Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Formal Expectations

Tuesday after school Kyo walked up to the fourth floor, entered the student council room, and sat at his normal spot. Next to Miura on the left couch. Everyone else was already there sitting where they usually sit as well.

"Welcome everyone, today I would like for us to talk about what we are going to do for the welcoming festival that is starting next Friday." Yuuki said with a smile on her face, excited for what the festival will bring.

She continued, "Kyo, starting tomorrow I want you to go around to each club and ask what they are doing for the welcoming festival. While you are at it, drop off the items that the clubs asked for. Mr. Nyuga went shopping, the items are in the faculty room as we speak." Kyo nodded his head as if to say "yes I can do that."

"Hey pres, what are we doing for the festival?" Ryuji asked.

Yuuki smiled, "great question, we are fill-ins for the other clubs, at least for this event. I want to make sure everything runs smoothly as we get back into the hang of things before we hold an activity of our own. If something goes wrong, then we are the ones who will help fix it."

Kyo thought about it for a moment then asked, "how are we doing this then? Like, um" Kyo paused trying to find the right words. "Will we be splitting the school into sections, for example I would help out in the basement, Nora would help out on the second floor, and so forth. Or would we just walk around the festival waiting for people to ask us for help?" Kyo's question wasn't very well thought out, but he did bring up something to consider, that being how and in which ways were the student council going to help.

All eyes went to Yuuki for the answer, but truth be told, she hadn't thought of this before. Usually the school does the welcoming festival by class, so each class decides on what to do for the event. However, this year, they changed it to be more club focused as to get more students engaged with the event. Bringing up a whole new set of issues. "I don't know. So let's vote on it." Yuuki pulled out a notebook and pen and started to scribble down the main pros and cons of each idea.

Splitting the school into sections meant easy coverage. Kyo would help the outside and sports areas, Miura could help with the third floor activities, Shino would help with the basement, Ryuji would be in charge of the second floor, and Yuuki (writing her own name down as if she was a different person) could take the first floor.

Yuuki then moved to the cons section on the paper. The main downside is what happens if a club needs help that the person covering that section doesn't know how to assist. For example, the theater club is located on the first floor, given the example earlier, Yuuki isn't great at theater, if they needed help, she probably couldn't do much. Even if we picked the best people per section. There would still be blind spots.

Yuuki then moved to the second option proposed by Kyo. Having each member walk around the school both during preparation and the actual festival would be nice. However, that leads to a blind spot for everyone on school grounds, and it would be hard to coordinate where each person is at which times. If they all were inside during the festival, then if the sports clubs needed help, they couldn't rely on the student council.

Yuuki then flipped the page over and wrote down another idea. All members of the student council could stay in this office, then if someone needed help, they could just go to this office and grab a member. This was unfair to the other students though, the student council room was located on the fourth floor, to have someone from the basement or even outside have to travel all the way up here would be a tall order if everyone is already super busy.

Yuuki then drew an X over the idea and flipped back to the other page. "Everyone, which way would you prefer to help out the rest of the school?" Yuuki said, re-reading Kyo's example with her own pros and cons of each one.

The majority of people voted on the second option, including Kyo. The council agreed to have each member walk around the school both during preparation and the festival and helping out whoever needs assistance. There was an agreement that if someone was asked to help out in a club they are not great with such as Yuuki and theater, they would call another member who is more fitted to the role. This meant that each member needed the other's phone numbers, excluding Mr. Nyuga.

"How will each club know that we are there to help them? Some people still don't even know I am a member of the council yet." Kyo said, asking another valid question.

"Simple, just wear your pin." Ryuji said.

"I will inform the school that the student council is there to help during the festival." She looked at Kyo when saying this as if to ease his anxiety. She then turned to everyone and said, "All members will be required to wear their pins starting next week." All members nodded and agreed to the plans regarding the festival. "With that, this meeting is adjourned." Vice President Shino said. Most people walked out, except for Yuuki, Kyo, and Mr. Nyuga. "Arianagi, allow me to explain the full role of treasurer now that you are an official member."

Kyo thought to himself now? Why didn't you tell me yesterday? Have I been doing it wrong?

