Chapter 46 - [Chapter 44]

----

The next morning started quietly.

Which, in the Seo household, meant there were only three cats arguing over the warmest spot near the window instead of five.

Jiwoo had already left for school.

Wooin had gone as well.

Jisuk, after loudly declaring that he was "absolutely not interested" in the awakened academy, had somehow ended up walking in the same direction as them.

Which was not suspicious at all.

According to Jisuk.

Everyone else disagreed.

"I'm only going because you two are begging me to go," Jisuk had insisted.

Jiwoo had smiled.

"You said it wasn't your thing."

"It isn't."

"But you're going."

"Because someone has to make sure you idiots don't get yourselves killed."

Wooin had looked at him.

"Is that your reason?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Obviously."

Jiwoo laughed.

Asuka, standing at the doorway with a cup of tea, had simply watched them leave.

Three different personalities.

Three completely different reasons.

All heading toward the same future.

She had seen this.

Not every detail.

Not every conversation.

But enough.

The academy.

The friendships.

The fights.

The changes.

The way Jiwoo's presence would slowly affect people who had never considered standing beside someone like him.

And now?

She was curious.

Which was annoying.

Because curiosity was usually the beginning of problems.

And Asuka liked peace.

She liked mornings where the biggest concern was whether Kayden would admit he liked being brushed.

She liked feeding cats.

She liked reading.

She liked sitting quietly while Jiwoo cooked too much food and insisted everyone needed more vegetables.

She liked doing whatever she wanted.

The awakened world was exhausting.

Everyone trying to prove they were stronger than everyone else.

A headache.

A massive headache.

But…

Jiwoo wanted to go.

So she would go.

Simple.

By late morning, Asuka was home alone.

Technically.

The cats were there.

Kayden was there.

So she was not alone.

She had just finished showering and stood in front of the mirror, drying her hair with a towel.

Her hair was still damp, falling loosely around her shoulders.

She had changed into comfortable clothes.

A pair of shorts.

An oversized shirt that belonged to Jiwoo.

It was too big.

Which was why she liked it.

Comfortable.

Soft.

Smelled like home.

Kayden was sitting on the bed, watching her with narrowed eyes.

"You stole his shirt."

Asuka looked over.

"No."

"Yes."

"It was offered."

"By him?"

"Yes."

"Then it's not stealing."

"Technically."

"Correct."

Kayden sighed.

"You're impossible."

Asuka continued drying her hair.

Then stopped.

Slowly.

Kayden noticed immediately.

The change was subtle.

Most people would not catch it.

But Kayden was not most people.

"What?"

Asuka did not answer.

Her future sight flickered.

Not a vision.

Not fully.

More like a warning.

A thread.

Something shifting.

Someone entering a future that had not belonged to them.

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Never fear.

Calculation.

Kayden stood.

"What did you see?"

Asuka looked toward the window.

"Visitors."

A pause.

"Awakeners."

Kayden's eyes sharpened.

"From where?"

Asuka closed her eyes for a moment.

Then opened them.

"Shinhwa."

That immediately annoyed him.

Not because it was Shinhwa.

Jiyoung had earned his respect.

But because he knew organizations.

Even good ones.

Even trustworthy ones.

Always had people moving beneath the surface.

Politics existed everywhere.

Asuka set the towel over her shoulder.

"Not Jiyoung."

Kayden's expression darkened.

"Someone investigating."

"Yes."

"Because of the academy."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then Asuka sighed.

"I wanted a calm morning."

Kayden looked at her.

"You knew this was coming."

"I did."

"And you're still annoyed."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because knowing something will happen does not make it less irritating."

Kayden stared.

Then nodded.

"Fair."

The moment Asuka reached the stairs, she felt it.

Two presences.

One already down.

One moving.

The first thing she saw was one of the cats.

The grey scarred cat.

Standing in the middle of the living room.

Fur raised.

Eyes sharp.

Facing one of the intruders.

The man wore a mask.

An awakened.

And judging by the broken furniture around him—

He had made the mistake of underestimating a cat.

The grey cat moved like water.

