Red

Everything turned red in my sight.

Not just a flicker of temper, not just irritation. Red, everywhere. It was a haze, a storm, a rage that poured over me hotter than the soup Kayla had deliberately spilled. I couldn't see her face, not really — all I could see was Blake's. His wince, his gasp, the way his lips trembled as the steaming broth hit his skin. The way his whole body jerked away in pain.

"Blake—" I was on my feet before I even realized it, reaching, trying to help him wipe it off before it burned deeper. My hands trembled as I grabbed tissues from my nightstand, but he was already pushing at the fabric of his shirt, desperate to free himself from the sting. His breath hitched, wet and shaky, like he was holding back a sob.

Behind me, Kayla's voice cut in. Sweet. False. "Oh my God, I didn't mean—"

"Get out." My voice came out low, raw.
