Chapter 3 - Chaser Questionnaire

Haste runs over to the hunting group as they stand together looking at their successful kill, Haste extends his hand upwards to wave as he continues running towards them. "Hey! That was super awesome!" Haste yells out to the group as the archer notices him, Haste can see them better as he closes in, each of them looks way more human than Haste expected, it's very similar anatomy for a different world, from a distance, the only difference he can notice is that they seem have more pointed joints, their elbows and knees have a stronger edge to them, but even that is harder to notice casually. Getting into a distance where he can see each of their features, he assumes what genders they are based on human characteristics. The archer guy points at Haste using his thumb, Haste barely sees his lips moving at the other members, and the battle axe user glances at Haste but doesn't seem to care as she goes back to examining the monster. The girl with the knife looks at Haste before yelling something in a plain, feminine voice "Arshtra!" She puts two fists together and puts them in the air while smiling at Haste, the shield-bearer guy does the same also yelling the same thing to Haste in a deeply masculine voice, Haste grows confused at this but figures it's their greeting. As he does he realizes a problem with his plan though. "Language barriers..." He mutters to himself as he lowers his hand and pauses fairly close to them, the shield-bearer guy walks over as Haste has this realization. The shield-bearer has his shield and crossbow on his back as he runs up to Haste, but as soon as he sees how torn up Haste is he immediately goes wide-eyed and rushes over to Haste quickly before speaking in a worried, questioning tone. "Neftil borean! Lamone keranke ponen?!" He looks down at Haste with his brow furrowed. as he does Haste notices that he also looks human, only with more slanted eyes and rounder ears, the man is pale with no facial hair and is completely bald on top, though he has a scar that looks like a trinity knot on his left cheek. He has yellow eyes that slant with worry, Haste also ignores how muscular he is even under the leather armor he wears as he stands over a good amount over Haste, making Haste just feel like the guy may just be superior to him in every way, a thought going through his head before he replies, "Yeah, I guess a monster slayer would be tall and muscular, huh." But Haste stops thinking to himself and simply replies in English, hoping the man realizes the language barrier too. "If you're asking if I'm okay then yes, I am." As Haste says this the man gives up the worried look and adopts a confused one as he tilts his head quizzically. "Croen Sert bov klish Jiguoren..?" The man replies in the mystery language again as the dagger girl runs up, she's paler than the man, and actually, kind of pretty, she has deep blue hair on the back of her head tied up in a ponytail but has short bangs on the front of her face. She's noticeably taller than the both of them, almost a head above the man. Her dagger is sheathed as she approaches the two of them, going through the same thing the man did, seeing Haste torn up then she starts panicking, only this time she pulls out her dagger. Haste almost immediately gets a sudden flashback to the rusted knife again as she does, his brain switches from the starry night to the illuminated day several times as he starts losing his breath and kneeling again, trying his best to take deep breaths and stop himself from reliving the pain. He falls onto his back, moving away from the girl with one of his hands raised. "No! Stop! Don't!" He closes his eyes as he feels something prick his palm, it feels like he just got a shot in the doctor's office, and for some reason, it calms him as a warm, soothing feeling traverses his veins. He feels his heartbeat slow as his breathing returns to normal. Slowly opening his eyes he sees that the knife has already been put away with the vial full of a red viscous liquid slightly emptier. The woman kneels, facing Haste before turning to the shield-bearer and speaking, "Poen wence ohaoh qerme latrice?" The shield-bearer seems to think about something before responding to her, "Lome." Haste stays sitting there as they discuss, poking what feels like a needled spot in his palm, like the feeling left after a shot in the doctors' office. When he finishes he sees the girl holding one of her throwing knives, it seems just like a smaller version of her other dagger, except this one has a purple vial, she motions for Haste to stick his arm out, so Haste, though very reluctantly, complies, figuring if she had planned violence, she would've inflicted it already. The girl takes the small knife and pricks Haste with it. "Huh, I didn't even feel that." Haste thinks to himself as she empties some of the vial into his arm before pulling up her left arm sleeve to her leather shoulder pad to reveal a throwing knife holster full of the strange syringe knives, most having no copies of their respective color. she puts the emptied purple one into one of the pockets then pulls her sleeve back down as the shield-bearer extends a hand out to the sat-down Haste, which