Mr. Nyuga began to explain despite Kyo's questioning deep in thought expression. "Your role as treasurer goes as follows: Meet with every club at the beginning of each month to get a list of items they need." Yuuki interrupted him, "We gave you a week this time to do that, but in the future it should only take you two days to meet with everyone." Mr. Nyuga nodded before continuing.

"After you meet with them, you and I will talk, and I will go shopping for the items. I will then drop them off in the faculty office for you to pick them up and distribute the materials. You have to deliver those items before that club has its next meeting, so try and do it in the mornings. In the event that a club room is locked, that's what your key is primarily used for. You're also in charge of locking up the school if you're the last to leave the building, hopefully that doesn't happen though. You have to tally up how much money we make during events, and keep track of how much money we have left after each purchase. Your job requires planning, budgeting, financial reports, records, and assisting clubs with their needs and desires. Essentially you're the life line of each club."

Specifically, all the money Kyo would be in charge of is only from club sales, and not from the school itself. Despite the role, the law knows that he is still just a fifteen year old student, and does not expect him to handle or spend large sums of money.

Kyo thought to himself, this is a lot of information to take in, I was told some of that information previously, but he was very serious in his words. I could only imagine the repercussions if money somehow went missing, or if the school wasn't locked on my account. I wouldn't just be expelled, but also be charged with a number of crimes, not that I ever planned on stealing or anything, and I don't think they thought I would do that either, but IF I did or IF those things happened, that is what he was really warning me about. Kyo then gulped down out of nervousness, and said in a sheepish voice "I understand."

"Do not worry too much though, I have to finalize everything, meaning if something is amiss, I will know about it. Any questions so far?" Mr. Nyuga finished. Kyo breathed a small sigh of relief. Then asked, "how do clubs earn money?"

Yuuki chimed in, "well you see that is also partly your task, our school holds a lot of events, more than most, and everyone who isn't a student here has to pay a fee to get in. $15 dollars for adults, $10 for teens, and $7 for children. That may sound like a lot for a school festival, but after their fee everything else is on us. They get meals, drinks, lessons, samples, and more. Honestly they get a lot more than what they paid for. At the end of it, all that money goes to you. You have to count it and that is how we pay for clubs to get new stuff. That money is also how we pay for clubs to do future plans leading into the next event(s), it's not all that complicated once you get used to it."

Kyo thought about it more for a second. We can't just give each club a certain amount of money every event since different clubs need different amounts, some a lot and others little. I also thought it would be easier to give the advisors of each club x amount of money, but if there was an issue or it went missing that would be harder to explain than if it all just fell onto one person (me). Kyo then took a beep breath as if he were saying this though all in one go. "I think I get most of it now."

Mr. Nyuga went back to his desk, Yuuki was happy to see Kyo finally getting the hang of things, and Kyo was nervous but excited. "Great, the rest will come with time." Yuuki said to Kyo as a form of affirmation.

Kyo gave a bow to Mr. Nyuga and Yuuki before leaving.

...

Wednesday, after school, Kyo went around to each club and got a list of what they will be doing.

Figuring he should start from the bottom floor working his way to the top while he still had energy to go down and up the stairs. Kyo gathered up the candles, fabric, and strange items the witchcraft club asked for and started the long journey.

Working his way down to the basement, Kyo stopped in front of the napping club's door and knocked, of course no one answered. After a few seconds Kyo just walked in and looked around the room for Neru but she wasn't there. To his surprise there was only one person in the room, and he was putting something up on the shelf at the far right of the room with earbuds in. Kyo thought that this was probably the same person who was under the blankets last time.

Kyo walked over and tapped on his shoulder lightly. He slowly turned towards Kyo with eye bags under his eyes, was younger looking, skinny, and had a head of hair that was long and dark covering parts of his face. When the young man with this description looked at Kyo, he saw candles in Kyo's hands, his eyes opened up a bit, they were bright blue for a moment, but then his hair came back down covering them.

After they were both done looking at each other in silence, he reached and grabbed the candles from Kyo's hands, there were three in total. He nodded at Kyo, then fell to the floor. "Are you ok?" Kyo said worried, the floor was still covered in blankets, so he was fine. Kyo then heard light snoring and thought how is he already asleep? The candles aren't even lit. He then breathed a sigh of and headed out of the room.

