Chapter 9 - Not the YOU I know…

(Ally's POV)

After speaking up for Zack, I just stood there frozen till everyone left. I couldn't believe that I had taken those actions. "What am I supposed to give as an excuse for doing this? Would he think that I like him or something? I hope he doesn't misunderstand" I kept thinking of what could possibly happen if I turned back to face him. Suddenly I heard him stand up. Because I didn't want to hear what he would say I just blurted out anything that came to mind and ran away. It felt so awkward and embarrassing. I just couldn't face him. I wondered how things would turn out after what I just did. What would people say. I really didn't want any sort of attention from people. I wouldn't even know what I would say if people started questioning me. No one even knew I existed except some random guys that would tell me "Hi" once in a while. I was so immersed in my thoughts that I didn't notice my mom was calling for me. I snapped back to reality and my mom looked really worried. It was always hard to communicate to my mom, but she understood me even though my words didn't make any sense. That's what I love about her. My dad on the other hand tries his best but, in the end, my mom has to explain what I try to tell him. I just end up stammering most times or get misunderstood by people when I open my mouth. Chloe tries her best with me and I'm grateful to her for being an understanding friend. She tries to help me out most of the time and because we've gotten quite close, I don't stammer when I speak to her. There's just this warmth I feel when we're together. It makes things easier for me.

The next day at school. I walked into class with my eyes looking to the ground and I went straight to my seat. Immediately I sat down, Chloe rushed towards me and looked very excited. "Ally!! I heard what happened yesterday. I couldn't believe what people were saying so I wanted to hear it directly from you. Did you really yell at the girls because they were bothering Zack?". I could see the anticipation in her eyes as she said these words. I couldn't deny what had happened do I told her that I did it. "Ally, I'm really surprised, that's not the YOU I know. What got into you? I'm more surprised at the fact that you could speak like that to all those girls. Or was it something you did on impulse?" Chloe was really interested in yesterday's event, and I still hadn't gotten rid of the tension I had been feeling since yesterday. I couldn't even sleep well last night. "Chloe, just forget about it. It's in the past. It's something I did on impulse. It just looked like he didn't want to be bothered, but none of the girls could see that so I acted without knowing" I explained in the best way I could, and I didn't say anything after that.

But something surprising happened after my conversation with Chloe ended. One of the girls walked up to Zack, "On behalf of the girls, I would like to apologize. We're sorry if we made you uncomfortable. We were just surprised that you could be both handsome and very intelligent. Would you forgive us?" She said these words while trying to use her girly charms to gain sympathy from him. I felt a bit disgusted. But what surprised me was Zack's actions. He didn't even spare a glance in the girl's direction. His face was expressionless, and He didn't say a word. All he did was look at the people waiting for his answer, and he proceeded to place his head on his desk. The girl felt so embarrassed, and she went away looking like she had been rejected by her crush. Deep down I felt so happy, and I continued staring at Zack. As I stared. He raised his head and looked in my direction and caught me for the third time staring at him. This time around I didn't turn my head away. Instead, I smiled and said "Hi". He smiled back and placed his head back on his desk. "Did he just smile at me?". My cheeks got all flushed and I could feel butterflies in my stomach. His smile was so beautiful on his handsome face.

Because of his smile, my mood for the rest of the day was perfect. I spent my lunch listening to Chloe talk as usual and I would respond with one or two words like I always do. Chloe was still a bit suspicious about my actions yesterday, but I could blame her. She had known me for a while now and she knew the kind of personality I had. I wanted to clear her suspicions, so I told her something that shocked her. "Actually, the truth is that I have a crush on Zack. I think I've liked him since the first day I saw him. Most times during classes, I find myself staring at him without even knowing. So, when I saw those girls bothering him with lustful eyes, I couldn't take it. That's why I did what I did" She had a shocked expression on her face. "Are you serious? You actually have a crush on Mr. don't bother me? You've got to be kidding right?" I couldn't help but laugh at her words "When did he get such a name?" I asked. She told me that after what happened this morning. No one wanted to approach him anymore except Mike who's the only person that talks to him. She said that his expression really made people feel uncomfortable and they all decided to bother him and gave him that name. I just continued laughing because I found it hilarious that people thought of him that way. In my eyes he was perfect. "Did you know that the girls have a crush on him too, that's why they acted that way. Because he always acts so distant, they could never approach him. Honestly, I would be lying if I said he wasn't handsome. But that's not enough reason for me to like him. His personality is just awful so He's off my list" Who would have thought that all the girls had their eyes on him. Well, now that I knew, would it really change anything. It's not like I can walk up to him to talk to him anyway. It was nice knowing how Chloe really felt about him. That means there was one less girl to fight over him with me. I really wanted to get to know him and understand why he acts the way he does. I just feel deeply attached to him and I really don't know why.
