When we stepped back to the kitchen, Takeshi was already digging through the lower cupboards for the flour, his black tail lashing with eager energy. His small paws tapped the glass jar where we kept the handmilled flour.
"Mind your claws on the seal, little knight," I said with an affectionate laugh, setting Sel down onto the linoleum by the island. "You'll snap a claw trying to pry that clamp open."
"Mrow! It's stuck, Ma!" Takeshi chirped back, shifting his weight onto his haunches and batting persistently at the metal wire with both soot-colored front paws. "The troll locked up the cookie powder!"
Regi raised an eyebrow. "It wasn't me. Blame Mrs. Troll."
I huffed. "Hey, don't include me in your roleplaying game."
Takeshi giggled and ran out to let me reach into the lower cabinet. I easily clicked the jar open with a familiar, satisfying snap of the wire latch, then hoisted the heavy glass canister up onto the wooden island which doubled as our dining table.
