Chapter 79 - XWC : THE CORE OF VEYRUUN

With the grandmasters' interference buying them a narrow window, Ryker, Kai, Meili and the transformed Kaede surged straight for Veyruun's core. The massive obsidian sphere pulsed, its surface a lattice of black stone and swirling, dark energy. Kaede, muscles swollen like a charging beast, slammed her massive fists into the core's outer shell. Each impact sent shockwaves through the ground, but the stone held firm, barely yielding under her gorilla‑strength blows.

"Come on, break!" Kaede growled, her voice reverberating with raw power as she hammered again and again. The core's surface cracked in tiny hairline fractures, but it remained stubbornly intact—its ancient seal refusing to shatter under brute force alone.

Meili stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she recalled the fleeting contact she'd made earlier with Hibiki's presence inside the entity. She placed a steady hand on the core's surface, feeling the faint, warm pulse of Hibiki's chi hidden deep within the darkness. "I can feel him," she whispered, her tone a mix of awe and determination. "He's still there, trapped in the heart of this thing."

Kai and Ryker stood at her sides, breathing hard but holding their ground. "We need a way to reach him without smashing the whole thing," Kai said, eyes scanning for any weakness. Ryker nodded, his mind already racing through possible techniques. "If we can't break it from the outside, maybe we can coax it open from within—using Hibiki's own energy."

The others gasped, and Kaede turned to Ryker, her expression skeptical. "I get what you're saying, but we'll need one heck of a spiritual Bujutsu user—sort of a Kuoshu clan member. But right now, I don't think we got that in our company."

Ryker nodded, a hint of a plan forming in his mind. "The Kuoshu clan's abilities are unique—their mastery of life energy lets them manipulate chi in ways that can heal, defend, and even influence minds. If we can tap into Hibiki's energy from within, a Kuoshu practitioner might be able to guide it outward and unravel the seal."

Before, I was thinking—"

Meili interrupted, her voice firm. "I can do it!" she said, her voice firm.

Everyone turned to her, surprised. "I'm a descendant of the Kuoshu clan as well," Meili continued, "and I'm the one who noticed his presence. I think I'm capable of pulling off your plan, Sifu Ryker."

Kaede looked unconvinced, her brow furrowed in doubt. Ryker, on the other hand, was taken aback, clearly surprised by Meili's revelation. "A Kuoshu descendant?" he echoed, his mind racing with the implications. "Then maybe… just maybe, you can do it."

Meili nodded, her eyes locked on Veyruun's core. "I'll try to reach Hibiki's chi and coax him out. But I'll need you guys to cover me."

Meili took a deep breath, her eyes locking onto Veyruun's core as she centered herself. "I'll need to be patient," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the din of the battle raging around them. Kai, Kaede, and Ryker nodded, forming a tight circle around her as they prepared to shield her from any distractions.

With her focus sharpened, Meili began to channel the Kuoshu techniques she'd learned from her clan. Her posture shifted subtly, her breathing slowing as she reached out with her mind, seeking the thread of Hibiki's chi she'd sensed earlier.

Ryker watched intently, his own chi attuning to Meili's as he prepared to support her effort. "She's got the touch," he murmured to Kaede, his voice low. "If anyone can coax Hibiki out, it's her."

Kaede grunted, still looking uncertain but willing to trust Meili's judgment. "Just hurry it up," she growled, her eyes darting to the battle outside their small circle. Veyruun's thrashing was growing more violent, the grandmasters struggling to keep it contained.

Meili's hands began to glow with a soft, blue light as she made contact with Hibiki's trapped energy. The core pulsed in response, its dark rhythms intertwining with Meili's gentle prodding. "He's… he's fighting," Meili whispered, her voice strained. "I can feel him trying to break free."

Suddenly, the core flared, and a burst of dark energy shot outward, forcing Kaede and Ryker to throw up defensive barriers. Meili stumbled, her connection to Hibiki's chi faltering.