A blur.

A dodge.

A scratch.

The masked man stumbled back.

"What the hell?"

Asuka's expression changed.

Cold.

The kind of cold that did not come from anger.

It came from judgment.

Because she had seen what happened.

They had kicked the cats away.

Not pushed them.

Not moved them aside.

Kicked them.

And that was enough.

The tip of her finger twitched.

A small spark of electricity danced across her skin.

Kayden noticed.

"Asuka."

"I know."

Her voice was quiet.

Controlled.

But the temperature of the room dropped anyway.

The other awakened turned toward her.

And froze.

Because beneath the usual bandages—

Her eyes were visible.

Sky blue.

Clear.

Beautiful.

And completely unreadable.

The man stared.

For one second.

Then he saw movement.

Kayden.

The orange cat moved.

One strike.

One flash of force.

The second awakened collapsed instantly.

The masked man looked between the fallen teammate and Asuka.

Confusion.

Fear.

And then—

A tiny electrical spark.

Not a lightning bolt.

Not an attack.

Barely anything.

Just enough.

His body locked.

His vision blurred.

The last thing he saw was the grey scarred cat standing proudly over his defeated opponent.

And a pair of impossible blue eyes looking at him with absolute calm.

Then darkness.

Silence returned.

Asuka stared down at them.

Kayden shifted beside her.

"You could have done more."

"Yes."

"You didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I was annoyed."

Kayden paused.

"That is somehow worse."

Asuka walked toward the storage space connected to her spatial ability.

She reached inside.

And pulled out rope.

Kayden stared.

A long silence.

"Asuka."

"Yes?"

"Why do you have rope?"

She looked at him.

Then at the rope.

Then shrugged.

"Preparation."

"For what?"

"Situations like this."

Kayden stared.

"You prepared rope specifically for awakened kidnappers?"

"Yes."

"You're strange."

"Thank you."

"That was not praise."

"I know."

The rope itself was not normal.

Seals were written across the fibers.

Small.

Precise.

Almost invisible.

Kayden's eyes narrowed.

Of course.

Of course she had sealing ropes.

Of course.

She could not just have normal emergency supplies.

She had to have emergency supplies capable of restraining awakened people.

"Asuka."

"Yes?"

"Do not tell me you have more."

She looked away.

Kayden's eyes widened.

"You do."

"Maybe."

"How many?"

"I do not remember."

"That is not a normal answer."

She ignored him.

The ropes wrapped around the two awakeners.

The moment they tightened, their energy flow weakened.

No ability activation.

No escape.

Kayden sighed.

"You're ridiculous."

"I know."

She checked the time.

"Jiwoo should be out soon."

Kayden understood immediately.

She wanted this handled before he came home.

Not because she thought he could not handle it.

Because she did not want him worrying.

Asuka pulled out her phone.

"Calling Inhyuk."

Kayden's tail flicked.

"That poor man."

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

"Asuka!"

Inhyuk's voice was immediately cheerful.

A little too cheerful.

Because Asuka rarely called.

"Good morning."

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"You called me."

"Yes."

Another pause.

Inhyuk immediately became serious.

"What happened?"

Asuka looked at the two tied-up awakeners.

"There has been a situation."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Inhyuk knew enough by now.

When Asuka was calm, something was usually very wrong.

"What kind of situation?"

"Two awakeners entered my home."

Silence.

"They attacked the cats."

The silence became colder.

"They what?"

Asuka explained.

Briefly.

Efficiently.

No exaggeration.

No emotion.

Which somehow made it worse.

By the time she finished, Inhyuk's tone had completely changed.

"I'm coming."

When Inhyuk arrived, he immediately understood.

The tied-up awakeners.

The damaged room.

The cats watching suspiciously.

But then—

He looked at Asuka.

And stopped.

Because for the first time…

He saw her eyes.

No bandages.

No covering.

Just those sky-blue eyes.

They were beautiful.

That was the first thought.

The second was—

Something is wrong.

Not wrong with her.

With his understanding of her.

Because he had thought Asuka Seo was simply unusual.

A quiet girl.

