Chapter 4: Hero Training
Hero Training
This school is weird. Kaine thought as yawned and walked into homeroom. He noticed an extra desk was added and he took it. So, let me get this straight. Because yesterday was just introductions we didn't actually have class? As Kaine had found out, how things work at the school is that after homeroom class the students will attend normal classes until around noon or so where they will eat lunch (obviously). After that the Hero courses will then attend their Hero class and these usually change around from day to day. Sometimes they are with their homeroom teacher, sometimes they are with other pro heroes. That's how things work...Except on the first day, for some reason? Kaine thought with a yawn again.
"Oh hey," Kaine looked up to see Kendo sitting down at her desk, a smile on her face, "I see you were brave enough to show your face again after what happened yesterday." she giggled, "But in all seriousness, don't be so down on yourself. Tokage is really good, and a recommended student, so you did really well when you look at it that way."
"I know, I've been told." Kaine groaned, "I'm...I'm still kicking myself that I didn't think of just webbing her to the ground." he gripped his head and slammed it against his desk several times.
Kendo gave a sweet smile and pat Kaine on his back, "Live and learn, Yoshida. Next time just actually fight, huh?"
"Alright, everybody in your seats." Kan said as he walked in. To his surprise all of 1-B was seated, "Wow, on the second day? You all are fast learners. You made a mistake though." the class muttered amongst themselves confused, "With you impressing me this early the only way left to go is down." Kan cleared his throat, "That's a joke. I'm sure you all will continue to surprise me. Now, to the first order of business," Kan grabbed a pen and began to write on the white board, "Today, before you head to your general education classes, I'd like for us to pick class representatives." the class seemed relieved that they would be able to do something so normal, but also confused. "Yes, I know it's difficult to choose so early. but I'd like us to get on the ball."
Kendo was quick to raise her hand, "But, Sensei, how are we supposed to choose? We barely know anyone, like you said."
"Why not just choose the two who made it in on recommendations?" Tetsutetsu suggested.
"EEEEEENG, No!" Setsuna made a beeping noise while crossing her arms.
"Yeah, I'm not much for leadership stuff either." Juzo replied.
"Let's just split the class into two camps." Kaine suggested. All the eyes were on him and he gulped from the sudden pressure, "Er...what I mean is, why don't we have the girls pick a representative and the boys pick one. Then we pick the president from there. We spent more time in opposite cliques the other day, and we aren't completely comfortable around each other. This way we have a voice for both sides."
The class was silent at Kaine's suggestion, which just made him feel uneasy about his suggestions. C'mon, say something! "That's actually not a bad idea." Shishida stated, "Yes, because we would be more comfortable with those we identify with more. Furthermore, some of us would come off a little brashly to the girls in class so it only makes sense that we-"
"We get it, dude. Relax." Tsuburaba interrupted, "Yoshida, get over here. Let's pick out a representative."
The class split up between the two sexes and got to picking representatives. On the girls side it was rather easy, Setsuna didn't want any part of it, so that meant the only other logical candidate was Kendo since she was the only other one that really had enough confidence to talk to the other class members, also she just had that 'big sisterly' vibe about her.
For the boys it was a little bit more difficult. The choice was between Shishida and Shoda, the two boys who seemed to be the most level headed as well as the most intelligent that actually felt comfortable leading others. However, that issue didn't help much as the boys had an even number, and both boys got an equal amount of votes. "Okay, I'm not going to sit here forever while we keep coming up as a tie." Kamakiri complained. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin, "Heads it's Shoda, tails it's Shishida." He flipped the coin and the group watched as it bounced off the desk and rolled along the ground by the girls. "Well? What is it?"
"Heads!" Setsuna yelled out.
"There we go! Issue solved!" Kamakiri yelled out before crossing his arms in frustration.
Kendo and Shoda stood in front of the class, the latter looking kind of nervous. Kan yawned, "Okay, so of these two who will be the rep-"
"KENDO." the the boys said in unison.
Shindo cocked an eyebrow, "Huh? Guys?"
"Sorry, Shindo." Tetsutetsu apologized, "Don't take it personally, but we were always going to choose one of the girls over us. I hope you understand."
"Cute girls will always prevail!" Tsuburaba shouted out.
Kendo hung her head and face palmed, "I don't like the idea that I got chosen because I'm a girl." she sighed.
Kaine aired out his collar, Oh geez, now I feel bad.
Kaine made it his goal, he had to pay more attention in his general education classes. And unlike middle school there is no worry to him about standing out or being a target of some sort of harassment. Here, everyone seemed to get it. You tried your best at all times, and if you didn't then what was even the point? The goal was to continuously better yourself so you could be a great hero by the time you graduated, so why would you willingly slack off?
Most of the classes didn't interest Kaine that much, especially English...mostly because he was fluent. However, he always took an interest in History, so he was pretty happy when that was the last class he had before lunch. History just always came naturally to Kaine, maybe it was because of the interesting heroes, or the way society changed over the years, he wasn't sure. Maybe it was because if he learned about those times he could better understand people, feel some sort of connection to them.