Heading over to the knitting club next door, Kyo saw Neru wearing the female school uniform and not the pajamas she had on last time. "Heyyy there Kyo, what's up?" She said much more awake and vibrant than last time. This is her awake form, Kyo thought."I was just dropping off the candles you asked for, the guy in there took them and quickly fell asleep."

"Oh, you met Zuko, I wanted to be there for that." She said pouting

"Well we didn't really meet, I didn't even get his name and I don't think he knows mine." Kyo said this in a comforting tone.

"Haha, well next time then. Where are you off to now?"

"Knitting club, you?"

"I'm going to pass out. I have been awake for far too long."

"I won't keep you then, have a goodnight." Kyo then remembered that he had to ask another question.

"Yup, gooood night,"

"Wait, I'm sorry, one last thing. What will your club be doing for the welcoming festival?"

Neru paused, it was awkward for both of them since the conversation had technically reached its conclusion. They had already said goodnight to one another, and now there was more. Like leaving a P.S note on a finished letter. She shook off the awkwardness and said, "the napping club is going to provide a rest area for children and adults."

"I see, thank you, sorry to have forgotten." They laughed it off. Neru took her leave. As she walked past Kyo into her club room, Kyo bowed. When he heard the door close behind him, Kyo then walked over and entered the knitting club room, and walked to the desk in the back. "Here are the materials you asked for," Kyo said, handing them over to Amimono. "Thank you! You really didn't have to though." She stood up from the desk and walked over to put the items away, then opened the door waving to me to follow.

As Kyo walked over to her, she tossed a scarf around his neck, "It's done! Well actually it's been done for a few days now but I had no way of informing you." Amimono said laughing. The scarf around Kyo's neck was an ocean blue color, made from silk, it was also a perfect fit.

Kyo took a second to really feel the scarf around him. The texture, its thickness (or rather, how thin it was), if it made him too warm or not. After a moment of analysis, Kyo looked at Amimono and said, "It's so soft and warm, this is amazing, thank you so much!!" Kyo gave his genuine response and with a deeper bow than usual. "Really, I'm glad you like it! I kind of rushed to get it done quickly. If there is anything you want changed on it let me know." Amimono said this as if her rushing the project diminished its quality, but that was not the case.

"No, this is amazing, once winter rolls around I will be using this a lot."

"Yay! I will be watching out for that."

"Amimono, one more thing, what will your club be doing for the Welcoming Festival?"

"The knitting club will be offering the guests lessons on knitting, and they can create something of their own. We will also have some items for sale and samples that they can check out." Kyo took out his phone and wrote this as well as the napping club's activity down. "That sounds really cool, I will have to stop by." Amimono smiled, "well is that everything then?"

"Yes, thank you again." Kyo said bowing, "you're welcome, if you need any other stuff like a blanket or something let me know." Amimono said, heading back to her desk. Kyo turned and headed out of the door, he took a deep breath before walking into the witchcraft club.

None of the lights were on and it was hard to see. "Umm, Kuroshi are you in here?" A moment passed with still no movement, "oh, I mean." Kyo coughed as though to clear his throat, then said, "Goddess of the dark, are you in here?" Kyo then felt a breath falling down his neck before a quiet whisper next to his ear spoke, "I am everywhere yet nowhere, I can't be seen nor felt, but I am on you. What am I?" Kyo quickly turned his head to see who it was, but no one was there. After a few seconds the voice spoke loudly above him, "Answer me minion!" Kyo took a second to think her riddle over, "God," was his answer.

"Wrong! There is no God. There is nothing." She said getting closer and closer to Kyo, "the answer is the end." She appeared right in front of Kyo and gave this answer. The lights then turned on. Standing in front of Kyo was the black and white gothic Lolita dressed, contact lens wearing, third year, Kuroshi. This time however, both of her eyes were black did she lose her contact lens, Kyo wondered. Kyo also thought to himself, how did she turn the lights on if she was in front of him.

Looking around he realized that it was not only herself and him in the room. In fact all around the room were people dressed in black and white cloaks with pointed hoods covering their faces looking down from above. Kyo was a little freaked out, the fact that he didn't move from when she first started talking was proof of that.

