Curly fell silent, just staring mournfully at Adrian Desmond with her small eyes. Her gaze made his heart soften and melt; he couldn't bear to tease her any longer and make her sad.
"I was just teasing you. That little red horse, Dad bought it especially for you. I wouldn't give it to anyone else; it's reserved just for our precious girl," he said.
"Hmph, I don't care! Give it to whomever you want," Curly replied, turning her head away haughtily.
"You say one thing and mean another, you little rascal. If I really gave it to George, you'd surely bite me again."
The two women in his life, one big and one small, had Adrian Desmond completely wrapped around their little fingers. He figured he'd never be able to break free in this lifetime. It was truly a sweet vexation.
"Dad, I don't like George. Can you not be his godfather anymore?"
