Kanto → Elite Four → Challenges
Topic: Bruno vs. Blaine
Original Poster: Curious bystander (League Illuminati member)
So, it's official. We've been eating good for the first time after several years. Lance challenging the Elite Four for a spot finally rattled things awake in this dusty Pryce era. He beat Bruno, and maybe because he's seeking a rematch, Bruno now wants to take Blaine's spot. It's unclear how that would actually work, as it could also just bump Lance to the position of third Elite Four member without having to re-challenge Bruno.
Regardless, Bruno vs. Blaine is going to be an absolute treat. Fighting types vs. fire types. No serious type advantages or disadvantages, just two of Kanto's five strongest trainers duking it out at the start of the Indigo conference. Live or on TV, no matter where you're watching from, strap in your seatbelts. What are your predictions for this battle, why is it happening, what will it lead to?
Bruno's known team: Machamp, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Machoke, Hitmontop, Primeape, Heracross (Rumours has it he's been training up an Onix)
Blaine's known team: Arcanine, Magmar, Rapidash, Magcargo, Charizard, Typhlosion, Ninetails, Growlithe

Blaine's older than sliced bread. But to be fair, so are Agatha and Pryce. When the three of them plus Oak ruled the Elite Four, it was peak era. Would be sad to see Blaine go, as it would leave only half of the Elite Four of my childhood, but sometimes you gotta shake things up. Also, to be honest, Bruno's sweat probably smells way better than Blaine's
►Friendly Ghost (Verified Youngster)
Realistically speaking Bruno has no chance, Blaine's been in his seat for too many years, he has too much experience. Also, Bruno challenged randomly without preparing just because he got salty over his loss to Lance. Impulsiveness does not a winner make. Also, how are fighting types going to win over fire types? Stay far away and get burned from a distance, get closer, get burned from up close. GG. Betting odds are on Blaine's side, and so am I. Easy money for anyone wanting to jump on the Blaine-wagon.
►Dissmypokanddie (Verified Ace-Trainer)
@Friendly Ghost thank you random youngster, I will heed your financial advice. Your wisdom is balsam to my soul. All my life's savings on Blaine please...
@Seatsniffer69 You had me in the first half, but I should have known from the name that it was just a setup for a shitty joke. Regardless, you're right, Bruno is younger and quite frankly just wants it more. Blaine's been talking about retiring for years now.
►Hitorhit (Verified Trainer)
Blaine doesn't stand a chance, Bruno went to my dad to exchange pointers, no chance he could lose now! My dad was walking kinda funny after though...

@Hitorhit respectfully, flush yourself down a toilet

It will be an interesting match to be sure, though it will likely be an uphill battle for Bruno. His team is primarily composed of physical power houses, burns are gonna be problematic for much of his team.
►FireTypesRuleZ (verified Elite Four)
You could say that he'll have to invest in some... Burn heals...
►Bugsforlife (Verified Trainer)
Never have I lost so much respect for such a respected trainer so fast as I have for that pun
►FightingTypesRulez (Verified Youngster)
@ Friendly Ghost Blaine does not stand a chance. I mean, look at his scrawny arms. Only skin and bone I tell ya. I mean how much can he even bench??? Speaking about that, how much do YOU BENCH??!!!! HOW CAN YOUR POKEMON FIGHT IF YOU CANT???!!!!!!
►Friendly Ghost (verified youngster)
@ FightingTypesRulez Idk my bench atm, maybe you can ask your mom? She's the current minimum… So, about a house worth?

Quick someone, write a fanfic, we have new canon material!!!!

Don't do it last time I took finical advice from a youngster he convinced me to battle and sweeped my whole team before taking what was left in my wallet. Never make bets on battles.
►Bugsforlife (Verified Trainer)
Ah the price of underestimating your opponent. I love it when that happens.
► GengarSupremacy (Verified Ghost Trainer)
Bruno is clearly desperate, a team full of fighting types and he suddenly has an Onix he is training up? Could he be anymore obvious? Maybe if he stayed in his lane and stopped trying to win with a surprise type advantage he might have a chance. He's a Master of fighting types, not rock types, does he even know how to train an Onix lmaoooo
►RockHard
Long and arduous process, training an Onix is. Not know if succeed, Bruno can. For trying, fool he might be
►Cubonerd
@ GengarSupremacy Bruno is nothing if not a stubborn idiot. He'll see everyone dunking on him for training an Onix and he'll train even harder. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up with 2 of them (jk, now THAT would be stupid).
►BerryBandit (Verified Berry Sampler)
@GengarSupremacy A trainer at his level wouldn't have an especially difficult time training an Onix. The resources available to him will certainly be beneficial too. Despite saying this, i can't claim to be particulairly impressed as well however. When commiting to being a Monotype trainer, one commits to finding ways to adapt to the inherit weaknesses of their chosen type. Altough i applaud his adaptability, i'm dissapointed he only thought to make these changes this late in his career...
►HardAsStone
Honestly, considering how awesome rock types are I'm not surprised Bruno is trying to pivot to change the type his team is composed of. I mean, have you seen them. So beautiful... So hard... So majestic... Good Luck Bruno, the world needs more rock type trainers, if you want you can trade me your machamp for a new specimen I found. Half rock, half bug with berry juices inside, he'll rock Blaine's world!

