It took an entire cold winter to carve out an underground tunnel network from the frozen ground, which was as hard as iron.
Taken by surprise, the High Elves, overwhelmingly superior in weapons, military equipment, and supplies, were suddenly forced into a retreat.

"Kill these damned Elves!"
For a time, even the Dwarf children, shivering in baskets hung mid-air, seemed inspired by the bravely determined figures of their elders. They shouted loudly—spit flying everywhere—and even started grabbing bricks of Dragon Food, meant for the journey, from their baskets to hurl at the Moon Elf lines. This incited Mofei, who was still hungry, to roar on the spot:
"A bunch of wastrels! That's my food! Whoever dares to throw my Dragon Food again, I'll throw them down!"
The young Dwarves in the baskets then ducked their heads and quieted down a bit.
