Chapter 11 - The U.A. Sports Festival: Obstacle Race
By One Above All

.
How mundane. To be trapped in the stifling compacted conditions of a Japanese passenger train. This is what is being thought by the infamous, well not yet anyway, Victor von Doom. Behind him as he stood firmly to the cart's entrance was the average and contemplative masses of Japan's local hard-working adults. He saw youths his current age several carts ahead of the train, but he didn't wish to mingle with any who might bother him with adolescent dribble.
If any were so keen and judgmental, they would say that it was a sad sight to see someone so young left by themselves in such a poor state with no companionship. To merely accept his fate to be like those he now surrounds himself with. Such a poor sight to say, especially since the one in question was a foreign boy of a war-torn European nation.
But not him, not Victor von Doom. He cares little if not at all for what these locals think. As they see a foreigner who appears homesick, he was merely observing every potential alert and event through his newly designed Universal Tech Glasses. These specially designed spectacles are made of an all new polymer type material laced with microscopic adamantium atoms. Don't ask him how long it took him to get that to work. The lenses themselves are linked to a secured universal program operating software to which he could see everything he wishes to see thanks to cranial sensors fibered into the glasses' temples. These Temples can also vibrate certain frequencies into the sides of his skull, so he and only he can hear what is being broadcast to him.
Since the lenses are fitted to match his ocular conditions, everyone around only sees normal everyday glasses. To Victor von Doom, he sees multiple screens all emitting events and probabilities under his own measures to speculate what the best course of action would be. First, he'll have to review the reports from the last two days. One enlarged to show the events of Tuesday. May 7, 2174. The security job given to Squad Belova came out with no major issues. The media convention of anime and manga was secured with conflicts involving villains. It was a waste of time and resources for SHIELD to invest in. The next screen enlarged to show the events of Wednesday. May 8, 2174. It seems two major issues had occurred. A SHIELD survey drone had gone missing with the Antarctic territory and Hydra had begun their siege in Africa a day early. During Odin's visit to Wakanda no less. Global media are currently divided on the new escalation within the continent. The majority are calling it a new terrorist group. Typical since the Hydra forces sent their donning different colors and attires to keep things discreet. Best not bring eyes and ears back home they might think.
The more Victor von Doom sees the pandemonium occurring, the more he seethes internally. Enemies had presented themselves and he was here in some Asian country just to entertain the unaware and oblivious. He had no choice on the matter sadly. The Wakandans dissuaded the Director from giving him entry and she allowed it. As of yesterday, both squads and the Thunderbolts were flown straight to Wakanda following the first assault. This excluded him, Eddie Brock, and Arthur Parks. The three remaining elite SHIELD youths continue this useless mission of observing Izuku Midoriya and to participate as SHIELD representatives in the Yuuei Sport Festival.
Such nonsense was beneath him. How can he possibly accomplish anything with his time spent on a spectacle of athletic education. A screen showed Erik and Creed commencing in an attack on several Hydra mobile offensives and he was to not lead them in a much more efficient and decisive victory. He'll just have to hope that Yelena's leadership isn't as overestimated as he deems it.
He had to get his mind off it. Doom shifts the screens to virtual charts displaying probabilities involving the sport festival. The event's security detail consisted of both local police, local Pro-heroes, and Japanese division SHIELD operatives. Added the fact that the league of Villains had lost a majority of their forces. Probability of a villain attack, 10%. Acceptable. Should any displays of Izuku Midoriya using One for All during the event reach to suspicious level of being comparable to All-Might's own power, then a protocol software will infect all surveillance, audio, and streaming platforms with either Ads, cutaway to random news bulletins, or will just buffer and lead to a connection issue. Midoriya's secrecy, 40%. Tolerable. Gaining at least the satisfaction showing these so-called peers of his that he is rivaled by none and will take the gold medal cementing that he is one who shall never lose. 70%. Unacceptable.
Doom's pupils burned green as he read that percentage. There was a chance he might lose in this farce of a contest. The lenses then shifted to a percentage chart showing those that might stand against his might. When he saw the numbers, he sighed mentally for he should have known that it would be those two. Venom and Living Laser. Of course, the only ones to match him would be those of his own multiverse. It doesn't matter. He will not lose.
As the doors of the cart opened, Doom walked ahead of the masses in a confident stride as he contemplated one last important matter that needed his attention. Glancing at a hallway not packed with people, he took a sharp right and timed when anyone would be willing to make the same choice. As all that were with him had taken a different path, Doom, in a split second, had shifted his quirk's green particle into a green disc and enveloped himself through it. What he saw next was a familiar alleyway that he had seen a couple times on the final stretch to a long road up the high hill Yuuei was built upon. Going forward and taking a right, he found that same long road and from afar, Yuuei Academy.
Victor von Doom now has a stronger grasp on Kurogiri's mist portal quirk.
"It would have been a thirty minute walk from the train station to here. With further practice, I could go even further distances and possibly enveloped more matter through the portal, not just myself.", said Doom analytically as a ping just vibrated through his glasses.
Probability of winning the Sport Festival, 80%. Doom smiled as he removed his glasses and continued on his way to Yuuei.
"At least I don't have to take that train anymore.", said Doom as the morning sun's warm light and the morning's cool breeze paraded his trek up the hill.
… Somei Junior High, morning assembly …
'Not a single thing from him', thought a thirteen year old Canadian as he walked across the street to reach Somei's entrance.
The young James Howlett was looking at his phone as he and his feathered head friend walked across the street and towards their school's entrance. Logan and Yokuto had arrived on the day of Somei Junior High providing a sport festival viewing field day. All classes are cancelled to provide an extra day for all students to prepare for upcoming assignments and clubs are required to create event activities for all students in the mornings and afternoons. Since it was a free day, the young Canadian was just going to skip it and stay home.
Unfortunately, Yokuto had offered up the idea that they could arrive to witness the Yuuei sport festival to learn what necessary skills it would take to be in such an academy. Logan scoffed at the idea. It could be Creed rubbing off on him, but he knows from him that all it takes is to just destroy a bunch of robots. Still, it would be cool to see what Doom or Eddie can do when those two are kicking ass in a literal pay per view match. Not to mention, the club activities could be a decent enough workout for his feathered headed nerd friend. If this guy was going to Yuuei with him, then turning into a small bird wasn't going to cut it.
"Why not text back? He should still be up despite it being night where your brother is.", asked Yokuto who noticed that Logan had been looking at his phone for a bit too much.
"It's not that, Feathers. He could be busy. Way busy. I'll just have to keep waiting for him. Now remind me what this place wants us to do before the event starts and we're all packed in an auditorium to watch some highschooler beat each other, even though that sounds funny.", said Logan nonchalantly as he pockets his phone.
"Upon Principle Zoga's orders, all clubs are managing activities to provide extracurricular skill advancement during the morning before the event and afternoon for when we finish the remaining rounds of the activities. At the end of the day, the staff will count all the victory tickets with the class stamp and declare the winning class.", explained Yokuto as he read from his agenda.
"Not like I care, but what do we win? A pizza party?", asked Logan as he saw several big stands and platforms in rows with groups of students mingling about.
"This is Somei, Logan. Not an elementary school. The winning class gets to have an all-expense paid trip to any famous location in the country. Last year, we went to Kyoto.", answered Yokuto as he put his agenda away and gestured to Logan to follow him to the entry stall.
"So we won some fancy field trips. Pretty sure they'll restrict us from being too wild, right?", asked Logan as he and Yokuto picked up their class arm bands from the stall.
"Naturally. The trip will last for five days and we will have a high luxury bus with cargo space for when we buy anything from the trip.", explained Yokuto further as he and Logan walk among the traffic of students entering and exiting larger stalls.
"Sounds like vacation.", said Logan as he thought of the possibility of being called for a mission just when he could do something that was probably fun. A cheer could be heard from his far left. The basketball court was drawing a crowd and the two teens decided to check it out. As they approached the court, several students eyed Logan with some level of caution and curiosity. Some third year boys from the distance sized up the Canadian, chatty on how he did what they couldn't. First year girls scurried away as he turned his face slightly to their direction. Several that were in front of them that were rallying the entrance had split away like the red sea once they saw him.
Logan's usual slight scowl became a lot firmer as he looked to Yokuto who nearly buckled at the sudden attention as he knew what the Canadian teen was about to ask.
"Got any clues on why all eyes are on me all of the sudden, feathers?", asked Logan as the two got closer to the entrance. The sounds of basketballs being dribbled could be heard.
"Well, Logan, word had finally spread that you had beaten the entire Kurai Hawks bully group. Not that I'm ungrateful for Noble deed, but an action like that does gain attention. Especially with our school's stronger group.", explained Yokuto as he adjusted his glasses out of habit as he thinks of the ramifications.
"What stronger groups? I thought it was just the Silver Clan. Other than them, everyone else is just a bunch of rich kids.", asked Logan in annoyance and curiosity.