"Meili!" Ryker called, reaching out to steady her.

Meili's eyes snapped open, determination burning within them. "I'm okay," she said, her voice tight. "It just means we need to push harder."

As Meili prepared to make another attempt, Kai's gaze lingered on Veyruun, his eyes narrowing beneath his mask. He glanced back at Meili, a mix of concern and calculation etched on his face. Something wasn't adding up, and he wasn't sure if Meili's plan would work—or if it would get her killed.

Meili, oblivious to Kai's doubts, took a deep breath and plunged back into the attempt. This time, her connection to Hibiki's chi deepened, the core's pulse synchronizing with her own heartbeat. The air around her seemed to thicken, the shadows twisting as she drew on the Kuoshu techniques.

Just as it seemed she'd break through, a searing ray of light burst from the core, enveloping Meili, Kai, Ryker, and Kaede in its brilliance. The flash was blinding, and even the grandmasters' paralyzing hold on Veyruun couldn't prepare them for the sudden explosion of energy.

The light vanished as quickly as it appeared, leaving the battlefield in stunned silence. The core still pulsed, intact but somehow… different. Meili and Kai were gone.

Ryker stumbled back, his eyes scanning the area fr wildly. "Meili! Kai!" he called, his voice hoarse. Kaede, still in her gorilla form, let out a distressed roar, her massive frame trembling with confusion.

Grandmaster Fei's eyes snapped open, his hold on Veyruun faltering for a split second. "What just happened?" he demanded, his gaze darting between the core and the empty space where Meili and Kai had stood.

Zabuza's voice cut through the chaos, his tone grim. "Looks like Xaphan had one last trick up its sleeve... Be on alert everyone, more enemies have arrived."

Zabuza's voice cut through the chaos, his tone grim. "Looks like Xaphan had one last trick up its sleeve... Be on alert, everyone, more enemies have arrived."

A dark, opaque vapor suddenly appeared in the centre of the battlefield, right in front of Veyruun. Everyone grew nervous, anticipating what might emerge. The mist swirled, and a figure coalesced into view—Zirkyu, Xaphan's ruthless right-hand man. He stood tall, a cold smile spreading across his face as he surveyed the scene.

But it wasn't just Zirkyu who emerged from the shadows. Next to him stood Lian, her expression idle. And in front of them, bound and gagged, were Master Ansen and Sifu Mei's squad—captured, their eyes flashing with defiance.

Zirkyu's smile widened as he addressed the group. "Looks like you've managed to inconvenience Xaphan… for the last time."

Ryker's fists clenched at his sides. "You guys… what have you done?" he growled, his voice low and menacing.

Grandmaster Jiang stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "Zirkyu. I should've known you'd be involved in this mess. It was just a question of when you'd show your face." He raised a hand, moisture beginning to gather in the air as he prepared to strike.

Zirkyu chuckled, the sound devoid of humor. "Save it, Old hag. You can't stop what's coming. Xaphan's plan is in motion—and nothing can halt it now. You all... Get ready to die."

Zirkyu sneered, his gaze raking over the group. "Xaphan's patience has run out. You've served your purpose, and now… you'll all be silenced."

Lian, standing idle beside him, finally spoke, her voice detached. "The bindings holding them are laced with shadow chi. The more they struggle, the tighter they'll be trapped."

Grandmaster Yagushi's gaze lingered on Lian, a mix of concern and accusation in his eyes. "Shadow chi?... Lian, why are you—"

"She's not herself," Grandmaster Fei interrupted, his voice low and urgent as he locked eyes with Yagushi. "They must have done something to her—a mind trap, maybe."

Zirkyu's laughter cut through the tension, sending a shiver down the spines of the onlookers. "Far? This is just the beginning. Xaphan will reshape this world… and you'll all be dust."

Kaede, still in gorilla form, took a menacing step forward, her massive frame coiled and ready to spring. "Not if we trash him first."

