...
The Parisian crowd roared as the opening video package played on the TitanTron, highlighting the bitter, violent rivalries that had built the foundation for the pay per view. The stakes were astronomical. The God King's grip on the WWE landscape was absolute, but the shadows were rapidly closing in, and the relentless machine of the wrestling industry was ready to test exactly how strong his empire truly was.
The opening video package faded from the TitanTron, and the Accor Arena in Paris immediately exploded with the sharp, militant snare drum beat of We Are One.
"What an unbelievable way to kick off Night of Champions!" Michael Cole shouted as the heavy bassline dropped. "We are starting right at the top of the mid card with the Intercontinental Championship on the line!"
Wade Barrett stepped out from the curtain, looking every bit the arrogant British brawler he was known to be. The prestigious Intercontinental Championship was strapped tightly around his waist. But he was not alone. Marching behind him in perfect unison were the core members of The Nexus, all wearing their trademark black and yellow armbands. Leading the pack behind Barrett were the WWE Tag Team Champions, Ryback and David Otunga, their twin copper championships resting on their broad shoulders.
"Look at the sheer numbers advantage for Wade Barrett," Jerry Lawler noted nervously. "The Nexus is a well-oiled machine. They operate like a pack of wolves, and they are out here to make sure that title doesn't go anywhere."
"It's called smart business, King!" JBL praised loudly. "Wade Barrett built an army! Why fight fair when you can guarantee a victory? That Intercontinental Championship is staying exactly where it belongs!"
The Nexus surrounded the ring like a heavily armed perimeter as Barrett slid under the bottom rope, unstrapping the title and holding it high.
"BOOYAKA BOOYAKA!"
The sudden, energetic burst of Rey Mysterio's theme music sent the Parisian crowd into an absolute frenzy. The legendary luchador burst through the curtain, shooting high into the air from a hidden stage elevator, wearing a vibrant, custom French themed mask and ring gear. He slapped high fives with the fans down the ramp, though his eyes remained locked warily on the wall of Nexus members surrounding the ring.
"Rey Mysterio is the ultimate underdog," Booker T added. "He has fought giants his entire career, but fighting Wade Barrett with the entire Nexus ringside is a completely different level of danger."
Mysterio slid into the ring, immediately retreating to a neutral corner. The referee took the Intercontinental Championship from Barrett, raising it high for the crowd to see. Before calling for the bell, the official walked directly to the ropes, pointing a firm finger down at Ryback, Otunga, and the rest of the faction.
"I see any of you get involved, you're out of here! Understand?!" the referee warned aggressively.
The Nexus members backed away slightly, raising their hands in mock innocence. The referee nodded, moving back to the center of the ring.
DING! DING! DING!
The bell rang, and Barrett immediately sought to use his massive size advantage, charging forward with a heavy clothesline. Mysterio ducked it effortlessly, utilizing his elite speed. He bounced off the ropes, sliding between Barrett's legs, and delivered a sharp dropkick to the back of the champion's knee, dropping Barrett to the mat.
"Mysterio is setting a blistering pace early!" Cole noted as Rey followed up with a springboard seated senton that earned a quick one-count.
Barrett powered out of the pin, throwing Mysterio off him. As Rey hit the ropes again, Barrett caught him out of mid air, spinning him into a devastating tilt a whirl backbreaker. The impact knocked the wind completely out of the challenger.
For the next five minutes, Barrett slowed the match down to an agonizing crawl. He grounded the high flyer with heavy, methodical strikes and suffocating submission holds. Barrett locked in a grounded surfboard stretch, driving his knee into Rey's spine, grinning arrogantly down at the struggling luchador.
"This is exactly what Barrett needs to do," JBL analyzed. "Cut off the ring. Ground the high flyer. Make him fight your fight."
Mysterio, feeding off the chanting Paris crowd, refused to quit. He fought out of the hold, delivering sharp elbows to Barrett's ribs. Rey hit the ropes, looking for a headscissors takedown, but Barrett caught him again. This time, Rey shifted his weight in mid air, countering into a beautiful spinning DDT that spiked the champion headfirst into the canvas!
The arena erupted as both men scrambled to their feet.
Rey built momentum, delivering rapid fire kicks to Barrett's legs. He Irish whipped Barrett, looking to set him up for the 619. As Barrett stumbled into the ropes, the Nexus members on the outside immediately closed in, looking to provide interference.