A powerful young awakener.

A strange child with incredible instincts.

He had been wrong.

Those eyes were not normal.

They were not just pretty.

They felt ancient.

Like they had seen things no fifteen-year-old should have seen.

And yet—

She was still standing there with a towel over her shoulder because she had been drying her hair when this happened.

That contradiction was somehow even stranger.

Inhyuk blinked.

Then realized.

She probably forgot.

The bandages.

Because she was irritated.

That was the only explanation.

"Asuka."

"Yes?"

"Your eyes."

She stared.

Then touched her face.

A pause.

"Oh."

Inhyuk sweat-dropped internally.

She really had forgotten.

"You usually cover them."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Comfort."

That answer was technically true.

Not the whole truth.

But true.

Inhyuk looked away.

He understood.

Some things were private.

And whatever those eyes were…

He had a feeling Asuka did not like people seeing them.

Still.

Beautiful.

Definitely beautiful.

The Shinhwa agents arrived shortly after.

They carefully removed the two captured awakeners.

Asuka allowed the seals to disappear.

The ropes became ordinary.

No need anymore.

Inhyuk watched.

He noticed.

He noticed everything.

The way she released control.

The way the invisible pressure vanished.

The way the cats relaxed around her.

Especially the grey scarred cat.

"You have strong cats."

Asuka looked over and nodded.

"They are good cats."

Inhyuk smiled.

"Yes."

He glanced toward the injured one.

"They protected themselves well."

Asuka nodded.

"They are smart."

Inhyuk hesitated.

Then bowed slightly.

"This will not happen again."

Asuka looked at him.

"We cannot know that."

Inhyuk paused.

She continued.

"But I know you will investigate."

That surprised him.

Because it was not blind trust.

It was understanding.

Asuka knew organizations had problems.

She knew there could be internal conflicts.

She knew Jiyoung's authority did not magically erase every issue beneath her.

But she also knew Inhyuk.

And she knew he meant it.

"Thank you," she said quietly.

Inhyuk smiled.

"You're welcome."

Then he left with the agents.

The house became quiet again.

Asuka immediately walked toward the grey cat.

The coldness disappeared.

Almost instantly.

She crouched down.

"Come here."

The cat approached.

She gently picked it up.

A small glow passed beneath her fingers.

Not bright.

Not dramatic.

Just enough.

A reverse flow.

Healing.

The soreness faded.

The cat relaxed.

Kayden watched.

And this time…

He understood.

The cold eyes.

The anger.

The restraint.

All of it.

Asuka did not care about rankings. She did not care about fame. She did not care about power struggles.

But she cared about very few things. And those few things? She would destroy anyone who threatened them.

Kayden had seen her eyes before.

Many times.

But not like this.

Usually, beneath the bandages, they were calm.

Curious.

Amused.

Sometimes sleepy.

Soft.

Now?

They were sharp.

Focused.

A reminder that beneath the lazy girl who fed cats and read books was someone who had survived impossible things.

Kayden stared.

"Asuka."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"You know normal people do not carry sealing ropes."

"Yes."

"Or heal cats with mysterious techniques."

"Yes."

"Or stare down intruders like they're inconveniences."

"Yes."

A pause.

"Are you aware how strange you are?"

Asuka thought about it.

"Yes."

Kayden nodded.

"Good."

She looked back at the cat.

Then he added,

"But I prefer the version of you that argues about books and drinks strawberry milk."

Asuka blinked.

A small smile appeared.

"Are you worried?"

"No."

"You are."

"No."

"Mr. Kayden."

"No."

She smiled.

The tension finally loosened.

The grey cat purred.

Kayden looked away.

"Don't misunderstand."

"I didn't."

"I just prefer less terrifying Asuka."

"Less terrifying?"

"Yes."

"That sounds like a compliment."

"It is not."

"It sounds like one."

Kayden sighed.

There it was.

The normal Asuka again.

Annoying.

Calm.

Impossible.

But better.

Much better.

And for once, Kayden was grateful.

