His eyes darkened. "You think that's what this is?"
"I don't know," she admitted. "You're hard to read. And sometimes I think I'm getting close, but then you pull back and it's like...like you're waiting for me to prove something."
"I am hard to read," he said gently.
Allen leaned closer, until their foreheads nearly touched.
"I'm not avoiding you," he whispered. "I'm buying time. Because the thing I made for you? It's not done. And I want the moment to be right."
"…Made?" she asked, barely breathing.
He smiled. "You'll see."
The silence that followed was warmer. Softer. Still uncertain... but filled with something else now.
Something like hope.