"Not true, the reason why the Kurai Hawks never went after the Silver Clan is because of their blood relation to the eternal number 11.", answered Yokuto as the two reached the open basketball court. Two teams were already in the game with one having more points than the other.
"The Silver Samurai.", the name gave Logan a tinge of edge. Like it was a name that he should be wary of.
"Indeed. I see you're familiar?", queried Yokuto.
"Me kicking ass isn't the only that goes around." answered Logan dismissively.
"Yes well, power and influence like that from the Silver Clan isn't one to challenge. Especially since they represent a key tradition here in Somei Junior High. Our school keeps a vow every year that they will graduate a hero family to any and all major hero schools.", proclaimed Yokuto as he saw a fellow student score a hoop.
"As long as they have the money, right?", asked Logan in a shallow tone.
"Naturally. The other strong groups of Somei sometimes have conflicts with the Kurai Hawks, but have other ways of dealing with them. I'm not sure they managed it, but all it had managed was to get the Hawks to go after lesser groups. Like those who don't have a clique or very small groups.", explained Yokuto.
As they discussed further on it, the game had ended with the winning team being the ones who wore the school's signature basketball jerseys. The losing team, slumped in defeat as they were, are the ones in typical workout clothing.
"Maybe next time Kibikozo, might want to practice before tryouts next month.", said the guy who wore the captain jersey.
"Maybe not even try, we don't need a pile of bricks to make the school's teams look bad.", said the vice captain insultingly as he passed the ball to the third member of their small team.
"Yo wall, check.", the third member threw the ball to the floor which bounced off and hit the Kibikozo boy in the face. This caused the boy to back step a bit and just nearly slipped to the ground. The one named Kibikozo then walked away with a hateful look on his face. Even Logan can admit that the sight of this abuse was making him mad.
"Hey feathers, who are they?", asked Logan as his scowl slowly returned to his face. Yokuto knew where this was going, but knew that he was unable to stop any of it.
"Remember the other strong groups in our school. We'll since others don't have the luxury of being related to a great hero. They seek influence and power through other means. Those three are part of the Sports Club Triad. An alliance of the basketball, soccer, and baseball clubs.", explained Yokuto with the aura of someone who uses the knowledge at his disposal to survive.
Logan took a long sniff of the air and growled silently as he detected that the three had been using their quirks during the game. He then detected another thing. He turned to his left to see from afar that Yokuto was now sneaking into the bleachers for some reason. He was going to investigate, but then he heard someone calling to him.
"Yo Gaijin"
Logan looked to see the three Basketball club members in front of him. Yokuto's face paled a little in their presence.
"We hear you're tough. Think you can play ball?.", asked the basketball team captain smugly.
Logan's face scowled more intensely. Looks like trouble found him again.
… Thursday. May 9, 2174. Sports Festival Stadium …
After so long, it had finally arrived. The U.A Sports Festival has gathered a large following of the Japanese population. News crews and Media representatives gathered at the security checks and local police aided event officials with directing watch points within seating areas.
"Why is the security check taking so long?", asked the reporter lady annoyed and tired.
"Not much we can do since they're still establishing a SHIELD watch tower by the main entrance.", said the camera man.
"SHIELD, seriously. How are we going to report on Class 1-A if those guys are always in the way when we get close?", said the reporter lady miffed.
"That can't be helped either, they're really serious about this since some of their own youth division is a part of the student body this year.", said the camera man honestly.
Elsewhere, mixed with police and SHIELD agents of the Japanese Division, Pro-heroes are also on duty as they observe the day's festivities.
"I was really hoping to do some scouting during the event.", said Kamui Woods curiously.
"With SHIELD here, they really shouldn't need us for most of it. Maybe there will be time later.", said Death Arms acknowledging the extra security.
"A bit overkill if you ask me", said Mount Lady as she smacked on a festival treat.
… Class 1-A locker room …
The whole class was in a mixed atmosphere of emotions and motivations. As each commented on their queries and anxieties of the crowds they've gathered, it all went hushed as Shoto Todoroki took all their attention as he confronted Izuku Midoriya. Just as this occurred, Victor von Doom and Eddie Brock were on their way to the locker room. The Latverian teen had just finished his debrief on his latest developments as he participated in a security detail meeting. All was prepared as he expects them to be. Reuniting with his sole remaining squad member, all that was left was to participate in this farce for the masses and prove his superiority. The first obstacle of course was to explain to his classmates why the other half of Squad Doom is currently unattended for the festival.
Just before Doom could open the door, Eddie put his hand on his shoulder and gestured for the Latverian teen to listen. The American teen's emotional sonar quirk told him that all serious commotion is occurring and that it is directed towards Izuku.
Both reincarnates stood silently behind the door and listened.
"I'm stronger than you. More capable with a manageable quirk. You have All-Might in your corner. He's guiding you, isn't he? It doesn't matter. Whatever you two have won't help here. I will beat you.", stated Todoroki with coldness matched only by his ice. The class was stiffened by this declaration.
"All these declarations of war lately.", said Kaminari in nervous humor despite the tension in the room.
Doom has heard enough. Just before Kirishima could ask Shoto what his deal was, the Latverian teen used his quirk to open the door to gain their attention.
"It seems I heard you wrong, Todoroki.", proclaimed Doom as he slammed open the door. The sudden dramatic entrance startled everyone except for Bakugou and Todoroki, both who slightly scowled at the two SHIELD youths. Doom's burning green pupils directed towards the icy hot teen didn't help at all to settle the tension.
"Allow me to correct you. Doom will win. There is no other outcome. I've made that promise very clear to our class and to our student body. You wish to prove yourself when all you've done is show weakness.", proclaimed Doom like a general scolding a failing soldier.
"What was that?", growled Shoto as his eyes narrowed at the Latverian.
The tension was proving to be much for the whole class now. The temperature was dropping as green particles could just slightly be seen floating around the room. Ochako, Mina, and Tsuyu were getting a little scared. Kaminari, Mineta, and Sero were sweating at the face off. Bakugou felt every inch getting angrier at the offensive sight in front of him. And Izuku, he was stuck frozen in anxiety and indecisiveness. It was only when he remembered what All-Might said to him before the festival that he knew what needed to be said to end the conflict.
"Wait a sec, Todoroki. I don't know what's going on in your head or why you needed to say what you said. But you're right. Of course, you're stronger than me. Probably stronger than all of us. It makes sense that you made it on recommendation alone.", proclaimed Izuku with his nervous face looking at the floor. This saddened Ochako and soon Kirishima was about to reassure the green-haired teen.
"He's right, you guys. We're going to be targeted by all the other courses. We all have to fight to stick out among them. That's why I'm going to aim for the top and win this.", declared Izuku with determination as he faced Todoroki with eyes filled with resolve. Shoto merely accepted it and left the room. The green-haired teen slightly let go a breath he hadn't realized he held on to. He then felt a strong gentle hand on his shoulder. He looked to see Eddie Brock with a reassuring smile.
"Creed would have been proud of that, Izuku.", said Eddie with confidence as Doom simply crossed his arms. Clearly Izuku hadn't just heard him say to the icy hot fool that he already declared his victory, but he'll hold off and let the shaking boy have his moment.
Izuku smiled back at the American and Latverian. Though the mention of the Canadian did bring up a thought that he needed to ask. "Hey guys, I was wondering. Where has Creed and Erik been? We haven't seen them all morning.", asked Izuku with curiosity. He already knew from Creed's warning from the other day that he might not make it. It would still be nice to know that he was okay.
"Hey yeah, where is Erik? Mina and I have been trying to reach him in the group chat?", asked Kirishima who was curious of his missing foreign classmates.
"Yeah, I really wanted to show Erik how much his training with us has helped.", said Mina with slight downcast at not seeing the German teen. It clearly showed that the two weeks have strengthened their bond.
Doom had uncrossed his arms and stepped up to show an image from his SHIELD device's holographic screen. It showed documented excuses and pardons from his highest district authority of both Yuuei academics and Youth Division leadership. Each one belonging to Creed, Erik, and three familiar looking students from Class 1-B.
"As you can see, five of our own have been removed from today's events. By our protocol and orders, we are not allowed to disclose any classified information. So do try to understand and for the moment that it isn't anything unfortunate, but it does require their presence. For now, myself, Brock, and one other in Class 1-B are all that will participate.", proclaimed Doom with stoic professionalism that appeared to be forged from years of doing it many times before. This didn't really brighten the moods of Izuku, Kirishima, and Mina. today wouldn't be completely great without those that help them to be ready.
"That is unfortunate. Today was meant to be a day for our whole class to represent ourselves as students and future heroes. Did they have a choice when the decision was made by them?", asked Iida who entered full class president mode. He wasn't being accusatory but merely concerned for his fellow classmates.
Eddie Brock tapped Victor von Doom at his elbow and gestured to his training uniform. Doom merely gestured back to go ahead.