Because he had seen what happened when Asuka stopped being calm. And he much preferred the girl who wanted a lazy life. The one who read books. Fed cats. Drank strawberry milk.

And complained about being interrupted.

That Asuka?

That was the one he wanted around. Not the one with those cold blue eyes. Not because that version scared him. But because it reminded him how much she had already endured. And how much she was still carrying.

So he did what he always did.

Pretended not to care.

"Also."

Asuka looked over.

"Yes?"

"Your hair is still wet."

She blinked.

"Oh."

"You were fighting intruders with wet hair."

"Yes."

"That is ridiculous."

"I forgot."

Kayden stared.

Then sighed.

"Unbelievable."

Asuka smiled faintly.

"Thank you."

"Still not praise."

"I know."

And finally—

The house felt normal again.

Inhyuk reported directly to Jiyoung. Not through a written memo. Not through a subordinate.

Directly.

Because some matters did not belong on paper until the people involved had already been handled.

Jiyoung sat behind her desk, composed as always, one hand resting lightly against the arm of her chair. The afternoon light fell across the office windows, soft and elegant, but the atmosphere inside the room was anything but gentle.

Inhyuk stood before her.

His expression was serious.

Too serious.

That alone told Jiyoung enough.

"What did you find?"

Inhyuk lowered his head.

"The two intruders were Shinhwa people."

Jiyoung's gaze sharpened.

Not visibly.

Not much.

But Inhyuk had worked with her long enough to notice even the smallest change.

"Who sent them?"

Inhyuk's jaw tightened slightly.

"Chairman Lee's side."

Silence.

The name settled into the room like something unpleasant.

Jiyoung did not immediately respond.

Inhyuk continued, "More specifically, people connected to Chairman Lee's office. He's the father of Jaehyuk Lee."

Jiyoung's eyes cooled.

"And he was recently appointed as representative."

"Yes."

Inhyuk lowered his gaze.

"I heard he had complaints about us sponsoring Jiwoo Seo and Asuka Seo for the academy."

A pause.

"But I didn't think he would order a background check like this."

Jiyoung's hand stilled.

"A background check?"

Her voice was calm.

That made it worse.

Inhyuk nodded once.

"That seems to be what they're calling it."

His expression darkened.

"But they entered the Seo residence without permission. They weren't just observing from outside."

Jiyoung said nothing.

"They also used force inside the house."

A beat.

"And kicked the cats."

The room went colder.

Not awakened energy.

Not killing intent.

Something quieter.

Jiyoung's expression did not change much, but the air around her became painfully still.

Inhyuk swallowed.

"They were subdued before they could do anything further."

"By Asuka?"

"And the cats."

Jiyoung blinked once.

Inhyuk's expression became complicated.

"One of them was already knocked out by Casein Nitrate when I arrived."

Jiyoung stared.

"Casein Nitrate."

"Yes."

"The cat."

"Yes."

Another pause.

Jiyoung slowly leaned back.

"And the other?"

"The grey scarred cat fought him."

Silence.

Jiyoung's face remained unreadable.

Inhyuk looked like a man trying very hard not to acknowledge the absurdity of the report he was giving, but was secretly thrilled.

"One of our trained awakeners was being held off by a cat."

Jiyoung closed her eyes briefly.

"I see."

Inhyuk coughed once.

"Then Asuka subdued him."

"How badly?"

"Not badly."

That said quite a lot.

Jiyoung opened her eyes.

"If she wanted to injure them, she could have."

"Yes."

Inhyuk did not hesitate.

"She chose not to."

Jiyoung looked toward the window.

For a moment, she saw Jiwoo's face.

Kind.

Earnest.

Still so new to their world.

Then Asuka.

Quiet.

Strange.

Difficult to read.

A girl who had stood in her office with bandages over her eyes and a calmness that did not belong to someone her age.

Jiyoung's voice lowered.

"Jiwoo was at school?"

"Yes."

"Then Asuka was home alone."

Inhyuk's expression tightened.

"Yes."

The implication did not need to be spoken.

If Asuka had been a normal unaffiliated awakener.

If the cats had not resisted.

If the intruders had gone further.