The referee saw the movement immediately.
He stopped his count, marched over to the ropes, and aggressively waved his arms, pointing straight up the entrance ramp.
"You're out of here! All of you! Get out!" the official screamed.
The crowd popped massively as the referee ejected the entire faction!
Ryback looked ready to jump into the ring and tear the official apart, but Barrett waved him off from the mat, knowing a disqualification would cost him the match. The Nexus slowly, angrily retreated up the ramp.
"The referee just leveled the playing field!" Lawler cheered happily. "It is strictly one on one now!"
With the ringside area clear, Mysterio capitalized. He set Barrett up on the middle rope, dialing it up. The crowd roared as Rey hit the ropes and delivered a flawless 619 directly to Barrett's face!
Barrett stumbled backward into the center of the ring. Rey climbed to the top turnbuckle, looking to hit the diving splash to secure the championship.
Rey launched himself into the air.
But Barrett recovered with terrifying speed. As Rey descended, Barrett swung his arm with maximum, devastating velocity, catching Mysterio completely out of thin air with the Bull Hammer elbow strike!
The sickening crack echoed through the Accor Arena. Rey crumpled to the mat, completely unconscious.
Barrett hooked the leg, an arrogant smirk on his face.
"ONE!"
"TWO!"
"THREE!"
"He caught him!" Cole yelled in absolute shock. "Wade Barrett just knocked Rey Mysterio out of the sky! The Intercontinental Championship stays with The Nexus!"
"That is why he is the champion, Michael!" JBL boasted as Barrett had his hand raised. "He doesn't need The Nexus to win! He just needs one shot, and he delivers!"
The broadcast transitioned rapidly, keeping the energy high as the focus shifted to the World Tag Team Championships.
The arena lights dimmed, and the haunting acoustic strum of Live in Fear filled the stadium. The sea of cell phone fireflies illuminated the Zénith as Bray Wyatt led Luke Harper and Erick Rowan down the steel ramp. The monsters wore their grimy sheep masks, carrying the heavy twin gold titles over their thick shoulders, while Bray carried the glowing oil lantern.
Noticeably absent from Bray's hand was the terrifying, parasitic Mandible Claw glove he had debuted on RAW. He was saving that specifically for the God King.
"The Wyatt Family has been an unstoppable force since they debuted," Cole noted quietly as the trio entered the ring. "But tonight, they face a team that brings a completely different kind of energy."
"AWWWWW PARIS! DON'T YOU DARE BE SOUR!"
The upbeat, gospel infused theme music of The New Day blasted through the speakers, immediately injecting a massive dose of positivity into the tense arena. Xavier Woods, Big E, and Kofi Kingston skipped down the ramp, wearing matching bright blue and pink gear, tossing pancakes into the crowd and playing the trombone.
"The New Day is not intimidated!" Booker T laughed, highly amused by the contrast in styles. "They know exactly how dangerous the Wyatts are, but they aren't going to let that change who they are!"
Harper and Rowan handed their titles to the referee, pulling off their masks and locking their wild, unblinking eyes on their challengers. Woods and Big E stepped up as the legal men, while Kofi and Bray remained on the outside of their respective corners.
DING! DING! DING!
The match was an absolute clinic in tag team psychology. The New Day utilized their quick tags and high flying tandem offense to keep the larger monsters off balance. Woods delivered a beautiful sliding dropkick to Harper's knee, followed by an immediate tag to Big E, who launched his massive frame into a running splash across Harper's chest for a quick two count.
"Look at the agility of Big E!" Lawler praised. "He is matching the power of the Wyatts, but he moves so much faster!"
The momentum shifted when Rowan tagged in, catching Woods completely off guard with a brutal spinning heel kick that nearly took Woods' head off. The Wyatts isolated Woods in their corner, systematically dismantling him with heavy, bare knuckle strikes and suffocating submission holds.
Bray Wyatt stood on the outside, rocking slowly back and forth in a custom rocking chair, watching his monsters work with a wide, unsettling smile.
"The isolation strategy is flawless," JBL analyzed. "Keep Big E and Kofi out of the ring, and eventually, Woods is going to break."