►Smallbutskilled
Wait, I'm a little lost here. I thought this was the Bruno x Blaine thread?
►T-TarSupremacy (Verified Tyranitar) (Pseudo Trainer) (Verified Dark Specialist)
@ Friendly Ghost. I had a battle with Bruno right after his loss to Lance. While I did notice he was a little frustrated, honestly it seemed like he was more super focused and determined. He was frustrated. Considering this Blaine match I'm willing to bet Bruno's match has more to do with preparing himself for stronger opponents. Considering how I heard he's been training with other fighting masters, I'm willing to bet he's only fighting Blaine to see where his training has taken him.
►feraligatr_best_starter (verified gym trainer)
honestly I think Bruno can do it but I think he chooses the wrong Pokémon to train he only has those onix to cover his weaknesses to flying and to have something to hit hard against fire which he can already do with all the rock type moves his fighting types can learn like rock slide and stone edge and if he really did want to just beat Blaine then there plenty of better Pokémon that ether fit his mo or are just better rock types and he isn't limited to just kanto Pokémon he's right beside johto so he has more options examples for one's that fit his mo that deal with psychic and fire types are Poliwrath and Heracross. Better rock types included Golem, Rhydon/Rhyperior and Tyranitar (don't tell me he can't get one he's strong enough to get one in the wild and he specialise in fighting types plus he's rich just buy an egg) another option for psychic types that is faster than most of them is Dodrio and helps with ghosts another normal type that I think he should tran is Ursaring as it knows a bunch of dark type moves and with its ability guts has literally zero fear of fire type moves burning it and out there pick I think is good because it fits his personality and style while also being a different type to deal with different situations and also knows a bunch of dark type moves is Granbull I know it strange but it's also a way to resist fire types because of its fairy typing this concludes my POKÉ talk.... AND THE BEST OF ALL THESE OPTIONS NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD ONLY ONE HE SHOULD HAVE IS FERALIGATR BABBBBBYYYYYYY!!!!!
Ps. If he doesn't evolve at least one of his Onix's into Steelix if not BOTH after the Blaine fight I'm gonna riot
►Waterboardingenthusiast
Indeed, Feraligatr is the best fighting type Pokemon available. It has legs for Low Kick and two arms for Close Combat. It even has a tail, which makes it superior to most fighting types. The fact that the doesn't have a Poliwhirl either is a permanent mark of shame on his face
►feraligatr_best_starter (verified gym trainer)

►JuicyShuckle (verified breeder) We shuckle enthusiasts are cheering for Bruno! Come on by and get some shuckle berry juice on the house! We're betting on you!

How does he keep getting away with it? Sure, he beat a minor gym for his fourth badge, but four badges for a youngster is unheard of. The battle between Rattata and Sabrina's strongest Kadabra was amazing. Nobody can tell me this was a fight between youngsters.
►+Webb
How are you glazing someone with a Win/Loss ratio of 42/132? Lol, Lmao even. Start a fan club already…