If Jiwoo had come home in the middle of it.

There were too many unacceptable possibilities.

Jiyoung's eyes darkened slightly.

"Come to think of it…"

Inhyuk straightened.

"It's been a while since I last saw Chairman Lee."

The words were soft.

Almost casual.

But Inhyuk immediately understood.

He lowered his head.

"I'll make arrangements."

Jiyoung nodded.

"And Inhyuk."

"Yes?"

"No noise."

"Understood."

"Chairman Lee should understand exactly what line he crossed."

"Yes."

"And he should understand that Jiwoo Seo and Asuka Seo are under Shinhwa's sponsorship."

Her gaze sharpened.

"Not as tools."

A pause.

"As people we have chosen to protect."

Inhyuk's expression softened for a fraction of a second.

"Yes."

Then he hesitated.

Jiyoung noticed.

"There's something else."

Inhyuk looked up.

"Yes."

He paused, then said carefully, "Asuka wasn't wearing her bandages when I arrived."

Jiyoung's gaze shifted.

Inhyuk continued, "I saw her eyes."

The room became quiet again.

"They're blue," Inhyuk said. "Sky blue. Very distinct."

Jiyoung said nothing.

"But it wasn't just the color."

He frowned slightly, trying to choose the right words.

"They didn't feel ordinary."

Jiyoung's fingers tapped once against the arm of her chair.

"And did anyone else see?"

"The retrieval team did."

Inhyuk lowered his head.

"I'll make sure no one discusses it."

Jiyoung's voice turned firm.

"No written report."

Inhyuk looked up.

Her expression was calm, but absolute.

"Whatever Asuka Seo chooses to hide is not ours to expose."

Inhyuk nodded immediately.

"Yes."

"Especially not after our people entered her home."

A sharper pause.

"And harmed what she cares about."

Inhyuk bowed.

"I'll handle it."

Jiyoung looked toward the city beyond the glass.

Chairman Lee.

The academy.

Jiwoo and Asuka.

Unaffiliated students under Shinhwa sponsorship.

Power struggles had already begun.

How predictable.

How disappointing.

Her voice was quiet when she spoke again.

"Arrange the meeting."

"Yes."

"And Inhyuk."

He stopped at the door.

"Chairman Lee should not misunderstand my silence as permission."

Inhyuk's eyes sharpened.

"Of course."

He left.

The office door closed softly behind him.

Jiyoung remained still.

Calm.

Elegant.

Dangerous.

Then she opened her phone and looked at the academy documents again.

Jiwoo Seo.

Asuka Seo.

Independent sponsorship.

Two names that had already begun disturbing the structure around them.

Jiyoung's expression did not soften.

But something in her gaze did.

"If they are going to enter this world," she murmured, "then at least they won't enter it alone."

At the Seo house, Asuka already knew.

Not because anyone called her.

Not yet.

Her future sight had flickered again while she sat on the couch with her book open in her lap.

Chairman Lee.

Jiyoung entering his office.

Inhyuk lowering his head.

Arrangements being made.

A meeting that would be quiet, sharp, and deeply unpleasant for the man who had sent people to their home.

Handled.

Asuka turned a page.

Good.

Then she stopped thinking about it.

Because dwelling on things she had already delegated was inefficient.

Also annoying.

Kayden sat nearby, watching her.

"You saw something."

"Yes."

"Shinhwa?"

"Yes."

"Handled?"

"Yes."

Kayden stared.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

"You're not going to do anything?"

Asuka looked at him.

"Jiyoung and Inhyuk are doing something."

Kayden narrowed his eyes.

"And if that's not enough?"

Her finger paused against the page.

"It will be."

A pause.

"And if it is not, then I will."

Kayden's tail flicked once.

There it was.

Still calm.

Still lazy.

Still terrifying.

He sighed.

"You're really not good for my recovery."

Asuka tilted her head.

"Because of stress?"

"Because you make me curious."

"That sounds like a you problem."

"It became my problem when I chose you as a disciple."

"You chose Oppa first."

"And then somehow got you too."

Asuka smiled faintly.