After ten grueling minutes of absorbing punishment, Woods finally found a desperate burst of adrenaline. He ducked a massive clothesline from Harper and hit a desperation enzuigiri that connected flush with the back of Harper's head. Both men collapsed to the mat.
The Paris crowd clapped in unison, rallying behind Woods as he crawled desperately toward his corner.
Woods made the hot tag! Big E exploded into the ring, hitting Rowan with three massive belly to belly suplexes, shaking the ring with every impact. He hit the ropes, delivering a catastrophic running splash that earned a very close two count before Harper broke the pin.
The match broke down into absolute chaos, a fast paced, high impact tornado of bodies.
Kofi Kingston, trying to neutralize the numbers game, launched himself off the steel steps, taking out Rowan on the outside floor with a beautiful flying crossbody.
Inside the ring, Big E hoisted Harper onto his shoulder, yelling for Woods to climb the turnbuckle for the Midnight Hour.
But Harper fought out with wild, frantic elbows, slipping down the back of the powerhouse. Harper shoved Big E hard, sending him crashing shoulder first into the steel ring post. Woods, perched on the top rope, leaped off, looking for a diving crossbody.
Harper simply stepped forward, swinging his massive arm with terrifying velocity.
CRACK!
Harper caught Woods entirely out of thin air with a devastating, high impact Discus Clothesline!
The sheer force of the blow flipped Woods completely upside down before he crashed into the mat.
Harper hooked the leg.
"ONE!"
"TWO!"
"THREE!"
"He took his head off!" Cole shrieked as the bell rang. "Luke Harper just decapitated Xavier Woods! The Wyatt Family retains the World Tag Team Championships in an absolute war!"
"They are unstoppable, Michael!" JBL cheered loudly. "The New Day gave it everything they had, but you cannot out muscle the monsters of the Wyatt Family!"
Bray Wyatt stood up from his rocking chair, clapping slowly, a look of immense pride on his face as Harper and Rowan raised their titles high into the Parisian night.
The broadcast did not slow down. The atmosphere inside the Accor Arena grew incredibly tense as the graphic for the United States Championship match flashed onto the screen.
"We have reached one of the most highly anticipated rematches of the year," Cole said, his voice dropping into a serious register. "John Cena defends the United States Championship against the Scottish Psychopath, Drew McIntyre. And gentlemen, the stakes have never been higher."
"If Drew McIntyre loses tonight, he is permanently barred from challenging for the United States Championship as long as John Cena holds it," Lawler reminded the audience. "His back is completely against the wall!"
The wailing, aggressive sound of bagpipes pierced the air, and the Parisian crowd instantly showered the entrance stage with heavy, visceral boos.
Drew McIntyre stepped out, wearing his dark leather jacket and combat boots, his fists heavily taped. He carried the stolen United States Championship draped casually over his shoulder. The sadistic, confident smile was gone, replaced by a look of sheer, unhinged focus. He marched down the ramp, ignoring the fans completely, and slid into the ring.
He didn't hand the title to the referee. He stood in the center of the ring, holding the gold belt, staring intensely at the curtain.
The Time is Now blasted through the sound system, and the crowd erupted.
John Cena sprinted out onto the stage, entirely skipping his usual poses. The franchise player was all business. He charged down the ramp, sliding under the bottom rope, and marched directly up to McIntyre.
The two heavyweights stood nosevto nose in the center of the ring. Drew sneered, tossing the United States Championship forcefully into Cena's chest. Cena caught the title, maintaining eye contact, and handed it back to the referee, who quickly raised it for the crowd before calling for the bell.
DING! DING! DING!
The match instantly erupted into a brutal knuckle punches brawl.
There was no chain wrestling, no grappling, just two massive men throwing heavy right hands with the clear intent to knock the other unconscious. McIntyre quickly utilized his size advantage, driving a heavy knee into Cena's gut and whipping him hard into the corner. Drew charged in, unleashing a relentless flurry of stomps, completely ignoring the referee's warnings.
"Drew is fighting like a man who knows his entire career trajectory is on the line!" Booker T noted as Drew dragged Cena out of the corner and delivered a stiff, high angle stalling suplex.
Knowing traditional wrestling wouldn't be enough to keep Cena down, Drew resorted to underhanded tactics. He raked Cena's eyes when the official was out of position, used the ring ropes for illegal leverage during submission holds, and continuously targeted Cena's previously injured lower back with heavy elbow drops.