"HAHAHA!! You tried your best to answer even in the face of death, I commend you Child of the darkened rooms." Kuroshi used this as Kyo's permanent title whenever he was in their club room. "What is it you bring as an offering?" Kuroshi said with a grimacing smile.

Kyo handed her the materials she asked for, "yes my goddess of the dark, I bring you the teeth of the sea (sea salt), some Mystic Sages Genesis (baking powder), and a wound healing health position ( rubbing alcohol)." Kyo said this in character, but the knots in his stomach from last time had come back. "Great work my servant! Now leave for your own safety. Your mind isn't ready to witness our next creation."

Kyo gave a dramatic bow then said, "One day I would like to witness my goddesses' great work first hand, but I agree that as I am right now, I am far too weak. However, I have one more inquiry, a question that only you, my liege, can answer. What art thou doing for the Welcoming Festival?"

Kuroshi laughed, almost as if the character image she was making had broken just a bit. Kyo's old-timey ways of talking were too funny for her. "We have teamed up with the science club to do science experiments." Kuroshi said plainly, she couldn't figure out how to tell this information when her facade was already slightly cracked. This made Kyo pause, he took out his phone, wrote down the info. Then gave a small bow before leaving.

While in the basement hall Kyo could physically hear the sound of the bit being unpaused as the witchcraft club went back to their strange ways. "HAHAHA! Now my minions, let us summon greatness." Passionate chanting by the others in the club followed suit.

Kyo went back up to the fourth floor and grabbed the art and theater materials before heading back down to the first floor. Kyo went to the art club first, it was as busy and chaotic as ever. This time they had made something really cool, as he walked into the room the ground had a red line of paint that reminded him of a tongue drawn on it. After looking at this strange piece, Kyo turned around, and right next to the door, he saw a face with bleeding rolled back eyes made of paper mache.

Taking a second look at the floor, he realized that it was a painted mouth matching the creepiness of the face. "Wow," is all he could manage to say. "Right, it looks pretty good, don't cha think?" Emi Bijutsu (president of the art club) said as if appearing behind Kyo. "This is for the haunted house, it's not done yet, but it's coming along nicely." Kyo nodded in agreement, he thought to himself, this school seems to go all out during events.

"Oh, here are the materials you asked for." As Kyo tried to hand them over she had a smug look on her face. "Well student council member, I would like your opinion on some of our club's structures so please follow me." Kyo walked with her and saw all kinds of amazing things. They were working on a dragon's head to not make the painted floor go to waste. People were building a paper mache well also for the haunted house. Others were testing out different face paints. They made it all the way to the back of the club room where Kyo could set down the stuff. "So, what did you think of the tour?"

"You weren't the best guide I've had, but the stuff here is all really well made."

"Haha, well at least you're honest. Thank you for carrying the stuff over, you're free to go."

"I knew it. You were just using me to take the stuff over here."

"Well … kind of yeah. There is way too much stuff to carry, but to make it up to you, you can leave the theater supplies here." Kyo was shocked by her offer, "umm, ok, are you sure."

"Yeah, as it is we are working with the theater club and they come by often, so it saves you a trip."

"What is the theater club doing?" Kyo asked as he was about to head there next.

"They are putting on a play called Jekyll and Hyde, we are just helping out with set design and some make-up stuff, we won't be in the play itself."

"I see, well thank you," Kyo said, giving a small bow. He then took his phone out and added art club - a haunted house. Theater club - Jekyll and Hyde play. Into his notes. As Emi waved him off, Kyo disappeared behind the art pieces. On his way out he saw Kimori, who was hard at work helping with the well, he didn't say anything, and just went back up to the fourth floor to get the next set of items.

Kyo reached down and grabbed the sports equipment. Such as the air pump and arrows. Kyo then walked down the stairs, went outside, and headed over to the archery club. They were practicing in the back of the building like usual. Kyo, heading to the back, saw Yumi Yajirushi sitting close to the door, "Excuse me, Ms. Yajirushi, can I borrow you for a second?" She turned and saw Kyo behind her, she looked up and nodded, then they went to the foyer in the front of the building. As he handed her the arrows she gave a bow.

"Thank you Kyo."