"Unfortunate."

"Very."

But he did not sound like he regretted it.

Jiwoo came home later than usual.

Not much.

But enough that Asuka heard his footsteps before he opened the door.

"I'm home!"

The cats immediately reacted.

The tabby ran first.

The black-and-white cat followed with less urgency but more dignity.

The grey scarred cat lifted its head from Asuka's lap, then stood and walked toward the entrance.

Kayden did not move.

He was pretending to be above greetings.

He was not.

Jiwoo stepped inside, smiling as the cats crowded around his feet.

"I missed you too."

He crouched, petting them one by one.

Then he looked up.

"Asuka?"

She was sitting on the couch.

Bandages back over her eyes.

Hair dry now.

Book in hand.

Calm.

Too calm.

Jiwoo's smile faltered slightly.

"Did something happen?"

Kayden opened one eye.

Asuka closed her book.

"Yes."

Jiwoo immediately straightened.

"What?"

She stood.

"I want to tell you before you hear it from someone else."

That made his expression change completely.

The warmth disappeared.

Worry took its place.

"Asuka."

"I'm fine."

His shoulders tensed anyway.

"What happened?"

"Two awakeners entered the house while you were at school."

Silence.

Jiwoo went very still.

The kind of stillness that did not suit him.

Not because it was calm.

Because it was shock.

"They what?"

"They were from Shinhwa," Asuka said. "But not from Jiyoung."

Kayden watched Jiwoo carefully.

"They were sent by someone else inside the organization."

Jiwoo's hands curled.

"They came here?"

"Yes."

"To our house?"

"Yes."

He looked around.

At the cats.

At the living room.

At Asuka.

His eyes widened.

"Were you hurt?"

"No."

His gaze moved over her anyway, searching for anything wrong.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"What about the cats?"

"One was sore."

Jiwoo's face paled.

"Asuka."

"I healed it."

His breath shook slightly.

"They hurt the cats?"

"They kicked them."

The room changed.

Not because Jiwoo released power.

Not exactly.

But his expression shifted.

Softness remained.

But underneath it—

Something harder formed.

For Jiwoo, anger did not come loudly.

It came like quiet pain.

Like disbelief that anyone could be cruel to something that had done nothing wrong.

He looked at the grey scarred cat.

The cat rubbed against his leg.

Jiwoo crouched immediately and touched it gently.

"I'm sorry."

The cat leaned into his hand.

Jiwoo's face tightened.

"I wasn't here."

Asuka walked over.

"Oppa."

"I should've been here."

"No."

"But—"

"No."

Her voice was soft.

But final.

Jiwoo looked up.

Asuka stood in front of him.

"You were at school."

His eyes lowered.

"They entered while you were gone. That is not your fault."

Jiwoo did not answer.

Kayden hopped down from the couch.

"Don't make that face."

Jiwoo looked toward him.

Kayden walked closer.

"The house wasn't unprotected."

Jiwoo looked at Asuka.

Then at Kayden.

Then at the cats.

"I know."

His voice was quiet.

"I know Asuka can handle herself."

A pause.

"And Mr. Kayden was here."

Kayden's ears twitched.

"But I still don't like it."

Asuka nodded.

"That is reasonable."

Jiwoo's hand tightened gently in the grey cat's fur.

"This is our home."

His voice grew softer.

"They shouldn't be able to just come in."

Asuka watched him.

There it was.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

A boundary forming.

Jiwoo had always wanted to protect people.

But now, the awakened world had touched his home.

His cats.

His sister.

Not in an arena.

Not in training.

Here.

Where they ate dinner.

Where the cats slept.

Where Asuka read her strange books.

Where Kayden complained from the couch.

The place that was supposed to be safe.

And that changed something.

Jiwoo looked up.

"Jiyoung and Inhyuk handled it?"

"Yes."

"Inhyuk came?"

"Yes."

"Is he okay?"

Kayden stared.

"You're asking about him?"

Jiwoo blinked.

"He must have been worried."

Kayden turned slowly toward Asuka.

"This is your brother."

"Yes."