Zabuza's voice was ice-cold, his eyes locked on Zirkyu. "Everyone, on my signal." The group shifted into position, their chi rising as they prepared to unleash hell. The arrival of Zirkyu, Lian, and the captives had just raised the stakes—this was about to get brutal.

Lian's expression shifted, a flicker of urgency crossing her detached mask. "Hey, they escaped," she said, interrupting Zirkyu's monologue.

Zirkyu's smile faltered for a split second. "What?" he snapped.

Lian's voice remained detached, but a hint of calculation crept into her tone. "The domain your other half made was taken out, and the other squad escaped—unfortunately, so."

The grandmasters, Zabuza, and the others held their line, watching the exchange with intense interest as Zirkyu and Lian continued conversing.

Zirkyu's brow furrowed. "Is that even possible?"

Lian shrugged. "I couldn't have predicted they'd be capable of that. But supposedly… I should've expected the impossible to happen mid-war. But anyways… they're here."

Rhett stepped forward, standing bold alongside Master Ansen, Elia, Nix, and Levi. The other Lian, unharmed, stood with them, leaning on Levi's shoulder. "How about we join the party?" Rhett said with a smirk. "Any room for 4 more incredible members?"

Zirkyu scoffed, a cold hmph escaping his lips. "Hmph."

Grandmaster Fei's face lit up with pride. "Glad you're safe," he said, his eyes on the newly arrived squad.

Elia's eyes widened as she took in the scene—Veyruun, massive and terrifying, was held in check by Grandmaster Fei's paralyzing Bujutsu. The realization dawned on her and her squad: the tide had shifted. Most of Xaphan's key warlords were out of commission—Vorgath was gone, Kreal was crushed, Lyra was captured… and now Veyruun itself was neutralized.

Zirkyu's expression morphed into a twisted grin as he turned to Lian. "I think it's time our master graced us with his presence, right?"

Lian's detached mask slipped for a moment, a flicker of… unease?—before she regained control. "As you say."

As Zirkyu spoke, Ryker and Kaede sprang into action, rushing to free Sifu Mei's squad from the shadow-chi binds. The air crackled with tension.

Lian's eyes glazed over, her voice echoing in Zirkyu's mind, "He's coming." Zirkyu and Lian dropped to their knees in unison, foreheads touching the ground.

The sky split. A black tear appeared above Veyruun, its edges curling like charred paper. Warriors stumbled as their chi was sucked upward, drawn into the void.

Ryker cursed under his breath, "What the—", his voice lost in the growing din. Kaede growled low in her throat, baring her teeth. Kaguya's eyes narrowed, her hands shaking. Grandmaster Jiang and Yagushi exchanged a grim glance, their faces set.

AHH!!

Grandmaster Fei's face contorted in strain—Veyruun, still paralyzed, began to roar. _RRRRAAARRR_! The sound was primal, like the beast was trying to shatter its confines. Fei's eyes began to bleed, capillaries bursting from the pressure. His grip on Veyruun's trance wanked, the beast's rage threatening to break free.

A whisper cut through every mind: "So this… is the generation that dares challenge me?"

Xaphan emerged on Veyruun's back, his form coalescing like smoke turned flesh. Ancient chi runes etched into his skin pulsed with dark energy. He descended slowly, the air warping around him.

Veyruun's roars grew frantic. The grandmasters and warriors panicked—Xaphan landed beside the beast, his presence crushing.

Without looking at Veyruun, he raised two fingers. "Quiet."

The beast fell silent. The stillness was oppressive, heavy with threat.

Xaphan turned to Zirkyu and Lian. "Your master submitted to me, both his will and body," he said, his voice low and pleased. "I'm grateful to you both."

He turned to the grandmasters, Grandmaster Fei, still struggling, and smiled. "So many warriors. So much chi. How convenient."

His gaze lingered. "You've all fought bravely. Unfortunately… none of it mattered."

Xaphan's smile widened. "Now then… shall we begin the real war?"