is reluctantly taken as he pulls Haste to his feet with a rough hand and heavy strength. Speaking after Haste wobbles to his side, Haste not understanding how he doesn't get the language situation. "Hey, can you understand me, kid?" Haste's eyes widen as he hears words in English suddenly from the man's mouth. "Woah, yeah I can, you can speak English?" The man does some gestures with his hands as he responds to Haste's query, "No, well-- it's a lot to explain, basically we'll be able to understand each other for a bit, erm how long exactly, Vadana?" The man turns to the knife girl Haste assumes is Vadana now as he also turns his attention to her as she speaks "Well, I injected enough of the brew to last about seventeen hours, but I am kind of low on this one, I figured I wouldn't be needing to refill it because how little we use it." She turns to Haste after answering the shield-bearer's question. "More importantly though, are you all right? your clothes are torn to shreds!" Haste, still calibrating with her speaking English takes a second to respond, "Huh? Oh! Yeah, I'm all right, just scarred up is all." Haste gives this answer way too casually, wanting to ask his own question "Anyways, What the heck was all of that!? That was awesome! That monster was like triple- no quadruple the size of you guys!" Haste's eyes are wide with amazement, as if he was their greatest fan, his curiosity making him forget to ask more important questions as he speaks. The shield-bearer replies with a hearty grin as the woman lightly smiles. "Never even seen chasers before, huh? Well, basically we slay monsters like that all the time, then we harvest them up and sell the good parts, or we commission equipment to be made or upgraded with them, honestly it's a good career-" The woman interrupts in a scornful voice as she furrows her thin eyebrows at the shield-bearer "Rechend, we don't go around slaying Mesanercrines and you know that, I mean if I wasn't here where would you guys even be? Actually, I can answer that one, it's graves." She turns back to Haste as the shield-bearer named Rechend scoffs, "Anyways, you don't seem like you're from here, right? What's your name?" Haste pauses as she says this, thinking to himself for a moment. "Wait a general rule in these rebirth stories is never say you were reborn; hmm, I'll need to have an excuse ready, it'd be better to just play it safe probably." The woman tilts her head as Haste looks like he's deep in thought over what his own name is, Haste breaks his train of thought, however, and answers her. "I'm Haste, it's nice to meet you." Haste extends his hand out for a handshake, but she just looks at it quizzically, "Oh! Sorry, is this your form of greeting? Well, it's nice to meet you too Haste." She smiles saying this as she also extends her hand out, not shaking Haste's hand though, just extending it to the air as Rechend does the same, Haste just awkwardly pulls his hand back as they mimic, Vadana continues "My name is Vadana and this man is Rechend." Rechend smiles as he speaks "Pleasure to meet you, Haste." Rechend stands above both Vadana and Haste while Vadana stands slightly over Haste, he thinks to himself as he notices Vadana is also clearly muscular, "I'm really out of place here..."

Rechend turns as he speaks louder "All right, let us show you to the rest of the party then you can tell us what's up with you later." Vadana also turns around and starts walking with Rechend as Haste follows behind, the three of them heading the slight distance towards the battle axe user and the archer, both harvesting claws, teeth, and pelt, the electricity seemingly gone. Haste asks another question as they walk over to the carcass, "Hey so what's up with those weapons, I mean they looked really cool!" Haste is still gushing with curiosity and astonishment as he asks, trying to hide his excited tone, Vadana replies as soon as it's asked, probably to prevent Rechend from acting like they're as awesome as Haste imagines, "These are simple chaser weapons, most are built specifically for slaying monsters almost any size and strength, excluding supportive ones like mine obviously. Most of them have their own 'unique' abilities, but they really depend on how versatile the user is, it's not that the abilities are situational, it's more of most of them require major skill in creating good openings to use them, and that doesn't even count creating openings for your team! Look, I can tell by your tone here Haste that you already want to be a chaser too, but trust me it's not worth it, I mean the dangers-" Rechend interrupts her as she lectures Haste "Oh come on, let him decide if he wants to have the coolest job himself! You don't need to mother anybody who looks incapable of battle, Vadana, maybe Haste here is hiding some extreme strength from us, I mean he looks like he just came out of surviving in Hrengos without any weapons, that takes either major might or major luck." Vadana sighs as they reach the archer and battle axe user harvesting away at the corpse, The archer stands up putting his carving knife down as he does, and leaving his bow by the monster's body, walking over to Haste he speaks, "Woah, clothes real torn up, huh?" The