Seeing them sitting there, not choosing to use that chance and continuing to obstruct the law by protecting the other guilty parties, there was no longer a need to hold back from sentencing using the full extent of the law.
There would no longer be anything that could protect the arsonist besides a future court appeal to try and prove their innocence once again, but there would need to be a way to prove that they had been framed.
If they could not do that, then they would remain in jail for their entire sentence.
Since two dead among the many dead or missing were counted as him definitely being behind taking lives, he would not get out of jail for a very long time.
It would be possible that they would only get out of jail once they were very old, or they would end up dying in prison without ever being able to see the outside world again.
There were holes in the case and things left unsolved, but with a case involving what seemed to be a dispute, it was bound to be very messy.