@+Webb One of those losses was literally against fucking Bruno of all people…

Joey woke up bright and early the next morning to the roar of activity coming from thousands of people inhabiting a village that may have been meant for a few hundred.
Noticeably, there were no Pidgey chirping when he exited his outdated Ranger tent to stretch and yawn in the clearing he'd found.
A few seconds later, Rattata also exited the tent and rubbed sleepily at his eyes. After having found their camping spot and staking the ground to reserve it, they hadn't committed to any more training and had instead taken a day off.
In fact, the whole conference viewing experience was going to be a vacation from training. Joey's Pokemon would likely gain just as much from watching the battles as they would from training during this period, although he wouldn't say no to a battle if someone challenged him.
The only question was how many Pokemon he could reasonably release to watch the battles if he was sitting on his assigned seat with the Poketech gang. Diglett would be tough, and Metapod was getting quite large. Well, he was sure that he could at least leave Rattata on his shoulder and have Misdreavus retreat to her pendant. She could still see while in that state.
Maybe Michelle's VIP offer would potentially include the ability to release his whole team, so it was worth considering. He should still pop by the Poketech people, however, considering they gave him the ticket.
Maybe after the Bruno and Blaine starting match; however, that was the most important match to witness during this trip.
Joey had battled Bruno, as odd as that sounded, and had also gotten his butt kicked by Lorelei who he suspected would win this year's tournament. But, two members of the Elite Four battling each other. He'd seen it on tapes, sure, but, well, seeing was believing.
He cooked himself a breakfast, barely able to think out of sheer excitement. He'd been watching the tapes of champions and Elite Four members for years now. This was actually mostly out of fun as the tactics were too advanced for him; he gained more from watching the normal conference participants and their tricks he could usually at least steal.
Watching two masters battle was a pleasure; to learn from the experience, one had to have already attained a certain level. Joey wasn't there yet. Maybe he would be next year. After the conference he'd have a lot more experience.
He and his team scarfed down the simple stew Joey had prepped alongside everyone's side of vitamins, minerals and Pokechow to provide the requisite Protein.
Once done and having only 30 minutes on the clock, Joey went to talk to his team.
"We'll go watch the battles now," he started, before pointing to Misdreavus, the floating ghost having started to wander off absent-mindedly, attracted by a beam of light piercing the tree canopy and illuminating a yellow daisy sticking out from the green grass. "Misdreavus, I was thinking you can go back into your pendant so I can carry you around more easily," Joey started, but before he could truly finish, the light pink magenta pearl necklace the Pokemon was known for was already lying on the ground.
He blinked before going to pick it up and putting it around his neck. In his opinion, it fit oddly well with his new outfit. It added more colour to the ensemble and fit with the purple he had going on.
He turned to the rest of his team. "Rattata, you'll be on my shoulder," he said, his starter quickly scampering up his thankfully very resistant new clothing and settling on his right shoulder.
"And the two of you," Joey continued, pointing to Diglett and Metapod, "I'll find a way to release into the stands somehow," he finished awkwardly, raising the two Pokeballs.
Diglett shrugged and dematerialised, seemingly not bothered by potentially not seeing the tournament. Metapod, however, let the red light wash over her and screamed angrily. "Meta, meta, metapod!" she articulated, reinforcing the statement by spitting a big wad of purple on the ground. It sizzled away at the grass, leaving behind nothing but brown and purple sludge. The indent was deeper than it had been months ago…
"You want to stay out so you can keep practicing?" Joey asked.
"Metapod!" Came the resolute answer.
"How to say this," Joey muttered to himself. He couldn't leave Metapod out here, but he also couldn't carry her around. The average Metapod weighed 10 kg and reached Joey's thighs. His Metapod weighed 20 kg and reached almost his chest at this point. She was a solid one metre long.
"I don't thin-" Joey started before being interrupted by a sludge of toxic being spat right at his face.
-/-
People were whispering, and people were pointing. One old lady dropped her bag of snacks, and her five or so grandchildren quickly swarmed around her to annihilate with their greedy little mouths what had likely been the snack rations for the whole day.
Joey was only capable of doing what he was doing right now because of his aura. He was only 140 cm of pure child muscle, but even athletic, no 40kg child could carry around a 20kg Pokemon for any significant amount of time.
But he was. It was hard, but he was.
The string was wrapped around his torso, suspending the green crescent-shaped bug to his back where she happily concocted her posions and took in the sights. She was essentially a whole ass hiking backpack and Joey was the hiker.
The scene was even funnier due to the magenta necklace on Joey's neck and the Rattata on his shoulder.