He was not expecting her to call him by his nickname. It was a little weird. "Yeah no problem, till next time." She nodded, heading back to the practice room. "Wait, one more thing. What will the archery club be doing for the Welcoming Festival?"

"Teaching and babysitting. Each of the sports clubs will be teaching the kids how to play a sport of their choosing. They can't change their minds though, since the parents have to know where to pick them up from." Yumi Yajirushi said with a small laugh. She then continued, "some of the members will be helping with the stage crew for the play, but most of us will be here."

Kyo gave a small bow, "thank you for letting me know." With that the two parted ways. Kyo went over to the basketball gym next, and gave Goda the air pump, and got a second confirmation that each of the sports clubs will be teaching and babysitting.

...

Kyo then went back up to the fourth floor and grabbed the mixing bowl then left the council room. Both of the clubs Kyo was going to were located on the second floor. Originally, Kyo wanted to go to the gaming club but figured they would take up most of his time. Meaning first up was the home ec club, the president of this club was Yori Kōya. The only thing extraordinary about her was her love for food.

This club was simple, all they ask for is ingredients and some new equipment that breaks every so often. Kyo handed the mixing bowl over to one of the club members and asked what they will be doing for the festival. Turns out they will be selling food on the school grounds in two separate stalls. One for sweets and another for savory items. Next to the knitting club this was runner-up for most normal.

Going back up to the fourth floor, Kyo saw Ryuji heading the same way. "Hey there Ryuji, what are you up to?" He looked at Kyo a little irked.

"My girlfriend is asking if we got her regular items. My sister forgot to, so I am trying to find a solution, damn it all." Kyo had two thoughts in his head at that moment. One, this guy who is somehow a third year in high school, has a girlfriend? The second was why is his sister the one who is getting the items? Then it dawned on Kyo, or rather he was reminded, that Miura and Ryuji have the same last name, "Wait, are you and Miura siblings?" Kyo was confused, they looked nothing alike so it was hard to know for sure.

"Huh? Are you stupid Kyo? Nora isn't exactly a common name you know." Ryuji said even more irked than before, like Kyo had just added fuel to the fire. "Well you and Miura don't look alike so I just assumed it was a coincidence." He sighed, "yeah we get that a lot, but yes we are brother and sister." Kyo still couldn't piece it together, but at least that answered that question.

Kyo then paused, he thought he had visited every club, but if something was missing, then that was on him."Ryuji, just to clarify, who is your girlfriend?"

Ryuji looked confused as well. "Yōsei, you met her already, the president of the gardening club up on the school's roof." Kyo had checked all over the school seeing the different clubs, but never checked the roof. Kyo nervously owned up to his mistake, pausing on the steps leading to the fourth floor, "Ryuji please forgive me, I didn't know there was a club on the roof."

Ryuji then realized it too, why Nyuga didn't get the items. He looked down at the apologetic Kyoyota Arianagi and asked,"Yuuki gave you a list of clubs to visit, right Kyo?" he nodded. They then went up to the student council room and found the list. Sure enough there was no gardening club listed on it.

"Freak! I will give her a mouthful later, for now I will try and find a temporary solution." He patted me on the shoulder as he left the room, "this isn't your fault, next time you do checks for the clubs though, please remember to check with her, thank you." Then Ryuji continued, as for what the gardening club will be doing for the festival, "put down 'gardening club - giving a presentation on symbiotic relationship and selling a plant booklet.'" Kyo nodded as he pulled out his phone to write that down. Ryuji then ran off. "Best of luck Ryuji!" Kyo said. He then grabbed the new game for the gaming club and went on his way.

Kyo knocked on the door to the gaming club, as usual the same man as last time opened the door in a quick fashion, "ready my man! I won't lose this time! Rock! Paper! Scissors! Shoot!" Kyo was more ready than last time and threw out a paper, the other guy threw up rock. "Just you watch! No one beats Gentetsu three times in a row."

Kyo then entered the room and was greeted with a smile from Asobu Shosha (the president of the gaming club). "Hey there, what did you bring me?" Kyo handed him the board game titled "Once Upon a Time." A game where the players create a story together, using cards that show typical elements from fairy tales. One player is the "storyteller" and creates a story using the ingredients on their cards. They try to guide the plot towards their own ending. The other players try to use cards to interrupt the storyteller and become the new storyteller. The winner is the first player to play out all their cards and have it all make somewhat-kinda-sorta-sence."Hopefully you don't already own this game," Kyo said, handing the box over.