"If it means anything guys, Doom and I were actually restricted from participating. Us not being there would technically be a good thing.", explained Eddie to the whole class. Doom let out an audible scoff at the proclamation.
"They wanted us to let you guys know that they really wished they could be here for you guys. They would have let you guys know themselves, but communications are cut off until the end of what they're doing.", explained Eddie further. Doom then decided to cease this questioning so that focus can go back to today's events.
"Just know that they are regretful for their unattendance. We should put our focus back on this farce and feed the masses their unhealthy need for competitive nonsense.", proclaimed Doom as he took his leave of the locker room. His nihilism toward the sport festival left the class divided. He swore to win it all but is disgusted by it. Nevertheless, his point was made across. They are here. It's showtime. Eddie Brock sighed at his squad leader's usual behavior. 'Let's get this over with.', thought Eddie as he followed Doom to the stadium.
"Don't mind him, guys. Come on, let's kick some ass.", said Eddie Brock to Class 1-A as he closed the door behind him.
… Sport Festival Stadium …
The crowd cheered. Cameras were set. The country of Japan and maybe the whole world was watching them. The two reincarnated teens of two dangerous villains, Victor von Doom and Eddie Brock walked alongside Class 1-A. The light at the end of the tunnel got brighter as they got closer to it. The loudspeakers boomed with the Present Mic's voice announcing their introduction. The families of each of the students were watching from their homes. Pro-heroes, veteran and rookie alike, seated at the highchairs. All-Might especially, his eyes set on his successor. The display was something to remember as the whole class marveled at the many people they've gathered for the spectacle. The Latverian and American were as calm as branches catching gentle breeze.
To Doom's left was Izuku and Iida, the former being nervous and the latter being more assured. To Eddie's right was Tsuyu and Mina. the former being the best part of his day and the latter being her usual bubbly self.
"Welcome to the Yuuei Sports festival. Where up and coming heroes fight for real to achieve worldwide fame and celebrity. This first group are no strangers to the spotlight. You know for withstanding a villain attack. The dazzling students lining up your TVs with their golden skills. The hero course students of Class 1-A." announced Present Mic with gusto. The crowd cheered louder.
"Not gonna lie, Doom. I'm actually kinda hype now. We get to see if these guys can keep up with us. A villain attack and two weeks of training should make them decent competition.", said Eddie positively. The time spent helping Tsuyu with her agility training made the young Venom rethink his stance on the event.
"Hardly, we have more experience than them. Our powers have only grown along with our respective quirk training. The conclusion to this event is rather set in stone for those who are aware. I can only hope that this doesn't cause any more annoyance for us. I mean, come on, one of the foreign students potentially winning a contest that's held proudly in a strict country in both political, economic, and societal traditions. We might make more enemies than we do admirers.", said Doom nonchalantly as he does his best to quiet out the crowd in his mind.
"Always with the worst-case scenario with you. Let's at least enjoy the little fun we'll get out of this.", said Eddie back with a sigh.
"On that, Brock. I'll humor you this once.", said Doom as he is reminded of his winning probability from this morning.
Class 1-B had then entered the scene.
"They've not been getting much screentime, but they're still chuck full of talent. Introducing, Class1-B.", announced Present Mic. among said class is the third other reincarnated teen, Arthur Parks. The young Living Laser merely adopted a bored expression on his face as the rest of his class had some nervous confidence or arrogant stoicism. Or for Monoma's case, pure smugness.
'Jeez guys, it's just a sports contest.', thought Arthur with a roll of his eyes. Next to him is Ibara Shiozaki, looking as pristine and pure as usual. Her eyes closed as her hands were in prayer.
"You don't seem pleased with today, Arthur. Why?", she asked as she finished her prayer.
"I could be anywhere else, but I'm here performing for these gawking ungrateful mooks. Plus, my team ain't here. I'm going to go loose and can't show off on those morons.", said Arthur agitatedly. Ibara took in that last part.
"You miss your friends, don't you?", asked her, saddened. She could understand that sentiment, but had they not grown during their training together as a class. She figured the bridge between their two perspectives had been built by now.
"Do I miss Caine being an ass to everyone else? A little. Do I miss Simon being his usual golden retriever self? Maybe. Do I miss Yelena kicking me in the nuts every time I fuck up? Hell no. but there was always that presence to help keep me grounded.", answered Arthur with his usual Jersey charm. Ibara can see now that there was something deeper between him and his team, but still… he could at least be here for them. For the class. Perhaps she could ask?
"The training we did with you and the others, will it be enough for us to get far in the festival?", asked Ibara shyly and cautiously. Arthur turned to her and noticed something off when she asked that. He then remembered something that Simon told him before he and the team left for Wakanda. Fine, he'll try to play nice.
"If you're wondering if you do great in the festival, then yes, you will. You guys have been pushing yourselves and should be proud of that. It's just you shouldn't be too hard on yourselves for kicking the ass out of your friends in this shit fair.", proclaimed Arthur in his best sincere voice he could muster. He was not used to this. Hell, the last time he was ever this nice was when… well, since he died. During his new life here, he was his old jerky self like last time and the only reason he got nicer was when he was under Yelena's boot under the Director's orders. But to actually make nice with new people, it never was easy for him.
"That could have been encouraged better, but I appreciate your thoughts for us surpassing our own expectations. I'm sure your friends miss you as well. So, for now, find comfort with us. Let's show them what our class can do.", said Ibara with positivity that only a pure soul could create. Arthur for a moment was a bit entranced by it. This chick was something else. Maybe being nicer could get him places.
Soon after, Present Mic announced the arrival of the other classes. Each in their way to represent themselves. Either in whatever support gear they've made for themselves or simply sulking at the notion that they were just there to make the hero course look better. As all classes situated themselves in a sorted crowd around the present stage platform, all eyes fell to the individual standing there and it's safe to say the male population in the audience stands had many pleasant things to say.
"Now the introductory speech.", proclaimed a scantly attired woman as he cracked her whip to the air. As said by some of the most awe struck and reddened of the audience, it appears that this year's chief umpire for the first years is the R-rated hero, Midnight. Around Doom and Eddie, their classmates had their own critiques on how their teacher was dressed for today's events. In most of their classes, she normally wore professional wear or casual wear that was passable enough to be considered school appropriate. As some were reddened by her choice of a hero costume, they let it be known.
"Someone should really talk to miss Midnight on what she's wearing.", said an embarrassed Kirishima.
"Yeah, that costume should come with a warning.", agreed a blushing Kaminari
"Is it really appropriating apparel for a high school game?", questioned a stoic Tokoyami. The little Mineta shamelessly approves of the sight. The two foreign boys had their own thoughts.
"You think she might be an old friend of Trickshot? She seems like his type.", queried an unsurprised Eddie to Doom who had his arms crossed with a cold stoic face. This farce was really starting to annoy him now.
"I wouldn't be surprised considering Barton's spontaneous shifting taste in women. Perhaps someone who also tried to capture him in the past and did so with whatever mature feminine wiles-based methods available to her.", claimed Doom as he decided to shift his sights to Arthur Park standing next to Ibara. An idea came to the mind of the Latverian as he wondered how the Jersey teen could be useful in the festival. Midnight then spoke loud on her mic.
"Silence everyone, and time for the student pledge, Katsuki Bakugo.", announced Midnight as the explosive teen made his way to the platform. Izuku was surprised by this display and Sero explained that it might have been due to Bakugo ranking first in the entrance exam. Doom and Eddie were actually glad that they stuck to the plan to stay second place back then. The Latverian didn't have the words for these pions who would sully his proclamations of greatness. It was beneath him. As Eddie, he wasn't good at speeches. The two looked to the platform to hear just whatever an annoying jackass like Bakugo could say to an entire stadium.
Bakugo stood there with the live mic and let out his honest answer to the world. "I just wanna say… I'm going to win.", said Bakugo plainly. Much to his class's dismay, the crowd of the other classes were in an uproar of anger and hostility.
"Not my fault that all of you are just steppingstones to my victory.", said Bakugo plainly with a thumb down gesture.
'This fucking guy.', thought the two foreigners disappointedly. Victor von Doom was more unimpressed than he was annoyed. Does this fool really believe that he can already claim victory when Doom is currently participating. For Eddie Brock, he just thought how nauseating the negative emotions of the crowd was overwhelming his quirk. If he vomits right now, he'll lose his nutrient reserves and look bad in front of Tsuyu.
Once Bakugo came back down from the platform, Midnight took center stage again to continue her announcement of the festival's events. The first event to decide the qualifiers would be an obstacle course race. The rules were simple. A four-kilometer race between the eleven classes where all actions are acceptable as long as they are on the track. This is when Doom smirked to himself. He did his studying and kept note of the internet coverage of races from festivals of previous years. There was a catch that they don't tell you about when winning the race. And if his intuition is right, which it always is, then a certain someone hadn't done their own studying. His eyes shifted to the uncaring Arthur Parks who walked with his class to the starting line. Doom then tapped Eddie by his arm and gestured to follow him.
