He fully understood why Lecturer Black screamed—if he were racking his brains, thinking of various sweet nothings to woo a witch, and then that witch suddenly 'shrunk' into a little kid, he'd be startled too.
Moreover, this 'little kid' didn't shrink proportionately.
If the witch had just shrunk entirely, like mistakenly taking a 'shrink potion' or being hit by a 'shrinking spell,' shrinking physically without aging, Lecturer Black might not have been shocked. He might even have laughed, or become even more eager to help with dispelling or recovery potion.
Unfortunately, the witch's shrinking in the classroom was 'nonlinear'—like a frog turning into a tadpole, a butterfly into a caterpillar, a swan into an ugly duckling.
