out the pregnancy paper again.

> "Four weeks pregnant," he whispered.

"Then why did she say two?"

"Why is everything so complicated?"

His phone vibrated again.

A message from Oge.

> "Did you go out today?"

He stared at it.

Then deleted the chat history.

No reply.

Not tonight.