"He is breaking every rule in the book!" Lawler complained as Drew blatantly choked Cena on the middle rope.
"He is doing what it takes to win, King!" JBL argued passionately. "There is no honor in a championship match, there is only victory! Drew McIntyre is fighting for his life out there!"
The match crossed the twenty minute mark, escalating into a grueling test of endurance. Both men were battered, bruised, and operating on pure adrenaline.
Drew hit a devastating Future Shock DDT that earned a heart stopping twovand a half count. Frustrated, Drew retreated to the corner, stomping his foot rhythmically, signaling for the Claymore.
He charged forward, launching his massive frame into the air.
But Cena ducked it.
As Drew crashed onto the mat, Cena pounced, violently locking in the STF! The exact same hold that had forced Drew to pass out on Monday Night RAW.
The crowd lost their minds, fully believing this was the end.
Drew screamed in agony, clawing at the canvas. He was trapped in the dead center of the ring. Remembering the humiliation of passing out, Drew reached deep into his reserves. He planted his hands and pushed up, using his sheer lower body strength to flip over, kicking Cena aggressively in the face to break the hold.
Both men scrambled to their feet.
Drew swung a wild, desperate right hand. Cena ducked under it, scooped McIntyre up, and planted him with a thunderous spin out powerbomb!
The Paris crowd roared in anticipation as Cena raised his hand. "You can't see me!"
Cena hit the ropes, delivering the Five Knuckle Shuffle cleanly across Drew's forehead. He backed away, waiting for Drew to stagger to his feet. Cena ducked under Drew's arm, hauling the massive Scotsman onto his shoulders, and delivered a devastating Attitude Adjustment!
Cena hooked the leg.
"ONE!"
"TWO!"
"NO!"
Drew kicked out at the absolute last microsecond!
"Unbelievable!" Cole shrieked. "Drew McIntyre survived the Attitude Adjustment!"
Cena didn't look frustrated. He looked resolute. He knew he had to completely break the Psychopath to keep him down.
Cena immediately dragged Drew back to his feet. He didn't give the challenger a second to breathe. He ducked under his arm, hauled the massive two hundred and sixty five pounder onto his shoulders for a second time, and delivered a catastrophic, echoing second Attitude Adjustment!
Cena folded Drew up, hooking both legs tightly.
"ONE!"
"TWO!"
"THREE!"
"He got him!" Cole screamed as the bell rang. "A double Attitude Adjustment finally keeps the Scottish Psychopath down! John Cena retains the United States Championship!"
"What an absolute war of attrition!" Lawler cheered, applauding from the desk. "Drew McIntyre threw the rulebook out the window, but John Cena proved why he is the absolute benchmark of this industry!"
"It is a tragedy!" JBL complained, shaking his head. "Drew McIntyre fought his heart out, but that contract stipulation is final. He is out of the United States Championship picture!"
Cena pushed himself up, exhausted but triumphant, as the referee handed him the gold. He held the title high, having permanently eliminated his most dangerous challenger currently.
The action did not stop, the chaotic energy of the pay per hour view rolling directly into a highly anticipated match for the WWE Tag Team Championships.
Ryback and David Otunga, representing the remaining power of The Nexus, marched to the ring accompanied by Wade Barrett and the rest of the faction. They were defending their tag titles against the highly skilled, fan favorite duo of Alberto Del Rio and Sin Cara.
"The Nexus lost the numbers game earlier tonight," Cole reminded the audience, referencing the Intercontinental match. "Let's see if they have adjusted their strategy."
The match was an incredibly fast-paced, high-flying affair, completely contrasting the raw power of The Nexus. Sin Cara utilized his incredible lucha libre acrobatics to dizzy Otunga, while Del Rio brought his stiff, aggressive technical striking to keep Ryback grounded.
For the first ten minutes, the challengers had the champions completely on their heels. Del Rio locked Otunga in his signature Cross Armbreaker, and it looked like new champions were about to be crowned.
But Wade Barrett, standing on the outside, proved exactly why he was the leader of the faction. As Sin Cara climbed to the top turnbuckle to hit a diving senton to break up a double team attempt, Barrett casually slid his Intercontinental Championship belt into the ring, directly into the path of the referee. The official immediately bent down to remove the foreign object.
