After that, in order to complete their respective Quests, Fang Li and Sylvia gradually spent less and less time together.
To continue collecting information for the original Magic Path Books, Fang Li devoted himself to intelligence gathering by every possible means. Without anyone noticing, he carried out numerous secret operations one after another.
Sometimes Fang Li succeeded.
And sometimes, he failed.
It was never a simple Quest to begin with.
The originals of the Magic Path Books, because of their inherent danger and uniqueness, were generally sealed away inside the headquarters of major magic organizations. They would never be shown to the world lightly. Only under special circumstances, such as when the Roman Catholic Church previously needed to use one for missionary purposes, would they take it out from their base and display it.
It was precisely such intelligence that Fang Li was trying to collect.
After all, even Fang Li could not possibly just break into the headquarters of those powerful magic organizations one by one.
If it were only the smaller magic groups, then with Fang Li's current abilities, barging in directly would not be impossible.
But the originals of the Magic Path Books were essentially all kept by organizations influential enough to affect national policies.
Take the Roman Catholic Church, for example, which claimed more than two billion followers worldwide. Even if only one in ten thousand was a magician, that would still be a full two hundred thousand magicians.
Against such overwhelming power, even Fang Li could not possibly break through head-on.
Not to mention, among those magicians were individuals extremely powerful, some no weaker than Fang Li himself, and some far stronger.
Thus, infiltrating the headquarters of these organizations was nothing short of suicide.
Therefore, all Fang Li could do was aim for rare opportunities, taking advantage of special situations to snatch away the Magic Path Book originals.
Naturally, such opportunities were few and far between.
But the world was vast, and chances were bound to appear.
Because of that, Fang Li carried out many operations. Relying on the overwhelming ability of his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, he had never once failed in an actual raid.
After all, no matter what kind of magic it was, before Fang Li's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, it could only be "killed."
Even so, there were several times when he was delayed or stalled by the enemy, giving them enough time to transfer the target away, leading to a few failed attempts.
It went without saying, this Quest was an extremely difficult one.
On the other hand, Fang Li's infamous reputation had spread completely across the world.
Compared to Fang Li's hardships, Sylvia's progress was smooth and steady.
Developing in an orderly fashion, Sylvia soon became one of the most famous idols in Academy City, and quickly expanded worldwide, embarking on global tours.
Fang Li often spoke with Sylvia on the phone and knew that her activities were progressing very well.
With the identity of an idol as her perfect cover, Sylvia rarely encountered combat. Each time, she successfully gathered the power of ley lines and Dragon Veins. There were some minor setbacks, but nothing nearly as dangerous as what Fang Li faced.
Of course, such smooth progress also meant that her pace was not particularly fast, as she had to coordinate with her concert schedules.
But at least her side of things was progressing steadily, with no need for Fang Li to worry.
And so, time flew by.
In the blink of an eye, an entire year had passed.
This became the second world in which Fang Li had stayed for over a year, after the world of Aria the Scarlet Ammo.
Morning. The sunlight was dazzling.
It was summer, the season when the sun shone with its fiercest intensity.
In Academy City, the streets were filled with sweltering heat, baking every corner and leaving far fewer pedestrians outside than usual.
Perhaps this was also because summer vacation had arrived?
For the students, who made up more than 80% of Academy City's population, the first semester of the new school year had already ended.
Today was the first day of summer vacation.
Under circumstances like this, and in this kind of weather, surely no Student Council member would willingly walk under the blazing sun. They would much rather stay holed up in the dorms with the air conditioner blasting, right?
Originally, Fang Li should have been one of those people too.
But at this moment, Fang Li was walking down the main path of a certain school.
This was a school rare to find in a technologically advanced Academy City, one that actually still had a dirt sports field.
The school grounds weren't very big. Just two school buildings stood front to back, connected by a corridor between them. If you looked down from above, the layout would resemble the Chinese character for (gong).
On the left side of the school buildings was an arched gymnasium.
On the right side was a swimming pool.
In Academy City, where technology was cutting-edge and schools were equipped with the most advanced facilities, this school could almost be called the bottom tier.
Not because it was bad, but because it was just far too ordinary.
As if striving to take "ordinary" to its very peak, even the school uniforms were bland: white shirts paired with black slacks for boys, and pleated skirts instead of trousers for girls. Simple, featureless, utterly unremarkable.
"Well, I guess that in itself could be considered this school's unique trait."
Fang Li muttered this as he walked under the scorching sun, carrying a business-style schoolbag slung over his shoulder.
"After all, this school has the ridiculous name of 'Certain High School.' Most of the students here are Level 0s with no abilities. Even those with powers don't go above Level 3. Naturally, it's the lowest of the low among all schools."
Whether fortunately or unfortunately, Fang Li himself was one of those Level 0s.
And so, this had been the school he'd attended for the past year.
Logically speaking, Fang Li should have already moved up to second grade.
Yet, after entering the school building, he ignored the second-year floor entirely and headed straight into a first-year classroom, opening the door.
The classroom that came into view was just like the rest of the school, ordinary, bland, and without any defining features.
And logically speaking, on the very first day of summer vacation, there shouldn't have been a single student here.
Unfortunately, by the time Fang Li stepped inside, there were already a few people present.
Not many.
But among this small number, three students instantly sprang from their seats and lunged straight at Fang Li.
"""Go die!!!"""
Three voices, brimming with resentment and fury, roared throughout the classroom.
Fang Li, however, acted as though he hadn't heard a thing. He yawned lazily and strolled inside.
Bang!
The first dull thud.
That was the sound of Fang Li, still yawning, driving his free hand into the stomach of the attacker rushing him from the left.
Bang!
The second dull thud.
That was the sound of Fang Li casually sidestepping, letting the attacker from the right slam headfirst into the doorway.
Bang!
The third dull thud.
That was the sound of Fang Li swinging up his schoolbag, smashing it directly into the face of the attacker who came straight at him.
By the time Fang Li walked lazily into the room, one assailant was lying on the ground, another had crashed into the wall, and the last was dangling off a desk.
Only then did Fang Li greet them.
"Good morning."
"""It's NOT a good morning!!!"""
The furious shouts rang out once more.