"Tatta, ta," Joey's starter chittered as the boy struggled his way towards the private viewing box Michelle had invited him to.
"I know you could take her, but you guys are on vacation, for all that some of you don't want to use it," Joey said through gritted teeth. "It's a trainer's duty to take care of their Pokemon," he added.
He shakily pulled up his Pokenav to text Michelle that he was arriving as he neared a side entrance to a stadium defended by a buff ranger with a Ryhorn by his side. The man in the orange jacket watched amusedly, as Joey slowly made his way towards him.
"Pass?" the man asked.
"Ryh," the Ryhron said dubiously, turning its beady little eyes to Joey to take in the spectacle.
"Michelle's plus one," Joey wheezed.
The man's eyes lit up. "Oh, Michelle? She told me to let in a young trainer if they mentioned her name. Why aren't you participating, though?" he asked. "Did you get seeded past the qualifiers?"
"Youngster, four badges," Joey forced out.
The man smirked. "Ha, her maternal instincts finally kicked in, I see. To think she rejected me back then only to adopt some brat," he said rudely before shrugging and stepping aside.
Joey ignored the man, deciding to simply erase the interaction from his brain and stepped into the brightly lit cement hallway. There was only one way to go, so he went up the stairs, hearing more and more sounds as he approached the top.
A bright blob of red with purple hair was already waiting for him on the top of the stairs, cast blurrily against the light behind her and against Joey's weary eyes.
"Sorry if the doorman was rude," Michelle said once Joey finally managed to make it up the stairs. "He's some idiot that bothered me in my first year as a trainer. Suits him, checking the tickets," she muttered darkly before blinking at Joey in surprise.
"Why are you carrying your Metapod on your back?" she asked. "And why is it so big?"
"What my baby wants, my baby gets," Joey gritted through clenched teeth. The stairs had taken the last of his strength.
Michelle simply shrugged. He guessed that when you were a powerful trainer, you'd seen enough weird stuff without being bothered by it. Didn't Ash carry a Pupitar or something in the anime, or was Joey misremembering?
"Anyway, come with me, we got a private booth with one other person," Michelle said and bid him to follow.
Joey struggled behind her into a brightly lit corridor with single doors spaced about ten meters apart, presumably leading into different rooms from which one could see the arena.
The corridor was empty as he followed her, until one of the doors suddenly opened and a man that Joey was intimately familiar with stepped out.
The dark-clad gym leader of Fuschia idly glanced to the left and to the right, stopping at Joey.
"Jonathan," the man greeted with a nod as Michelle and Joey made to pass.
Joey stopped to return the greeting. "Koga, a pleasant surprise," he reciprocated, channeling more aura into his body so as not to look so winded.
"Meta, meta, meta," the Pokemon on his back enthusiastically said. Joey couldn't see her, but he could hear the sizzling of the cement as, presumably, some poison landed on it.
"I see that you're doing your best to maximise training time," the older man muttered with an arched eyebrow.
"We usually don't do it like this," Joey replied with a laugh. "But since I decided to take the conference viewing time as a vacation from training, and thus there's no set time set aside for it, Metapod decided she wanted to assure herself of her progress in different ways."
"A well-honed motivation and will to execute will have you evolve in no time," the gym leader said consolingly to Joey's Pokemon before turning to the trainer. "Enjoy the battle!" he then walked off towards… the male bathroom inserted in between one of the rooms and disappeared inside.
"You know that really breaks the mystique," Joey muttered as he and Michelle continued on their way.
"What is up with your Metapod?" Michelle asked as she finally stopped in front of a room labelled C1. C presumably didn't stand for champion, but rather challenger.
Just as they were about to enter, someone called out Joey's name from behind.
"Joey!"
This caused the boy to turn around and blinked as he saw a blonde girl coming at them from another side of the corridor, running at him. Behind her were three other girls with various shades of bright hair and a jolly looking older couple.
"Daisy?" Joey asked confusedly as the girl used her running start to jump high into the air with limbs extended.
Then she promptly crashed into Joey, who usually would have been able to catch her, but this time, he was already carrying 20kg, which caused them both to be thrown towards the ground.
They would have landed on it as well if it hadn't been for the stabilising and frantic two hands of Michelle, who almost fell over herself grounding the two of them.
"Children, children," King said with a booming laugh as he stepped forward in an attempt to pull the glomping Daisy off the youngster.
It didn't work, and the girl was stuck quite firmly to his torso.
