Carriages flooded the streets leading to the palace gates, stuck in the never-ending traffic. The horses stepped in place, grunting and groaning, as the coachmen held onto their reins. Inside the carriages, noble ladies waved their fans, taking shallow breaths, as the corsets squeezed their stomachs and waists, while the noblemen adjusted their neckwear. Their kids squirmed in their seats, impatient from the prolonged wait. It was a familiar sight, just like any other year, on the evening of the Foundation Ball.