man speaks with a thick, unfamiliar accent, Haste can't quite make out his face because the archers wearing a mask pulled up over his nose and a hat similar to a flat cap, he notices Haste trying to see what he looks like and responds to the inquisitive look, "Ah sorry, monster guts often smell bad when you get real close." Haste notices the man's wearing bloody gloves, which he takes off as soon as Haste sees them, revealing tan palms as he takes off his mask and cap, Haste realizes he's different looking than the rest of the party, he has tanned skin with reflective silver hair and strange animal-like ears popping out of the top of his head, Haste's mind instantly sparks at the sight, curiosity makes every bone in his body tell him to ask one hundred questions about them, and the thought that creeps up over them all is the realization that the classic beast folk race might exist here. The archer does a hand sign as he speaks "Name's Hashriko, please to meet you..." Haste gets confused as he trails his sentence for a bit but realizes why he was doing so, "Oh, I'm Haste, a pleasure to meet you too, Hashriko." Haste notices he isn't wearing any armor really, instead, wearing very light-looking, clothing, though it seems like an aristocrat's outfit. "Well, I've still got carving to do, oh and by the way--" Hashriko steps closer to Haste, whispering "Don't mind the girl over there, I know she's rather cold looking, but I bet she is interested in who you are as well." Hashriko steps back with a smile before pulling his mask back up, putting his hat back on, and putting his bloodied leather gloves back on, Haste looks to Vadana and Rechend who stand to his left before he speaks a question to them "Hey, is it okay if I get close to the monster too? I know it seemed electric before so I'm not sure-" Rechend steps next to Haste, smiling as he interrupts, "Ah, don't worry about that! We, or rather I defused the electricity with my mud arrows, get as close as you like!" He speaks in a confident tone as Vadana walks past wearing a mask to speak to the archer with the knife syringe in her hand, Rechend continues speaking to Haste as she does, "Actually... Why don't you try some carving yourself?" Rechend places a sharp hooked knife in Haste's hand as he walks with him next to the battle axe girl, Haste instantly notices the odor the archer mentioned as his face contorts in disgust Rechend laughs, "Ah, right! forgot to mention that, huh." Haste groans as he pulls his hoodie over his nose to block the smell a bit, He kneels next to a backpack laid against the corpse, and the battle axe girl sits not too far from him as Rechend kneels to his left, and he speaks to her "Hey, the rest of us introduced ourselves to the future chaser, you need to too you know." Haste looks to his right as the battle axe girl sighs, he quickly notices she's a lot more different than the rest, she has purplish skin and short ruby red hair, she wears heavy armor that goes up to her neck, the chest plate has a large gash in it, probably from the strike he saw delivered by the monster, the girl lets out a simple "Hey." and Haste responds naturally for himself, in astonishment "No way, that armor looks so cool! Oh wait, I wanted to ask you how you fired those spike things into... The..." Haste suddenly realizes just how uninterested she looks as Rechend sighs, "Well, her name is Nimaril." Haste nods to himself as he smiles under his improvised mask, "Well, nice to meet you Nimaril, I'm Haste." Nimaril responds this time as Haste realizes she isn't even protecting herself from the smell while slitting a line down some uncut pelt, "Likewise." her words feel cold enough to freeze Haste, Rechend suddenly saves him from the awkwardness of that conversation as he takes Haste's attention, "All right now pay attention, take the knife and lightly make an incision here." He points at a spot of the matted wool pelt with his thumb as Haste nods, able to follow to command he'd usually be scared of doing purely because of curiosity. Rechend speaks as Haste feels the knife grossly slide between the black meat and pelt, reddish blood leaking out as he does, "All right; good, now slowly and carefully drag it down until your hand aligns with your right shoulder." Haste follows the command to the best of his ability, "Nice work! oka-" Suddenly Haste hears Vadana yelling from behind him with an upset tone, "Rechend! Are you actually trying to make him do your part right now!?" Rechend chuckles as he slumps his arms down, responding in a laugh as Haste stops skinning, "All right, yeah you caught me. He didn't do bad though, especially for a novice." He gives Haste a smirk as he opens his hand for the knife back, Haste slips it out from under the pelt and hands it to him as Rechend says thanks to Haste. Rechend stands up and takes the spot, finishing the cut Haste had started, as Vadana gently smiles at Haste, "So while they're skinning, how about you explain who you are exactly, Haste." Haste nods and walks over, Vadana sits neatly in the grass far away. just barely out of the scent range of the dead monster as Haste follows the lead, pulling his hood down and sitting close by as Vadana speaks, "So-"