The two foreigners then walked away from the proximity of their class. Some noticed, but didn't give it much thought. Tsuyu had noticed Eddie leaving her side, but realized that he was following Doom. Perhaps it was a SHIELD thing. She then regrouped with Mina and Ochako. Izuku had also noticed and thought it was too a SHIELD protocol, but he thought that it may involve him to an extent. He remembers that day of the battle trials. How deadly serious the Latverian was making sure that the secret of One for All stayed a secret. Would Doom do it? Would Doom sabotage the race to make sure that Izuku Midoriya, the new wielder of this power, loses the race and not show even a hint of his power.
This disheartened Izuku majorly. It was bad enough that he had to compete with his classmates, all of whom had impressive understanding of their quirks. Especially Bakugo. But he also had to go up against his own protectors. Literal SHIELD super agents in training. The green-haired teen shook off the anxiety and remembered what he promised All-Might. No matter what, he has to prove himself and tell the world "I AM HERE".
As Izuku rejoined with the others and took his position at the starting line. The two foreigners met up with the Jersey teen who had a look that told them that he knew what they were going to ask him. "Let me guess, you guys want me to slow down and make a whole neck to neck show of all three of us hitting the finish line. Show the whole country that SHIELD are better at making heroes than literal hero schools.", proclaimed Arthur nonchalantly with his hands in his pockets.
"Nonsense, Doom shall win this farce and humiliate these cretins his own way. But for now, we should secure a placement for Midoriya. And I want it to be anywhere below or way below first place. Brock and I shall secure our own impressive placement with our skill, you Arthur Parks are the fastest one here. And thus, you have my permission to go all out and win this first event.", proclaimed Doom in a surprisingly encouraging tone.
Both Eddie Brock and Arthur Parks were actually surprised by this. Shocked even. Was Doom actually considering being inferior in something?
"Who are you and what the hell did you do to the real Doom?", asked Eddie cautiously.
"Yeah, this is left field, especially for you. You want me to win this one?", asked Athur a bit weirded out.
"I won't explain myself any further. Just know that I do this minor embarrassment to myself for the sake of our tearful-eyed objective and to secure a stable condition to our authority. Be grateful that Doom gives you this chance to show your might to the masses unimpeded.", explained Doom further with his arms crossed.
"I don't know. These guys worked hard for this time to shine. I don't want to outshine them. Plus that dumbass Monoma made some of them to be a part of shit plan to outclass Class 1-A.", said Arthur with his eyes to the rest of his class.
"Why tell us that?", asked Eddie curiously.
"Because I don't care what he does. Caine and I helped train everyone and that smug bastard took everything to be some show. I know he'll lose, I know he will. I just don't want it to look like I'm a part of it.", answered Arthur irritated.
Victor von Doom took this in and knew just what to say to the Jersey teen.
"Your sentiments toward your class is noted, Parks. But as the example of your Class's apex, shouldn't their brightest demonstrate the true potential of their own? After all, you've aided in training them and thus they need to see what true power of a new generational hero should look like.", proclaimed Doom as he used his signature charisma and persuasion to tap into Arthur's psychological need of proving his worth. And it worked. Parks gave it some thought and figured if he was showing pity to them by going easy on them for this one.
"The thing is, I know you're playing me, but yeah that does sound like something I should do. Gotta show my class that the bar is still pretty high for them if they're gonna be any good compared to the amateurs watching us. And we should probably eliminate that Midoriya guy before he shows too much of his power, right?", said Arthur as he agreed to Doom's scheme.
"Eliminating Midoriya from participating any further events will be for later. He still needs the learning experience and I've already handled his exposure to any broadcast and coverage. All except for the signal being shown to his mother at their home.", confirmed Doom as he takes a quick glance at the green-haired teen of said discussion.
"You sure, Doom? Won't he just use it during the race?", asked Eddie curiously as he too glanced at Izuku.
"You and I have witnessed his penchant for adapting to the situation. True, we haven't seen a lot of it. He does hold a measure of a unification of logic and instinct. If he's smart, he wouldn't dare use his quirk for this race. Otherwise, he'll use up his only weapon to stay in any longer. No, he'll need to bear through and be creative. Like he always does.", proclaimed Doom with much acknowledgement to Izuku's annoyingly constant determination.
"Jeez, with how you say it. It's like you're in his Fanclub. What was it? The way his freckles shine in the sunlight?", mockingly said Arthur to Doom's annoyance.
"Don't be daft. Just win the race, so the rest of this farce can go as it should.", said Doom dismissively as he walked back to his class with Eddie in tow. Arthur merely scoffs and starts to stretch as he prepares for what might be the easiest win in his life.
"Racers, to your positions.", announced Midnight as all classes gathered at the doorway. As the signal lights let up with the count down, nervous anticipation and stern readiness is all that can be seen in the expressions of each of the students. Victor von Doom and Eddie Brock simply stood there as they waited for the final mark as Arthur cracked his knuckles and raised his face higher to let his red locks air out with each shake of the head. Izuku also readied himself as his promise to All-Might continued to play out in his head. Hoping his mentor and idol was watching him now as he glared at the doorway ahead.
With colorful commentary from Present Mic and Eraserhead, the classes had bunched up in the narrow doorway. All struggled to get through as some were unfortunately smooshed between each other. All the way in the back, the three foreigners waited for the right time to have the lead. And in a heartbeat skipping, breathtaking, and shocking display of his power, the red-haired teen of Squad Belova stole the show.
"Sorry Japan. A kid from New Jersey is winning this marathon.", said Arthur Parks smugly as his eyes glow a bright yellowish white with strands of his red hair glowing the same color at the ends. In a split second, he lifted to the air momentarily with his body sparkling with energy. And before the masses that gathered that day could blink, he shot straight past the crowd of students and, in less than a second, had shot straight back to the middle of the stadium. He slid to a stop on the same platform that Bakugo was on and left a burning charred black streak mark on the floor. The students that were there could only comprehend that a single streak of light had flown past them and reappeared after as all stopped their struggle to look back at the already first place winner of the race.
In the distance, several explosions could be heard from the obstacles that were planned for the classes to cross. Arthur Parks had made sure that they all knew he had won fair and square.
The non-hero classes could only gawk smack at the unfairness of such a quirk. Whether they had cared or not, winning was never theirs to begin with. Class 1-B had already seen such insane speed, but it still got to them on how ridiculous it was. Back in the USJ facility training they did with him, none of them had even come close to tagging him. At most, it was just stamina training. Even so, to be a literal laser and be possibly the fastest thing on Earth. They felt the gap they had with the Jersey teen. It would be for second place at this point. Class 1-A had their own thoughts. Some never thought that Class 1-B had such a person among them. Todoroki had lost his focus as it just clicked that he already lost. Bakugo could only stare with anger and shock that he had lost the first event just like that, without even a chance. These damn SHIELD bastards. Izuku was both shattered and speechless. This kind of quirk is among the SHIELD youth department. How was any of them to keep up with that?
The crowds of Japanese people who came to see their country's most famous event were speechless themselves. And then, the uproar of excited surprise boomed across the stadium. The paparazzi, news crews, and broadcasting teams rapidly shifted their cameras and devices to the foreigner on the platform. The red-haired Jersey teen simply raised his hands and beckoned to the crowds to keep their excitement for him going. He wouldn't lie or deny the fact that adoration didn't feel a little good.
Present Mic, Eraserhead, midnight, and the rest of the pro-heroes stared at the sight that occurred. Hizasha Yamada didn't have the words as he freaked out. "SO FAST.", he cried out through the speakers. Shotoa Aizawa stared unblinkingly at the absurd potential this kid carried at being a powerhouse in the hero business. Too bad he was affiliated with SHIELD. The rest of his fellow teachers felt the same way. Bright future hero reduced to a soldier.
Toshinori had briefly coughed some blood at astonishment. He remembered his discussions with Director Carter and Principal Nezu about the SHIELD youths that were attending Yuuei. On paper, they sounded impressive, but to see it in action always gets him. He witnessed the power of the four that were always with Izuku Midoriya. Doom gave off the air of superiority due to his overwhelming intelligence, but quirk held a fluid devastating energy that reduced anything to rubble. Erik Lesher carried the coldness and veracity seen only in his precise destruction with magnetism. Creed was feral with his methods, but is a well skilled hunter with enhanced senses. Eddie Brock, who was a boy he kept an eye on. The American teen appears to show rapid evolution with his quirk, even to similar powers of that of the Nomu from the USJ incident. The reports of their combat encounters with massive robots and villains before even entering Yuuei were quite the read when he looked through them. True, his own students have grown since the USJ incident, but SHIELD had developed these boys frighteningly fast.
"This Arthur fellow definitely proved that they are serious with all of the youth agents.", thought Toshinori as he controlled his coughing fit. Said red-haired teen stood up and walked up to the mic that was still on.
