CHAPTER START---

"You're already hurt," Oberon says, gesturing to the injured couple.

The woman leans on her staff, her right leg and left arm hanging limply, mangled and shattered at her sides.

The man's blood falls freely into the dirt from his cuts, bruises, and shredded palms, but he grits his teeth and points his sword at Oberon.

"Is this tablet really worth it?" He asks them. "No job is worth your life."

"True," she says. "But it's more than worth yours. This is just how things work in our group."

She leans over and catches herself on her husband, sneakily tapping his back twice, a signal for how much time she needed.

Oberon frowns, and a moment later the man rushes him, striking out with his blade.

The woman stumbles back and falls to the ground, seemingly a non-threat as they clash. The man's blade is no longer glowing purple, signalling to Oberon that his regular Barrier could block it, which it does as his fist knocks back the blade.

The man uses his free hand to create a small purple barrier, blocking Oberon's second punch as he thrusts forward.

Oberon uses Gravity to pull the man's blade to the side before shifting Gravity to pull the man's head down into a rising knee.

He shifts gravity again, causing the man to become weightless as he transitions the rising knee into a backflip while kicking the man into the air.

The man's teeth shatter as he grips the blade and tries to right himself in the air, but Oberon orients himself quicker and pulls the man in while they're both airborne.

The man barely adjusts himself in time to thrust his blade at Oberon while being pulled in, but the boy raises his hand and releases a blinding golden light from his palm, causing the man to reflexively shut his eyes.

The next thing he feels is a tiny fist slamming into the side of his face, rattling his brain as he's sent tumbling through the ground.

Oberon pursues the man, firing a Lightshot at him, but the swordsman blinks the blindness away in time to intercept it with his blade. Only for the Lightshot to push him back instead of shattering against his blade.

'Concussive?' The man wonders, then realizes his mistake. 'I shouldn't be surprised the boy is this skilled. He's been a monster this entire fight…'

Oberon wastes no time closing the distance and meeting every sword strike with a punch or kick, quickly adjusting to the man's speed and slowly overtaking him.

With each clash, the man feels his bones quake, his stomach turns as all the liquid in his body sloshes about.

Eventually, the man sees what he believes is a opening as the boy aims to punch him in the face, so he narrowly avoids the strike to kick Oberon in the shin, expecting the boy to leap away so he can thrust forward with his blade.

But much to his horror, Oberon floats a few inches into the air before descending with immense weight onto the man's left foot, shattering every bone within to dust before launching a strike at the man's knee.

The joint shatters and twists, causing bones to protrude from the skin behind this knee before Oberon reaches up and grabs the man by the shoulder. He makes them both weightless and spins, throwing the man into the far wall before rushing toward him.

The man's head is spinning, vision blurry, but he's already learned enough of Oberon's pattern to leap away after crumbling to the ground.

Oberon lands and crashes into the location the man leapt away from, then turns to him and charges in.

Even on one leg, the man continues fighting, or does his best attempt to. He flows Magic Energy into his blade, causing it to glow purple.

Had Oberon been able to sense Magic Energy, he'd have known why the man used this so sparingly. During the entire fight, he'd been pouring energy into this weapon, knowing it was his only chance at truly killing the child.

But even as the man slashes vertically at Oberon, the boy smiles. And the man feels his hope get snuffed out.

Oberon focuses on his own Magic Energy, trying to replicate the sensation of flowing Cosmic into his Barrier as he did earlier.

And with his life on the line, his Cosmic surges into the Barrier as fist meets blade, and Oberon shatters the man's sword before his fist connects to the man's face.

The man's consciousness fades as he's launched into the air, and Oberon deactivates Cosmic to conserve energy before reaching out with his hand and swiping to the side.

He alters gravity to send the man rolling across the floor into a pile of debris, finally allowing himself to catch a breath.

Oberon takes a moment to gather his thoughts, but before he can even finish that, two minutes have passed since this round began, and a Magic Circle appears below him.

He clasps his hands together as the 30ft -10m- wide Magic Circle erupts into a pillar of rapid, scorching sand.

Oberon watches from within his Gravity Barrier as the scorching sand is more intense than ever, grains moving and slamming into each other as they shift to swirl clockwise around his barrier, effectively putting him into a blender.

He then feels the Magic Energy required to defend himself increase as the sand starts glowing, not from an application of Magic, but from the friction of all the heated grains contacting each other at high speeds.

Oberon looks up to see that the sand has completely covered his Gravity Barrier, and down to see the ground below get shredded away into a sandpit that attacks from under him.

'This Magic is a problem. She's attacking constantly from all angles to wear me down, and it didn't help that I came straight from the ship to here, so I didn't even start at full power.'

He looks at the swirling sand as his Barrier slowly shrinks, giving him minutes before it completely collapses.

'This kind of spell wants you to move, that's when it unleashes its full power. I have to compensate…'

Oberon opens his hands before rushing forward, shrinking his Gravity Barrier to act as a second skin, holding his breath as the sand rushes in to grind him into dust.

Oberon pushes through the meters of sand, and much to his horror, the spell is powerful enough that it's worse than swimming through concrete. As if he's trudging his way through swirling lava on one breath, and with each inch of progress, he feels the pressure and intensity build.

Moments later, as Oberon gets closer to the edge, he feels the pressure almost double as the woman senses his imminent escape, and the sand adjusts to rise in intensity around him.

Oberon feels his Gravity Barrier get punctured for the first time as molten sand eats away at the left side of his face.

Within the few seconds it took for him to get out of the sand, the entire left side of his body was left without skin. Exposing the muscles, and in some places even the bones, all while his blood is barely being contained by Magic.

This is the horrifying visage that the couple sees glaring daggers at them while forcing its way out of the sand.

He steps out and collapses to his one good knee, feeling the air like hot metal being poured onto his exposed nerves as the sand rages behind him. Oberon winces, the pain so intense his mind can not even vocalize a scream, then his focus returns when he hears talking ahead of him.

"That's impossible," the woman says, and Oberon looks up to see her sitting on the floor, drenched in blood and sweat, as her husband sits beside her. "You should be dead. What the hell are you?"

"Tired," Oberon says as he raises a hand and points at her.

Their eyes widen as he fires a Lightshot directly at her face, aiming for the first real kill-shot of the fight.

The man pushes her aside, saving her from the attack, and the woman takes the opportunity to begin casting another spell.

A Magic Circle appears in her hand, using the last of her Magic Energy, and Oberon fires another shot at her head.

As she's laying on the ground her husband is too injured to move her, so he adjusts his position to block her, leaving his back to face Oberon as while he pours everything into his purple Barrier.

He instantly feels Oberon's Lightshot shatter against his back as his wife is almost done casting her last gambit, but as he's looking down at her focused gaze, her eyes become fearful, then regretful.

The man is confused for a moment, until he feels two small feet land on his back, one on his back and the other on his shoulder, and a glowing golden light leaves his shadow, blotting out his wife as she looks up at him.

A moment later, a powerful Lightshot pierces his back, exits his chest, and shoots through the woman's face.

It leaves a perfect hole in her skull before the blood, flesh, and brain matter fall into it to fill the hole, and the man barely whimpers before looking at his own injury.

He sees a matching hole where his heart should be, then feels Oberon's feet step off his back before he falls to the side, staring at the corpse of his love as the life fades from his eyes.

Lying beside both corpses, Oberon is covered with blood and sweat, only conscious because of the pain wracking his body as he desperately tries to catch his breath.

Speaking regretfully between each ragged breath.

"Why doesn't…anyone ever…want to…talk it out…"
