If a Balancer did not develop their skills and became too reliant on such items, then they would not improve much, and they would be far too vulnerable in situations where they would no longer have such items to bail them out of trouble.
It was like they would be surrounding themselves in a protective bubble a lot of the time, but once that bubble popped, they would be unable to protect themselves against the very threats that the bubble had been protecting them from.
That was all the more reason why Ash had chosen to put Skye on a path that was more suited to her, but did not give up fully on the Balancer skills and techniques.