"And that guy said he was going to win.", said Arthur mockingly in fluent Japanese. He then gingerly sat at the edge of the platform to watch the rest of the race, unaware that Bakugo had a pulsing vein of rage directing toward him.
"UH, W-HAT WAS THAT, FOLKS? The race already has a winner and before any of them even had a chance to leave the starting line. ERASERHEAD, please who is that kid?", announced Present Mic as he pleaded to his fellow teacher for answers on the foreigner who took first place. Eraserhead regained his focus and steadily inhaled to compose himself.
"That student is Arthur Parks of Class 1-B. Foreign student from New Brunswick, New Jersey of the United States. If anyone here had caught up to the news lately, then they would remember that Yuuei had a collaboration deal with SHIELD. Arthur Parks is of their Youth department where they train children with potentially powerful quirks under preventative manslaughter clause under U.N. doctrine. For Parks, he was born with a quirk classified as Laser Embodiment that allows him to turn his body into a literal beam of photonic energy. With the speed of light, he already destroyed three of the zero pointer robots, melted some of the rock columns, and detonated a quarter of the landmines. And he's only one of three of the youth department attending today.", explained Aizawa as a sweat drop appeared on his head at the thought of SHIELD having more kids with powerful quirks like these.
As the crowds gossip of the boy with the incredible power, another pro-hero was among them observing from afar. Originally, he was here to witness the progress of his quote on quote finest masterpiece. However, he won't lie and say that the new competition doesn't have him on edge on his son's chances of winning. Then again, with how stubborn the boy is, his chances were never high to begin with.
"That boy better get over himself fast. He'll be tested by powerful outsiders who have no right to be here." said the number 2 hero, Endeavor, who kept his arms crossed with a scowling observation of the red-haired invader.
… Somewhere else …
"Do you see that, Tomura? What a useful power that child has. It's a shame that he serves our new enemy.", said a grossly statically voice through a speaker.
Under his master's orders, Tomura Shigaraki, the leader of the recently embarrassed league of Villains, had to watch the Yuuei sport festival. To observe potential adversaries at the very most and look out for potential recruits at the very least.
"Such a powerful quirk that I never thought could be conceived from abroad. Perhaps, we should start looking for delightful additions from across the pond.", said another much older voice.
The one forced to listen to such annoying praise to a powerful quirk that wasn't his, Tomura starting scratching at his neck in irritation. "Those damn SHIELD dogs. They're cheating here like they did back at that dumb place All-Might should have died in.", said Tomura Shigaraki cynically.
"Don't dwell on the past, Tomura. Even so, this child wasn't there that day. You lost to a wild Canadian, who was only special by the fact that he has a healing factor that your decay quirk barely worked on.", said his master in judging tone.
Tomura grunted in anger as he continued to watch the Sports festival.
… Back at the Sports Festival …
As most of the students were busy collecting themselves from their shock, Shoto Todoroki used this opportunity to freeze his way through the narrow entrance.
"Apologies, but it seems I have no reason to slow down now.", said Todoroki to anyone as he freezes the ground and runs further from the mass of students. Much to his slight surprise, some of his fellow Class 1-A had avoided his ice and were maneuvering easily with their unique quirks.
"Nice trick, Todoroki.", said Momo as she vaulted over the ice by creating a pole from her body.
No way I'm ending up in third to you, Icy hot bastard.", yelled Bakugou in rage as he blasts further ahead.
You freeze me before. It won't happen again.", said Ojiro as he put his tail training to good use.
As all the others resorted to either skating with their quirk or simply watching their steps as they tread the ice, two certain SHIELD youths made their presence known. And they weren't to be ignored. Emerging from the entrance's shadows and scaling above those that made it out, Victor von Doom and Eddie Brock soared in great speeds to catch up to the current leads. The Latverian used his particle energy quirk to jettison himself by emitting jets of green energy from his palms and boots. Perfectly imitating the flight patterns of his own Ironman armor back in his workshop. Eddie summoned portions of his black suit to his limbs and back to create muscular wings for flight.
"You know, we could have taken the lead already while everyone was still distracted by Arthur showing off.", said Eddie as he flew next to Doom.
"And be denied the chance of a dramatic entrance, I always show my superiority.", proclaimed Doom as he smirked.
"How do we do this, Doom? We beat each other up as we run or what?", asked Eddie cautiously.
"For now, we run. We can sabotage each other at the third and final obstacle.", explained Doom as he noticed that the two of them were about to reach Todoroki.
"I can roll with that.", said Eddie in relief as he noticed from afar the three ruined zero pointers on the ground. Their heads have holes through them with heated metal melting at curved edges.
Just as they reached Todoroki, Eddie was violently smacked away by a massive mechanical limb. Doom cursed at his rare ignorance for not noticing the other giant robot around them. As he assessed the situation, the other students had finally caught up to them.
"Ooh enemies have shown up out of nowhere. I bet we're in for a treat here. A test on strength and cunning. It's a robo inferno.", proclaimed Present Mic excitedly.
The crowd of students let out cries of shock and fear at the first obstacle in front of them. Some of Class 1-A let out criticisms of overkill and over budget. Doom heard all of these Nats whimpering and couldn't believe he was among their age group currently. Todoroki had then brought him out of his thoughts.
"They clearly went through all the trouble, but I wished they gave us something more difficult. Especially since my dear Ole dad is watching.", said Todoroki in venomous disdain as erupted ice to his surroundings and shot an icy flurry at the approaching massive robotic limb. In an instant, the mechanical behemoth was frozen stiff. The young Todoroki let out an exhale of cold mist.
"Then I'm sure he's proud of you.", Todoroki heard Doom's voice say to his left. The Latverian teen had his right hand aimed at the frozen zero pointer. In a split second, it looked as if Todoroki's ice had turned green and suddenly imploded into shattered frozen metal parts and fiery explosions. "However, unlike him, you won't achieve second place.", said Doom in a mocking tone as he shot forward away from the now disgruntled Shoto.
As Todoroki quickly catches up to Doom, the crowd of students behind stood still at the display of power they witnessed. Some questioned how they could get across. Either through the piles of wrecked robots or the horde of still alive robots. But before any of them could make a move, another powerhouse made a comeback. Four massive black tendrils burst from a dent in the track's barrier. They came down in a thunderous slam to lift up a dark mass that then shaped into a gaping maw with huge teeth.
"ALRIGHT, I'M PISSED.", it roared as it chomps on to a zero pointer's head and then uses its four massive tentacles to wrap up another zero pointer. The dark mass then violently pulled the two huge bots together and summoned black spikes that pierced through the hulls internally.
The two dead giants then slumped into themselves as the dark mass finally reformed into a single individual. Atop the mechanical ruins stood Eddie Brock fully enveloped in his black suit. Sun glistening on his organic white spider symbol, his white lenses narrowed at the speeding Doom and Todoroki. He summoned his signature wings and immediately began his chase.
"I'm not out of this yet, Doom", yelled Eddie as he quickly flew over all the robots below him.
In the span of a few minutes, three whole zero pointers were defeated as the students remained where they were in disbelief. As the other robots closed in on them, Present Mic let out another series of excited commentary.
"Amazing. A complete display of jaw dropping power. Since we still have the rest of the race to finish, those three are ones we should watch. It seems absolutely unfair. Thoughts?", said Present Mic enthusiastically as he asked his fellow teacher for his commentary.
"Todoroki's attack is offensive and defensive.", explained Aizawa nonchalantly.
"No wonder he was put on recommendation. He never fought those robo infernos before. But hey, the same could not be said for the two other SHIELD youths that are with us today. Not to mention, those two are also in Class 1-A and were there during the villain attack. Got any info on these guys, Eraserhead?", asked Present Mic as the broadcasting screen zoomed in on Doom and Eddie.
"Victor von Doom, born from the European country of Latveria, he is said to be a tactical genius and has an energy manipulation type emitting quirk. As for the other one, Eddie Brock, born from New York, he has a transformation quirk that allows him to control an organic dark matter that comes out of his body. Basically, giving him strong shapeshifting abilities like the full bodysuit he's wearing.", explained Aizawa as he is reminded that SHIELD gave him the most dangerous ones for his class.
Back on the platform inside of the stadium, Arthur watched his fellow SHIELD youths making it across the first obstacle. "Showoffs.", he said to himself nonchalantly.
For the students that were still there, some were freaking out at the raised stakes of being mauled by robots. Suddenly, someone emerged from the wreckage done by Eddie Brock. Busting through the wreck, Kirishima roared with vigor as his hardening quirk aided in his escape.
"Damn, Erik was right. Eddie got some real power when he's mad. But jeez, I wished he noticed I was right below. Anyone else would have been killed.", said Kirishima with both caution and relief. It was then that another had burst from the metal right next to Kirishima.
