In the darkness, Sophie Sullivan couldn't see his face or guess what he was feeling at the moment.
All she could do was rely on her hearing and the tone of his voice to paint a picture and make an educated guess.
"...Why?"
She wanted to ask him what he was feeling right now, but the word "why" came out instead.
"What do you mean, 'why'?"
Sophie, despite the pain on her face, asked, "Why did you save me and not Amelia Shaw?"
"How do you think you ended up bound here?"
Sophie knew it was Amelia Shaw's doing, but... hadn't he repeatedly protected Amelia Shaw before?
"Amelia Shaw conspired with Frank Mitchell, who in turn collaborated with George Field. Consequently, her fate today is her own doing."
Uncharacteristically, Thomas Shannon offered her an explanation, dispelling her doubts.
"So that's how it is... You were protecting her before, just to find out who she was colluding with?"
"You're not hopelessly foolish, then."
