Her phone call had been made with the purpose of granting her the time she needed, but it was to cover for another thing.
It was so that the people she had targeted so far would not simply disappear in a way that they would not turn up at work, and their workplace would not get in contact with their family or other contacts as a result of that.
Their workplace would want to know why they were missing work, so they would have to follow up on that by calling them.
If that did not work, then they would have other contacts whom they would be able to get in touch with instead.
If their contacts were called and were told that they had not shown up to work, then people would think it strange that they had missed their day at work.
It would seem even stranger if they were not in their home and nobody had seen them for some time.