"At least our SHIELD guy took the win from you Class 1-A jerks. I'm going to seriously beat the crap out of that goop wearing prick. Anyone else would have been killed.", said Tetsutetsu as he too spoke with caution and relief. He then noticed that Kirishima had already taken off running. He doesn't plan on being left behind.
"Our quirks are basically the same. How am I supposed to stick out now?", cried Kirishima with stoic tears streaming.
"You damn copy-cat.", said Tetsutetsu back in jealous rage.
The two tough, skinned teens noticed the approaching robots, and they separated to face their own foes. Kirishima took Erik's training to heart and focused on attacking the joints of the bigger bots. If he could scale easily, he would focus on headshots. Thanks to his metal durability tests from the German SHIELD youth, Eijiro had developed a type of muscle memory and feel with a kind touch he gains after punching metal for a bit. After destroying his first robot, he can pretty much tell where the weak spots on these machines are. Eventually, the red-haired tough, skinned teen could feel the metal eviscerated to his fist like tissue cardboard.
Eijiro saw a mechanical clamp come down and he dodges to throw a solid jab at the joint of the left arm. The robot buckled at the dismemberment which allowed Kirishima to step on its lower chassis to deliver an uppercut that took off its head. Another bot treaded forward and the red-haired teen reinforced his arms further to punch through the metallic treads. With the bot immobile, he then punched through the metal spine to disconnect the server connection to the main body. Satisfied with his work, Eijiro went back to running for the second obstacle.
For Testutestu, his training with the strongest and fastest of his class had given him a good sense of maneuvering and a sense of durability awareness. Caine's muscle had beaten his metallic skin by a mile long gap, but each punch the tall muscular American teen had given made him feel the full shock to senses. For the first time, he can believe in the notion to not rely on the durability of his quirk. It's one thing to take all the hits, but to do nothing after because that's all you're good for. He remembered the small story that Caine had told them about an old friend who also had metallic skin. Skin of steel, but a heart of gold. Never just relying on his toughness, but on his ingenuity and skill. Even a goliath should act like a David.
With the stamina training from Arthur, Tetsutetsu gained a sense of managing where he should devote his heftiness to. Also, to take note of managing his metallic luster. Can't avoid lasers, deflect them. He reminded himself to add metal polish to his hero gear later. That being said, after having witness light speed firsthand he felt most of these robots were going to slow for him. With each of his own strikes being deliberate and quick, he would plow through three boats until finally following after Kirishima.
As those two ran for it to the second obstacle, their respective classes showed their progress from their growth during the two weeks from before. The teachers of Yuuei, especially Toshinori and Aizawa, observe such growth in their students. Whether from the villain attack or being exposed to SHIELD's own brightest, these kids have learned to not hesitate. They have seen the real world and understand that one must give everything to stay above the struggle.
Bakugo roared as he refused to allow another SHIELD youth to beat him. He blasts over zero pointers as he gains chase to keep up with Todoroki, Doom, and Eddie. Iida had strengthened his jets as he and Doom had trained in how to push their physicality to endure prolonged quirk use. He strikes his foes with powerful kicks and speed past through unnecessary fights. Tsuyu, thanks to her agility training with Eddie, learned to use her tongue as both a mobility tool and a maneuvering anchor. Wrapping a tongue around a robot's neck, she pulled herself into a whip motion and hooked around another robot. Her frog hands clung to the ground and recalled her tongue with the help of leverage which caused the first robot to slam into the second one. Mina Ashido, thanks to her acidity potency training with Erik, can now gauge how strong she can make her acid against certain metals. And with good work outs to her arms and working on her aim, she can end encounters before they could approach her. As she runs, she leaves behind several robots who suffer from all their heads melting.
Then, there was Izuku Midoriya. Parkour training. Basic combat training. Stamina training. Victor Creed swore that he would make the fanboy become a competent badass before he had to leave for Wakanda. Izuku wouldn't lie and say that he thought he might not make it to the festival if his body ached too much from what the Canadian had driven into him. He knows he can't rely on One for All this early, so his only option was to just keep running. But he noticed a large metal plate that could be used as both a shield and a blunt weapon. Defeat one robot. Scale through rubble to gain better vantage. Catching up to those that were about to reach the second obstacle. As both to warn himself and to be inspired, he witnessed the impressive progress that each of his classmates had gained. It was like he said to Todoroki back in the locker rooms. They were all pushing themselves to be the best.
It was then that Present Mic had spoken again to all to hear.
"For those of you who thought the first obstacle was easy. Let's see how you feel about the second one. If they take a spill, they're out, so they have to get creative. It's the fall.", announced Present Mic as the students reached a large artificial canyon of stone pillars.
The hero course students use their natural capabilities to get across the bottomless Kassym the best they can. However, the real action was in the current lead of the race. Doom and Todoroki were neck and neck as they took opposing cables to avoid encountering each other to lose speed. The two leading teens eyed each other with pillars they crossed to gauge any change in motion. So far, it seemed inevitable that they'll both hit the third obstacle simultaneously.
'Damn these SHIELDs, Midoriya is who I got to beat. His connection to All-Might. Winning this whole thing with only my ice. That's the objective. I can't lose. Not when he's watching.', thought Todoroki darkly with his bangs shadowing his scowl. He looked to his Latverian rival. It goes without saying that this individual was going to be a problem. Him and the two Americans. But this Latverian, Todoroki felt it back in the locker room. They both have something to prove, but one will have to lose for the other to get what they want. So, what was it?
'What drives you, Doom? Why should you stand in my way to finally beat him?', thought Todoroki in both seething animosity and cautious curiosity as he eyed Doom once more.
For Victor von Doom, he only had one thought on his mind. His new power. Use it now and end this credulous race or wait and use it advantageously. For now, he'll wait. After all, it's kind of fun to play with the false integrity of the young Todoroki against him. He could see it. This individual is only showing a strong front to hide his true weakness. Whatever it may be, it will be revealed in time. For now, let the fool think he could rival him. His miscalculation will be his undoing. This brought a smirk to his face as he accelerated to gain further distance. Todoroki did the same to keep their shared status as second place.
Behind them but not far for long, Eddie Brock and Katsuki Bakugo were tailing and weren't as keen to share third place.
"OUT OF MY WAY, SHIELD SLIME.", yelled Bakugo as he sent a blast at Eddie's wings.
"OW, FUCKING BOOTLEG FIREWORK.", yelled back Eddie as shifted his burnt wing into a dark whip and tried to slap the explosive teen with it. Unfortunately, Bakugo dodged it by the skin of his teeth as the two teens semi-fought and flew in the air.
Eddie Brock was now getting real sick and tired of this annoying loudmouth. If it's not his mouth, it was his damn loud as hell explosions. For Bakugo, seeing the black goop on his American classmate brought up embarrassing memories. He wasn't going to be beat by another slime.
As the four tenacious teens finally reached the end of the second obstacle, their classmates had begun their efforts in getting across the canyon. Some have a tougher time than others. As the students make their grueling way through the race, the audience back inside the stadium talk among themselves on the incredible talent of Todoroki and the bizarre presence of the SHIELD youths.
"The kid in the lead just can't be stopped", said a man in a bandana.
"His quirk is amazing, but it's not just that. He's also incredibly athletic and perceptive.", analyzed a bald, tan-skinned man.
"You got that right. You know the flame hero, Endeavor? That's his son.", said an enthusiastic man in a basketball jersey.
"Ah, makes sense! Guess it comes naturally since he's related to a pro like that. Agencies all over will want him for a sidekick.", said a tall man with a pompadour.
"It's more surprising that he's keeping up with literal child soldiers. These SHIELD youth are frighteningly efficient with their quirks despite being so young.", said a woman holding a fan close to her face.
"Yeah, and what's with that thing that one of the announcers said? The preventive manslaughter clause? Is Yuuei actually allowing possible killers participate with their students?", asked an afro man cautiously.
"SHIELD must have made a deal that Yuuei couldn't refuse. Not sure I like the idea of one of our country's best hero schools being strong armed like that.", said an elderly man offended.
"To be fair, think of how well they've done so far.", said a sly cool voice. Those in the conversation turned to see a young adult man in his twenties with long black hair wearing a designer jacket and a plastic All-Might mask.
"What do you mean? SHIELD is just here to steal the show for some foreign propaganda piece. It was cheating to let that one kid who already won the race to participate. Like, how are the rest of them supposed to beat that? I bet the other two SHIELD kids will take second and third place. Just to send a statement.", said the elderly man with the same disgruntled tone.
"Possibly but look back at past events. They've already shown their stuff when they protected the same kids from a villain attack. And if recent affairs are any indication, they've definitely shown they are quite handy when aiding security firms in the country. True, don't trust every news outlet you see, but their presence tends to bring a lot more good than bad.", counterpointed the sly All-Might mask wearing adult.
