Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: The Road Through the Wild

The heavy, iron-plated door of the transit carriage slammed shut with a definitive, mechanical click, sealing Lysander and me inside a dim, leather-padded compartment insulated from the outside world. Outside, a sharp command echoed through the dusk air, followed by the deep, resonant crack of a whip. The massive transport lurched forward, its heavily reinforced wheels rolling smoothly over the ancient stone pathway as we began our journey toward the central capital sector.

For the first ten kilometres, the only sound inside the compartment was the rhythmic, low rumble of the wheels and Lysander's erratic, heavy breathing. My childhood friend sat directly opposite me, staring blindly out the small, reinforced glass window as the flickering torches of the regional outpost's outer walls slowly faded into the pitch-black canopy of the frontier woods. His right hand was buried deep in his coat pocket, his fingers frantically clinking a small handful of Silver and Bronze coins he had been issued as an initial registration stipend for clearing the awakening minimums.

"Astraeus," Lysander finally whispered, his voice cracking slightly as he turned his head away from the window. "I still don't think it's real. My endurance... my durability... the world law actually granted me a Silver-tier talent. Vane's administrative clerks told me a Fourth Echelon aptitude from an outer rim village is an absolute rarity. They're actually paying for us to sit in an elite transport."

"It's real, Lysander," I replied smoothly, keeping my tone perfectly level to anchor his anxiety. "You unsealed exactly what your body was built for. Your baseline attributes are yours now."

As I spoke, a sudden, blinding spike of white-hot agony tore straight out from my sternum, causing the muscles in my thighs to instinctively lock up. I kept my face entirely expressionless, forcing my breathing to remain slow and rhythmic, but beneath my woollen cloak, my fists were clenched so tightly my fingernails were piercing my raw palms.

The five-day forge of my physical Mana Core had officially begun its work.

While Lysander was riding the high of his Fourth Echelon awakening, my internal anatomy was actively tearing itself apart to reconstruct a vehicle capable of hosting an EX-Rank core. The dense, raw current of my unranked Cosmic force was acting like an absolute gravitational press inside my limbs. My unsealed veins were physically growing and expanding, splitting my unconditioned flesh micrometre by micrometre to carve out the massive, thick conduit pathways required to host a flat twenty-five strength and agility matrix. The burning heat wrapped tightly around my collarbone and down my spine, systematically altering my bone density and anchoring my tendons for the explosive physical leverage of a cosmic swordsman. It was a silent, agonizing physical evolution that would not stop for the next one hundred and twenty hours.

"But what about you?" Lysander asked, leaning forward, his brow furrowing with genuine, protective worry. "Everyone in the cathedral hall saw that Fifth Echelon Gold-Grade block flash on the public board before the monolith glitched out, but the rumors were crazy. They said your core's internal pressure nearly shattered the base pedestal. Are you feeling okay? Did the unsealing process do something weird to your channels?"

I looked at his honest, unscarred face, a cold wave of private calculations turning over silently behind my eyes. I couldn't tell him the truth. I couldn't tell him that the public Gold-Grade readout was a fake cover profile generated by an ancient world law that couldn't comprehend my soul. I couldn't tell him that my true affinity was Cosmic, or that my wisdom attribute was an absurd thirty. If anyone discovered I was walking into the capital sector with an unprecedented EX-Rank secret, the Sovereign noble houses would run shadow operations to kidnap me and harvest my core before the week ended.

"The unsealing crystal suffered an erratic pulse because my core's initial compression was too irregular," I lied cleanly, forcing my voice to remain completely steady despite the burning current scraping against my shoulders. "Director Vane cleared the record error manually. The world interface finalized my physical capabilities into a standard light sword resonance baseline. I'm perfectly fine, Lysander."

Lysander let out a massive, visible sigh of relief, slumping back into the leather cushions. "Thank the gods. When the board glitched, I thought the nobles were going to hijack your file and throw you straight into one of those vanguard grunt camps to die as an uneducated shield on the frontlines. If we got split up..." He shook his head, a fierce, determined fire igniting in his young eyes. "We're going to the Imperial Institute of the Defiant Valley, Astraeus. Together. I don't care how arrogant those noble heirs in the capital sector are. With my physical durability and your blade speed, we'll clear the training rifts before the first semester even ends."

"We will," I muttered quietly, turning my gaze toward the dark window.

Outside, the carriage was passing the final human perimeter wall, the heavy iron fences disappearing behind us as we entered the dangerous, unaligned wilderness that made up seventy percent of the land. Deep in the black woods, the automated global interface flashed a sudden, distant notification across my retinas as my eyes focused on a pair of glowing red eyes moving through the underbrush.

[Frontier Stalker]

Level: 3

Echelon: First

HP: 220 / 220

I watched the standard, minimalist text lines fade back into the dark foliage as the carriage surged forward into the night. My childhood friend was celebrating a lucky escape from a commoner's fate, completely unaware that we weren't just heading to a school for elite warriors. We were marching straight into a den of vipers. The noble families who had butchered Lysander and harvested my core across ten years of my past life were waiting for us inside those central sector gates—but this time, I wasn't arriving as their uneducated meat shield. I was a swordsman with an impossible secret, my unsealed veins were expanding by the second, and the countdown to their destruction had officially begun.
