'What did this guy just do? It feels like… he dampened the noise for me. Is he seriously protecting me from the sound?'

Her heart skipped a beat, half from suspicion, half from an unwilling sense of warmth that stirred despite herself. She shook her head violently, as if to throw away the thought.

'Bah! What am I thinking? This prodigal man isn't capable of being gentle. He must have some ulterior motive!'

Qin Cheng, meanwhile, did not notice her inner turmoil. His tall frame moved with steady confidence, his steps echoing heavily along the corridor. The torchlight painted his sharp jawline in alternating shades of gold and shadow, making him look like some grim monarch descending into hell with his prize clasped in his arms.

The metal door ahead creaked open fully, and an immense roar of voices surged inside like a living tide. It smelled of sweat, blood, cheap wine, and the metallic tang of fear. Yun Xi's sensitive nose crinkled at once.