His words laid a seed in each of them. Not doubt, but a consideration of anticipation. Was it the fact that SHIELD had done some good lately? Or simply the way the man spoke all while wearing the face of the number one hero? As if All-Might himself was singing the organization's prayers.
"I say we give them a chance. Who knows? Maybe we'll see just how good the rest of the kids are when compared to these junior super spies." Said the sly man concluding his part of the conversation as he laid back on his chair. The rest of the chatty crowd he was with followed just the same, even elderly man who toned down a little.
Unknown to all them, the young adult in the All-Might mask was somebody heavily invested in the progression of the reincarnated teens. For under the mask hid the smirking face of Agamotto. The current sorcerer supreme of this Earth who got tickets this day for a good seat to the Yuuei sports festival. And right now, eyes observe the reincarnated Latverian and thoughts of the future are now churning in his mind.
'It sickens me to give unwarranted compliments, but I won't lie to myself that I'm not a little excited to see what you could do without magic, Doom. It's just a shame that a child of a former student of mine isn't participating as well. A teenage Doctor Doom vs a teenage Juggernaut. That would have been quite a show.', thought Agamotto gingerly to himself.
The speakers boomed to life as Present Mic announced the third and final obstacle.
"With a near four man lead, our race reaches its final bumper as the rest of our students are still stuck on the canyon. With first place taken, their only concern now is to not get eliminated by ending up anywhere below 42rd place. But wait, it looks like our two current leads have reached the final barrier. An active minefield. Wait a minute… oh, I forgot that first place had literally driven a line wide enough for a single person to get across. Well, there goes the tension of watching your step. Instead, all we have to look forward to is to see who shoves who on a mine. It's basically the doorway again, but with more betrayal and explosions.", announced Present Mic at the edge of his seat.
"You just want to see bodies fly, don't you?", asked Eraserhead nonchalantly.
It was like Present Mic had explained it. A narrow path of charred and crumpled earth wide enough for a person to travel through. Fortunately for Doom, he makes his own way.
"I don't need the help of Parks' leftover victories.", proclaimed Victor von Doom as he continued to soar over the mines with his particle quirk. Todoroki catches up by quickly spraying ice to jettison himself on the safe path. He noticed that the Latverian had gotten faster, but he did the same by amping up more ice through his right side. Little did either of them know, but their biological weaknesses are starting to catch up to them. Doom's rust reaction and Todoroki's frostbite. It appeared that their accelerated speed had slowed down as a result.
'Damn it, he's avoiding direct contact with me to focus more on speed. He probably knows if I use ice too long, I'll develop frostbite on myself. He probably used some SHIELD resources to get a clue on that. He seems the type. He has to be planning another way to get ahead.', thought Todoroki to himself as he felt his right side getting shivering. Just before he could continue trekking the path, two uninvited people intercepted them.
"Truces over, Doom.", said Eddie as he dives onto Doom and plants both of them into mines. This caused an explosive plume of pink smoke to erupt. The sudden attack made Todoroki hesitate and caught off guard to the attacker next to him.
"HEY BASTARD, YOU'RE DECLARATION OF WAR IS FOR THE WRONG PERSON.", yelled Bakugo as he swiped his left arm at Todoroki to send an explosion. As of now, the four leads are now in collision with each other and hostilely raced to get further. Eddie pounced out of the crater, leaving Doom there. The Latverian refused to let that go unpunished, so he sent a controlled shockwave to his surrounding radius and triggered the mines around him. This caused another wide explosive plume which distracted Katsuki and Shoto. It also disoriented Eddie with a loud eruption. Confused and lost in the pink cloud, the three teens were unaware of Doom using his quirk to shoot straight out of the plumes.
"After a quick but intense four way fight, Victor von Doom of Class 1-A takes second place.", announced Present Mic as all cameras followed the Latverian. Said teen figured it was poultry play to mingle in such a waste of energy to fight and fly at the same time. But another had other opinions.
"COME BACK HERE, SHIELD DOG.", roared Bakugo as blasts himself furiously at Doom. The European and the Japanese teen were now locked in a mid-air tassel. Swipe of right explosion, deflected with a green energized right swing. Sudden green energized right kick, deflected with an explosive left swing. Bakugo felt a sting with every jab and block, like the sensation of having bees and wasps picking into his skin. Doom felt an intolerable pain throughout his limbs and body. His skin had begun the process to rust and erode, the burns from every explosion sent his way weren't helping either.
"I'M NOT LOSING TO ANOTHER SADSAP FOREIGNER. NOT THIS TIME.", barked Bakugo loudly as he released his next big blast.
"I REFUSE TO LET YOU THINK YOU'RE EVEN CLOSE TO BEING MY EQUAL. IN ANYTHING.", barked back Doom as he prepared a green energized burst.
Both teens stared at each with intense loathing, threw their attacks and a powerful shockwave sent both to opposing ends of the mine field. Bakugo rapidly creates mini explosions to hover away from too many mines. Doom quickly levitated with swirling energy and went back to jettisoning himself forward. Todoroki returns to the scene as he quickly freezes the ground and slides to catch up to the lead. He then felt a snatching feeling to his back and legs. He quickly watches his footing and abruptly falls on his back. He sees black webbing clung to him as another competitor rushed past him.
"Not sorry, dumbass.", mocked Eddie who resigned his wings and switched to an array of tendrils to rapidly pace toward the lead.
"You again.", said Todorkoi in spite as he rushed to continue the icy trek. He still had a grudge on the American for the battle training.
"I hate you too, Peppermint.", said back Eddie as he made some of his tendrils whip back and shoot web shots. Todoroki reacted quickly and had no choice but to slide and make a barrier. He thought furiously on how the American could possibly control this much of his own body. Unknown to him, Eddie did feel a limitation to his power. All his nutrients were a ticking time bomb to a tortuous hunger that could affect him. If he doesn't reach that finish line fast, things could get nasty.
"Incredible, folks. We're back to having a four man lead again. These guys are too skilled and too powerful to make a call. And hey, looks like our other competitors are catching up too. Who knows how it'll go.", announced Present Mic as the crowd's anticipation was to the sky. But just as everything seemed simple, another unpredictable factor made it to the scene very flashily.
BOOOOOOM
"Hey, that's the biggest explosion we've seen so far. Wait a minute, is that? Yes, it is. It's Izuku Midoriya of Class 1-A. Who did he do that?", announce Present Mic as all the racers stopped to the cause of the commotion. The largest pink plume could be seen at the back of the race. A lone individual on a metal fragment came out. The green-haired fanboy shoots straight past everyone from the lower placements and his over the four leads. All the classes saw Midoriya fly over and even the front runners had to stop to double take.
"DEKU, WHERE THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING?", Bakugo yelled in frustration that the one he hated most is now taking the lead.
"I can't waste time fighting. I have to beat Midoriya, not this SHIELD pawn.", said Todoroki in frustration.
"There it is. That infuriating ingenuity of his.", said Doom in annoyance at Izuku's insufferable determination.
"What the hell did Creed train him in? Being suicidal?", said Eddie in bafflement at Izuku's recklessness.
"What a stunning turn of events, folks. Now the four most dangerous ones in the race have stopped fighting each other and are now racing to beat Midoriya.", announced Present Mic as Midoriya was about to make land fall. Doom, Eddie, Bakugo, and Todoroki were already meeting Izuku at the end of the minefield. The Latverian and American at the left while the explosive blonde and icy hot teen at the right. But the fanboy wasn't done and threw his makeshift shield down on the last few mines. It would be the last staggering pink plume of the race as Izuku shoots further to reach the narrow entrance to the stadium. Right after, the four powerhouses in the race continued through the smoke and ran with their legs for the final stretch. Whether their weaknesses have taken hold or they stopped caring, the leg race would be pressed on with intense ferocity and sheer will.
Izuku was too far ahead. Bakugo and Todoroki were obtusely focused on their pity rivalry to not push their bodies and use their quirks to their limits. This is what Doom saw much to his incredulousness. He turns to see Eddie who reseeded his black suit and returned to Yuuei training uniform. At least for him, the Latverian understood that it might be due to low nutrients in his system. As for himself, he could feel it. His muscles are stinging and his skin is losing its integrity. The annoying itch of metallic rusted flakes under his clothes. The taste of blood at the back of his throat. Oh forget it. He'll use it.
Swallowing his blood and letting out some coughs, he timed his halt on running and the possible position that the blinding light from the other side of the entrance may hit the eyes of his fellow competitors. He looked back to see if any were behind him. There was none, but soon there will be. With one inhale, he allowed a dim wick-like warp to overcome him. The split second was ingrained in Izuku's eyes. Emerging from the shadow, a glum looking Doom with a bleeding nose stepped into the light and allowed a smirk with blackened teeth.
"We're both full of surprises. Aren't we, Midoriya?", said Doom as he raised his arms and basked in the attention he stole from the fanboy.
