Elio's chest heaved, his body shaking with exhaustion, fury, terror. "Yes!" he roared, sword trembling against Allen's. "I need to know!"
Allen leaned closer, his grin manic, eyes wild. His voice was a whisper only Elio could hear.
"Then survive long enough to earn the answer."
The words slithered into Elio's ear, colder than the blade still locked against his own. Sparks spat and hissed between them as their wings strained in the air. Sweat and blood ran down Elio's face, dripping into his mouth, salty and bitter. His arms shook, his lungs burned, but he forced himself to roar back.
"Then I'll survive, bastard!"
He shoved forward with everything he had. Their blades shrieked apart, Elio's shield flaring with holy light as he swung again.
Allen twisted away, smirking, wings leaving black trails through the sky. The clash shook the night, each strike like thunder above the burning plaza.