"He's impossible."

"Yes."

Asuka's mouth curved faintly.

"Very Oppa."

Jiwoo smiled weakly, but the worry did not leave him.

"Asuka…"

"Yes?"

"You would tell me if you were hurt, right?"

Asuka paused.

Kayden immediately looked at her.

"Asuka."

She looked away.

Jiwoo's expression sharpened.

"Asuka."

"I was not hurt."

"That's not what I asked."

Silence.

Kayden's mouth curved slightly.

Interesting.

Jiwoo was learning.

Asuka finally sighed.

"Yes."

Jiwoo held her gaze even though her eyes were covered.

"Promise?"

Asuka looked at him.

A long moment passed.

Then she nodded.

"I promise."

Jiwoo relaxed slightly.

Only slightly.

"Okay."

Asuka reached out and poked his forehead.

He blinked.

"What was that for?"

"You are worrying too much."

"Of course I am."

"Yes."

"You're my sister."

Asuka paused.

Then her expression softened.

"I know."

Jiwoo looked at her.

"And you're important to me."

"I know."

"The cats are important too."

"I know."

"And Mr. Kayden."

Kayden froze.

Jiwoo looked down at him.

"You too."

Kayden's face went blank.

Absolutely blank.

Asuka's mouth curved.

Kayden stared at Jiwoo.

Then looked away.

"Hmph."

Jiwoo smiled faintly.

"See? Mr. Kayden agrees."

"He does not," Asuka said.

Kayden snapped, "Do not translate for me."

Asuka tilted her head.

"I wasn't."

"You were about to."

"Maybe."

Kayden glared.

The tension loosened a little.

Just enough.

Jiwoo sat on the floor, and the cats gathered around him like they understood he needed them close.

Asuka returned to the couch.

Kayden climbed up beside her.

For a while, no one spoke.

Then Jiwoo looked down at his hands.

"I have to get stronger."

Asuka's finger stilled against her book.

Kayden's eyes opened.

Jiwoo's voice was quiet.

"But not just because of the academy."

He looked toward the window.

"I want to protect this place."

A pause.

"The cats."

Another.

"My friends."

His gaze moved to Asuka.

"You."

Asuka did not immediately answer.

Jiwoo smiled, but it was smaller than usual.

"I know you're strong."

He looked at Kayden.

"And I know Mr. Kayden is strong."

Then back to her.

"But I don't want to always be protected."

His hands curled.

"I want to be someone who can protect too."

Kayden watched him.

There it was again.

That ridiculous, stubborn resolve.

Not born from pride.

Not ambition.

Love.

Always love.

That was what made Jiwoo dangerous.

Not his speed.

Not his potential.

Not even the absurd force control Asuka had given him.

It was this.

His strength had a direction.

A reason.

Asuka looked at her brother for a long moment.

Then said softly, "You do not have to protect us alone."

Jiwoo looked up.

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

He smiled gently.

"But I still want to stand beside you."

Asuka's expression softened.

The words hit somewhere old.

Somewhere bruised.

Somewhere that remembered standing alone too often.

She lowered her gaze.

"Okay."

Kayden looked between them.

Then sighed.

"Fine."

Jiwoo blinked.

"What?"

Kayden stood, tail flicking.

"Training starts after dinner."

Jiwoo's eyes widened.

"Really?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"And don't look happy. It's going to be hell."

Jiwoo smiled anyway.

"Okay!"

Kayden groaned.

"That face again."

Asuka opened her book.

"Oppa likes training."

"He likes suffering."

"He likes improving."

"Same thing."

Jiwoo laughed softly.

And just like that, the house became warm again.

Not because the danger was gone.

It wasn't.

Not because the awakened world had stopped reaching for them.

It hadn't.

But because they were all still there.

Jiwoo on the floor with cats in his lap.

Asuka on the couch with her book.

Kayden pretending not to care.

The grey scarred cat curled safely beside them.

Their home had been touched by danger.

But it had not been taken.

And Jiwoo, gentle as he was, had decided something quietly.

The next time the awakened world came too close—

He would be ready.