"Yeah, so we already had a winner, but can't lie. The rest of the race was so intense and so action packed that we can't help, but want more. Coming in second place, Victor von Doom. and yeesh, probably get him to Recovery Girl.", announced Present Mic as the rest of the competitors had started to arrive. Izuku stopped next to Doom with hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. Eddie slid with his knees on the ground and halted next to Izuku. His face was tired and uncaring. He was just happy that the race was over. It was then that Arthur Parks got off the platform and zoomed to his fellow reincarnates.
"Way to steal the spotlight despite being losers. Man, you guys look like hammered shit. What the hell happened in the doorway?", asked Arthur in curiosity.
"Some things that were out of my control. That's all.", said Doom with finality as he wiped the blood from his nose.
"So hungry.", said Eddie in tired irritation as he stood with a hand over his stomach.
"Doom", called out Izuku as the three reincarnates turned to face the fanboy with exhaustion.
"You used some kind of ability to get in front of me. You were so far behind in those final moments.", analyzed Izuku as he pressed on the Latverian for an answer.
"New ability?", asked Arthur, now more curious and looking at Doom.
"Oh yeah, I don't think we ever notify Yelena on that.", said Eddie as he looked around for a food vendor.
"All will be revealed later in the festival. For now, Izuku try to relax your body, allow your quirk to settle with recent physical overexertion, and enjoy your minor victory. After all, All-Might is watching.", proclaimed Doom as he stepped toward Izuku with a confident stride as he gestured to the stands where Toshinori Yagi was seated. Midoriya could see if not feel. All-Might was clapping in congratulation. So he swallowed his anxieties and tears. He may not have won in the race, but there was still time to prove himself in the rest of the festival.
Behind the four, Todoroki and Bakugo stood in exhaustion and aggravation. The explosive blonde gripped at his arm in rage. He lost again. Not just to Deku, but to SHIELD as well. In his rage filled mind and sight, he looked to see it again. Deku and SHIELD were standing together being chummy, probably mocking him. Not again, the next game will end differently. As for Todoroki, the icy hot teen held firm fists as he gritted his teeth slightly. This is the first disappointment and he didn't even have a shot to get first place to begin with. He eyed the people that could ruin his chances at keeping his promise. Izuku was supposed to be his target, but it seems others are going to be just as much of a hassle. Two annoying Americans and that intolerable European. Their actions today were pretty much like the battle trails. Mocking him that Ice won't be enough. No, not today, he won't use his left side for this.
"Hey guys, jeez, that was amazing. How are you guys this strong?", called out Ochako in exhaustion as Iida was in the background in shame and lamenting on his performance.
"Because we are.", Doom said simply with his arms crossed. "Cuz we were bored.", Eddie said as he pulled his tendrils back to see the hotdogs he had bought. "Cuz we're the best.", Arthur said cockily with his hands in his pockets.
Izuku and Ochako both sweat dropped at the blunt response from the three SHIELD youths. That's when the brunette girl noticed the new person. "Oh hey, you're from Class 1-B. What kind of power was that? You pretty much made half of general studies quit the race.", asked Ochako dumbfounded.
"Pretty sure our teacher already said that I could transform into a laser. It should be obvious why they knew they wouldn't win.", answered Arthur, still full of confidence. Just then, he noticed that Ibara walked by and called out to him.
"Excuse me everyone, Arthur, Kendo and Monoma require our class to gather together for a group discussion.", Ibara had introduced herself and then proceeded to lean to Arthur to whisper to him what was next for Class 1-B.
"Alright then, see you chumps next game.", said Arthur as he left with Ibara to regroup their class.
Once the Jersey teen left their group, Ochako continued to comment on how the race went. She complimented Izuku for his reckless but genius plan to launch all the way to the finish line. This made Midoriya flushed a little at being complimented by a girl as he hides his face in his arms. The scene made Doom roll his eyes as Eddie kept eating his hotdogs. Soon all the other students arrived inside of the stadium, some more exhausted than others. Once all had assembled, Midnight returned to the platform for her next proclamation.
"Alright everyone, it's time to check the results of the race.", announced Midnight with a crack of her whip. The billboard sized screens showed everyone in order of completion. Safe to say that the rest of the festival is going to be decided on the top ten.
Arthur Parks, first place. Victor von Doom, second place. Izuku Midoriya, third place. Eddie Brock, fourth place. Shoto Todoroki, fifth place. Katsuki Bakugo, sixth place. Ibara Shiozaki, seventh place. Juzo Honenuki, eighth place. Tenya Iida, ninth place. Fumikage Tokoyami, tenth place.
So on and so forth, it seems the majority of the top winners are the hero course students. With the exception of Shinzo Hitoshi, all other courses have been removed from participating in the next main event. Much to the surprise of the hero course, two of their own have been removed from participating. Following Mei Hatsumei at being below 42nd place, Manga Fukidashi and Yuga Aoyama were eliminated from any further competitions.
For Mei, she sighed in disappointment. Guess she'll have to show off her babies some other times. For Manga, he had the crying face emoji in Japanese kanji on his manga page face. Aoyama had a calm but plastered look on his face as he struggled to control his stomach. But this time he won't be sparkling for the cameras for the rest of the day.
… Somei Junior High, Basketball court …
A flurry of squeaks of shoes hitting the polished floor is all that rings throughout the court as all the middle school students witnessed what was impossible. A three on one basketball game between the three best players of the sport and the new foreign kid. And somehow, the gaijin was winning by a slight lead.
It was supposed to be a quick and easy game. The three of them versus the new guy. They laughed when the foreigner said he only ever played hockey for a sport. It showed if his lackluster skill in basketball was any indication. He only got basic understanding from what feather head nerd told him. After that quick lesson, it would be a first to three with the Canadian getting none. It was going like that until their second point, but the little man managed to get the ball and stalled them til they started to lose breath. He then went for his point and scored his first. That round then determined the rest of the game.
Logan was his name and Somei Basketball Captain, Orenkido, was starting to hate it. Fourth round was he and his two lieutenants would use their typical tactic using their quirks very hiddenly. But somehow, the Canadian boy managed to stay away from them whenever they were about to. It was like nothing was tiring him and he was starting to learn their moves as well. After another game of keep away, he made another throw and scored his second point. The three players were getting pissed now and tried again with their hidden cheat tactic. But the young Canadian did the sneakiest thing.
As soon as one of the athletes were about to use his quirk, Logan quickly dribbled to an angle and bait the cheater into accidentally revealing his quirk. It could be seen that his fingers had extended to reach for the ball. Caught by all those watching, the ref of the small game pulled his whistle to pull the player. Cussing his luck, Orenkido watched as one of his lieutenants was booed off the court. Great, they were losing the game and their credibility.
Already getting sick of the game, Logan committed the last insult by going for the long throw. The ball soared over half the court and dunked through the hoop. The crowd that assembled to see this game were chatting up a storm and creating new gossip that will no doubt be spread like a plague. Some said their underestimations toward the young Canadian and now believe the tale that he did defeat the Kurai Hawks single handedly. Others were letting out their disgusts on the false sportsmanship of the basketball elites of their school.
Once that ball made the hoop, the crowd surprisingly cheered for their foreign student as said Foreigner let out a snort at the shift of tone now. Take one badass thing and everybody's with ya. As Logan rolled his shoulders, he shifted his eyes over to where Yokuto was and saw him clapping enthusiastically for him. The Canadian boy was about to walk over to his sole friend in school, but unknown to him Orenkido in frustration lost his cool and threw the basketball in his direction. The ball was imbued with some kind propelling force from Orenkido's quirk. Yokuto saw this and immediately warned Logan.
"Logan, watch out!", cried Yokuto with alertness. Much to his surprise and the crowd that saw the foul play, Logan didn't turn and merely extended his right arm at the incoming ball. As soon as the rubber made contact with his knuckles, three intimidating bone claws popped out and stabbed through the ball. This silenced everyone and even made Yokuto jolt a little. He still wasn't used to seeing Logan's claws. The Canadian boy then flicks the ruined ball off his claws and turns his head to let out a small snarl at Orenkido. The latter actually took a step back at the foreigner's feralness.
"Like I said bub, I'm a hockey man. Play this dumb game without me.", said Logan as he walked to Yokuto and patted his friend's shoulder.
"Let's go bub, I'm hungry and I want to see that race.", said Logan as he walked ahead of Yokuto.
"How about Yakisoba? There's a stall near the viewing center. My treat for the win.", offered Yokuto with a smile as caught up with Logan.
"Well since you're offering, I could go for three plates worths.", chuckled Logan as he and Yokuto walked out of the court. As far as the young Howlette knew, he didn't care that his own street cred had grown or that he made enemies with one third of the Sport Club Triad or that hidden somewhere he had a secret observer. Hiding inside the bleachers, Kibikozo, the boy that went up to play against the basketball club before the Canadian did. He had recorded the whole game between Logan and Orenkido's team on his video camera. Little did the young Canadian know that he would make a future ally with the school's local content creator plus blogger.