"Why didn't you call me?" she complained into his air. "I can't believe we didn't exchange numbers, fighting criminals and Blastoise and everything. I thought we'd be friends or rivals or something, but you just disappeared after losing to my dad. Isn't he the strongest? Aren't water Pokemon cool? Do you wanna see my new Pokemon? Dad got me a Squirtle so that I wouldn't have to keep hunting for that Wartortle I saw, although I'm pretty sure it just evolved into Blastoise. Anyway, the Blastoise settled down into the area we were clearing with a full brood, and there was no development there. Haha, a bunch of investors went bankrupt. Why are you wearing new clothes? They suit you, but I think the blue cap was better, get it, because it's the colour of water?" she chattered endlessly, and very, very loudly into his ear.
King, meanwhile, was starting to grow red in the face, one of his big hands grasping around his daughter's torso, pulling her while another one was shoving at Joey.
Joey himself was struggling not to topple, and so was Michelle, who had implicated herself in this situation by trying to prevent the two kids from falling.
The situation probably looked pretty funny from the outside, but Joey wasn't laughing because by the time they'd all been unentangled, he was on his knees, gasping for breath from being shaken around so violently.
"Daisy," he gasped as King started carrying off the wildly resisting and red in the face girl. "Let's exchange Pokenav numbers in the first break," he barely finished before having to cough and wheeze.
"Nice to see you, Joey! Glad to see in the tournament that you've been putting the technical machine to good use!" he said before the door to his family's private room slammed shut behind him.
"I feel violated," Joey managed to gasp after a few more coughs.
"That's what you get for disappearing on a girl, I guess," Michelle said with a deadpan as she looked down at the youngster, leaning on the wall to catch her breath herself. There was a complicated look in her rich brown chocolate eyes. She looked. "Come on," she said, "We'll miss the battle. By the way, I have to warn you, we're sharing the booth with the daug-" She opened the door halfway through the sentence.
Erika, who had been sitting inside all prim and proper, turned from the couch she was sitting on to look at the arrivals. "Joey!" she exclaimed. "So nice to see you. I can't believe you were right about Lance winning!"
Joey awkwardly laughed while Michelle gave him a disbelieving look.
"You little piece of shit," she muttered angrily. "What have you been up to while I was in Hoenn? Why do the daughters of all the gym leaders know your name?" she demanded.
Joey looked up at the angry purple-haired girl with his red and purple face. He was starting to feel nauseous from being jostled, carrying so much weight and being talked to at such a rapid pace by the excitable Daisy.
"Bleurgh," was the sound Metapod on his back made before she vomited a toxin onto the floor.
"Your Metapod knows Sludge?" Erika exclaimed, "That's so cool!"
Smelling the not-so-pleasant poison into the floor of the private viewing booth, one of the walls facing the stadium was just a window, Joey promptly showed Erika that Metapod wasn't the only cool one, but that he also knew Sludge.
"Bleurgh."
-/-
In the camera room of the stadium, a large wall with 12 screens depicted a variety of scenes.
Mikey, the visual coordinator of the Indigo conference, spoke into a microphone, communicating with a few of the camera crews on the ground.
"Now zoom in on a few of the private boxes. The battle's about to start in five minutes; let's catch some of that excitement," he said clearly so as to not be misheard.
Several of the screens suddenly panned to the private boxes, which one could see into due to them having a glass wall for the viewing pleasures of the elites inside them.
Mikey's quick and trained eye scanned through the boxes. Agatha looked bored and was talking to her shadow, Pryce hadn't bothered coming, Surge was scratching his balls and drinking a beer, The Celadon gym leader's daughter however, who was sharing a room with the challenger that would face either Bruno or Blaine the next was talking with a well-dressed boy carrying a Metapod on his back. A glance towards another camera assured him that Lance was just standing there, not doing anything.
He clicked the appropriate button to put the gym leader's daughter and the other boy on the mainstream coverage of the event and clicked another button on his earpiece to switch channels to the commentator. "Heartwarming scene, two young friends discussing the upcoming match, excitement in the air," he provided as a brief intro for the commentator to riff at.
The Metapod on the boy's back suddenly attacked the floor with a vicious sludge.
Mikey muted himself. "That's weird; I didn't know Metapod could learn Sludge."
Then, immediately after, before Mikey could switch screens, the presumed trainer of the Metapod vomited on the floor.
Mikey hurried to press the button to switch screens, but the scene shocked him so much that he accidentally pressed the button for the zoom, leading the whole arena and half of Kanto to suddenly get a close-up of the vomit puddle on the floor.
"Ups," Mikey muttered apologetically before finally managing to switch screens.
Unfortunately, the screen he switched too was the one showing Lance, who himself seemed to have been looking at one of the four large screens hung up above the arena facing all four directions, suddenly slipping from apparent surprise that the show had chosen to show a boy vomiting, of all things. The dragon trainer shifted a step, but it would prove to be a deadly step as his legs got caught up in his slightly too large cape, sending the red-haired boy sprawling to the floor.
