In the following days, Bella Scott didn't see Edward Anderson. She had a vague sense that Cecelia Anderson had told Edward about her wish to remain unmarried, so Edward needed time to digest this news.
It was possible that he would never come looking for her again.
"How come Edward Anderson hasn't visited the curator for several days? Did he find someone new?" Clarky also noticed this and muttered from time to time.
She was worried on Bella's behalf since Bella herself wasn't anxious.
All men are creatures who get tired of the old and look for something new; if Edward happened to set his sights on another woman, what could Bella do?
"Are you just too idle? Do you want me to assign you another job?" Bella glanced at Clarky.
Clarky sensed the threat in her eyes, didn't dare to say more, and obediently left the office, closing the door behind her.
