Chapter 22 - NO MORE SHADOWS

The air between them didn't cool.

It thickened.

Ryan didn't close the distance completely.

But he didn't step back either.

"You wanted equality," he said quietly.

"I demanded it."

A faint, dangerous smile touched his lips.

"And you got it."

Jenny searched his eyes carefully.

No humiliation.

No wounded ego.

Just something shifting.

"You're not furious?" she asked softly.

"I was," he admitted. "For about thirty seconds."

"And now?"

"Now I'm impressed."

That wasn't what she expected.

"You walked onto my stage," he continued, "revealed yourself in front of the board, the media, our families… and didn't flinch."

"I was terrified."

"You didn't look it."

"I learned how not to."

That answer stayed between them.

He studied her — not as someone fragile.

But as someone forged.

"You built RYUGA from scratch," he said slowly. "You negotiated behind my back. You acquired shares without a whisper."

"Yes."

"And you still stood beside me when the cameras exploded."

She held his gaze.

"I never planned to leave your side."

That changed the tone completely.

Ryan's hand moved from her waist — not gripping — just resting there.

Grounded.

"You didn't expose me to destroy me," he said.

"No."

"You exposed me to stand beside me."

"Yes."

His breathing steadied.

"You could have crushed me tonight."

"I don't want to crush you."

"Why?"

Her answer was immediate.

"Because I want to build with you."

The silence that followed wasn't heavy anymore.

It was charged.

"You scare the industry," he murmured.

"I learned from the best."

A low breath left him — almost a laugh.

"You're not my weakness," he corrected quietly.

She raised a brow.

"You're my equal."

That word landed deeper than any confession.

Outside, phones kept buzzing.

Stock prices were probably shifting.

Headlines forming.

But inside that room, something far more important was happening.

Ryan stepped back slightly — just enough to look at her fully.

"No more secrets," he said.

"No more underestimating."

"No more tests."

She hesitated at that one.

He noticed.

"You don't need to test whether I'll stay," he added.

"And you don't need to shield me from your battles."

Jenny exhaled slowly.

"I don't know how to stop fighting alone."

"Then don't."

His voice softened.

"Fight with me."

The words weren't romantic.

They were stronger than that.

Partnership.

She searched his face for ego.

Found none.

"What happens now?" she asked quietly.

He glanced toward the locked door.

"Now," he said calmly, "we walk back out there together."

"The media will tear us apart."

"Let them try."

"Our competitors will attack."

"I hope they do."

Her lips curved slightly.

"You enjoy war."

"I enjoy winning."

He stepped closer again — not to dominate.

To align.

"You built an empire in the shadows," he said.

"Then let's rule in the light."

Her heart skipped.

"You're not threatened?"

"I don't want a woman behind me," he replied steadily. "I want one who can stand in front if I fall."

That did it.

That was the shift she had waited for.

Not apology.

Not regret.

Recognition.

Jenny reached for his hand this time.

Not because she was shaken.

Because she chose to.

His fingers laced with hers instantly.

Strong.

Certain.

"Ready?" he asked.

"For the headlines?"

"For the future."

She held his gaze.

"Always."

He unlocked the door.

The noise from the ballroom surged back in like a tidal wave.

Cameras turned immediately.

Reporters gasped.

Board members whispered.

But this time—

He didn't pull her forward.

And she didn't walk behind.

They stepped out side by side.

Equal.

Unshaken.

Unbreakable.

And for the first time, the world wasn't watching a scandal.

It was watching a power couple being born.