"We don't own it, but most of us have played it before, so we'll add it to the collection and play it some other time. Thank you." Asobu Shosha.

There was a moment of silence, Kyo was honestly expecting that he would pull me into another game and this would take longer. "Arianagi, can we get your opinion on something?" Asobu Shosha asked "yeah what is it?"

"We are doing human chess for the Welcoming Festival. Two of our members will be the leaders, and audience members will be the pawns. We want everyone from our club and other clubs who want to, to be the speciality pieces. However, we are short on a knight. Would you be willing to take up that position?

Kyo had never played chess before, meaning he would have to study up on how the pieces move, and the format of the board. It was a tall order since the event was only a week and some change away. "Yeah I can do that" Kyo said with little doubt in his capabilities. After all, their job is to help out those in need.

"Really" Asobu Shosha's eyes lit up, "thank you so much!" The two gave a small bow to one another, then Kyo left the room, writing down, "board game club - human chess."

Kyo headed back up to the student council for the last time today. Walking into the room he saw Ryuji yelling at Yuuki, with Shino sitting on the couch. "Seriously, how did you forget to tell him about the gardening club?" Ryuji was visibly frustrated and sounded mad. "I understand, and it was an honest mistake, I will tell Yōsei I'm sorry personally, but it's honestly not the end of the world Ryuji." Shino looked at Yuuki, "he's only mad since it's his girlfriend, not that Yōsei would really care herself."

"Oh yeah? What would you know Shino?" Ryuji retorted.

"Don't forget I am smarter than you are little boy."

"I'm older than you!!" Ryuji was sensitive towards his looks after all. His bickering continued for a few minutes before Miura walked in. She walked to the back where they were arguing, grabbed Ryuji by the collar of the uniform, and dragged him out of the room, "Hey! Wait Miura, I am not done!" As much as he tried to fight it she won. Shino walked past Kyo and closed the door, then turned back and sat down again. The two people with the highest positions both signed heavily.

"How did taking the items go?" Yuuki asked, looking at Kyo. "Good, for the most part."

"Yuuki tell me we are done for the day." Shino said more exhausted and tired than the rest of us. "For now, yes, next week will be even busier so get a good amount of rest over the weekend." Shino rested her head on the couch and stretched her legs. Yuuki, ignoring her own advice, kept working on some paperwork, "everything ok Kyo?" Shino asked. Kyo was just standing there. Even he wasn't sure why he hadn't moved to sit down or talk more about his day, maybe his mind just needed a break after so much running around and talking to different clubs.

"Yeah … everything's fine, I just realized this is the real student council isn't it?"

"Haha, yes, your honeymoon phase has ended, it only gets harder and more chaotic from here, hopefully you don't mind us showing our true colors."

"Honestly I'm happy, I was worried you would always be formal with me."

"We were only formal, because it was first appearances, and we weren't entirely sure if you would become an official member or not. Now that you are a full member, that formality has changed to friendship. However, I do have a reputation to keep up, so outside of this room, I am the 'Ice Princess.'" Shino looked kind of happy that she had such a reputation, it commanded respect, however, she did not want that to follow her into this room, or with her friends.

"Right, I am going to get some rest. Bye bye" Shino waved us off. It was getting late, as the time had now passed 4:50pm.

"Have fun Shino." Yuuki said, still looking down at the papers before her. Kyo copied his notes for what each club was going to do onto a sheet of paper, then handed it to Yuuki."I am off too, good work today, Yuuki." Yuuki looked up, smiled at Kyo, and said, "yup, good work, see you tomorrow."

Kyo then left the room, after getting home, he felt the exhaustion hit like a wave of force. A full day of endlessly running around and learning new things, and it was only Tuesday. Kyo rejuvenated some energy by watching videos on his phone, before taking a nap. He hated naps, but there was no fighting it this time. He woke up about forty minutes later to the sound of buzz going off. It was a message from Yuuki. "Good work today!" With a smile emoji. Kyo got up, grabbed some dinner, studied, and was ready for what was next to come.
