Gibson was on point.
With the current state of the Space Marines, Pelle—the Bug Prince of War—was truly not a problem. His existence did not pose even the slightest bit of threat to the frontlines.
Sure, the swarm he led looked scary and unstoppable, but everything was under control. The barriers he made were deceptively strong and sturdy; even though they looked like they'd break, they wouldn't. It's designed that way so that their enemies underestimate them.
And even if the first barrier were to be broken, it's alright. Gibson already left contingencies in place. Remember, not all the space marines deployed were actually real people; some of them were puppets. The majority of the real ones are kept deeper in the base; it's them who have the real big guns and heavy firepower.
Plus, there were thousands of traps buried in the frontier, just waiting for the right idiots to trigger them.