By lunch time Kaine was in line to get his food...realizing he left his money at home. Well, that just my luck isn't it? Kaine thought with a groan, I was going to use this time to calm my nerves before hero classes. Kaine looked over to the girls sitting at a table, talking about something. Setsuna was recommended...she outsmarted me pretty easily. I suppose right now asking for pointers is probably the best thing. Especially for the next time I have to embarrass myself.
Kaine walked over to the table where the girls were sitting, immediately he was greeted by Setsuna, "Oh hey, what's up Kaine! Come to take back your pride after I stole if from you yesterday?"
"Hi, uh...no." Kaine replied, "Look, I heard you were recommended. So obviously you have some sort of skill, one I don't have. So...how do you do it? Like, when we were fighting you didn't seem to flinch."
Setsuna blinked a few times before repeatedly patting Kaine on the back, "Oh, you just want to know how to get some confidence!" she laughed.
Across the way, where the boys were sitting, Tetsutetsu spit out his drink at surprise, "GUYS!" he shouted out, "Look, Kaine just went and sat down by the girls! Can he do that? Is that allowed?"
Tsuburaba cupped his chin and nodded, "Yes, yes. It seems that Yoshida is much more of a ladies man than we assumed." he clenched his fist and frowned, "Plus he totally got to hold Tokage for like five minutes! I'm super jealous of him!"
"Guys," Shido sighed, "I-Isn't more likely that maybe Yoshida is asking Tokage what he could improve on from yesterday? I mean, he doesn't really come off as someone who goes after ladies on the whim."
"It's probably because he's so tall! Chicks dig tall guys!" Tsuburaba continued, ignoring Shido.
Back with Kaine and the girls, Setsuna wrapped her arm around his neck and smirked, "You see Kaine, the secret to having intense confidence is to not think too much about something." she emphasized her point by pulling Kaine into a tighter grip making him blush, "See, you're thinking too much about this, you're getting nervous. Who cares? It doesn't mean anything." she laughed, "Same thing in a fight. You face you're opponent and you have to think quick, but you can't over think." she detached her other hand and flicked Kaine in the head before reattaching it, "Like how you overanalyzed our spar which lead to you taking a beating."
"Yeah, Yoshida," Kendo started, "You may be strong, but eventually you'll get worn down. Speaking of," she pointed to Kaine's lack of food tray, "You aren't getting something to eat? You're gonna need the energy.
"Not hungry." Kaine lied, with a shake of his hands.
Kendo rolled her eyes and pulled a protein bar from her bag, "Regardless, you need at least something right? Besides, you said your webs need protein to form." Kaine hesitated before taking the bar, "Good!" Kendo smiled, "Now, I must say, Yoshida, I'm really impressed at you being so eager to learn from your mistakes. Most boys are too thick headed to admit when they did something wrong." she and the other girls let out a light laugh.
When Kaine and the others got to Hero class, they were surprised (and also not at the same time) that they were going to continue where they left off from the day before by having sparring matches. Like before, Kan would 'randomly' choose two individuals and place them up against each other in a 1v1, while the others will sit back and analyze the fight while taking into account the two's weaknesses and strengths. Kaine and Setsuna already had their spar the day before, obviously, so they will sit back today.
Without even asking, Setsuna took it upon herself to stick by Kaine and give him pointers for the next time he's up in a fight as well as make sure he's paying attention. The first duo up to fight is Monoma and Shiozaki. "Alright Kaine-y, who here has the advantage?" Setsuna asked with a smug grin.
Kaine thought back to the day before and remembered their quirks, "Well...Monoma can copy quirks if he touches the other person...but that's assuming he touches them. And I don't think Shiozaki's hair is technically a part of her body. So I guess it all comes to technicality." Setsuna nodded her head with a smile and rotated her wrist, motioning for Kaine to continue, "But as of right now, Shiozaki has a clear and obvious advantage. Hell, if she reacts quickly she could beat him in one go." Sure enough, Kaine seemed right on the money as it took maybe thirty seconds for Shiozaki to hold Monoma in her vines and incapacitate him.
The 1-B students continued their sparring matches. Some faring well against each other, others not so much, but that could be chalked up bad match ups. However, there was one problem. "Um, Sensei?" Kendo raised her hand, "I didn't get a partner. And everyone else has gone."
"I know," Kan replied, "That was intentional. How confident are you in your martial arts skills, Kendo?"
"Fairly." Kendo replied with a nod.
"Good, Kaine. Kendo. You two are up." Kan ordered as he marked something down on his notepad.
Kaine looked around and cocked an eyebrow in confusion, "What, me? I already fought Tokage though?"
Kan scoffed, "Yeah, and you've shown you need the most help as you never threw a punch, took too long to react to anything, and have shown to be scared of girls." the class chuckled at Kaine's expense.
"Not scared." Kaine mumbled.
Kaine and Kendo stepped into the field and the two faced each other. Okay, just remember the scolding from yesterday...and the pain...ESPECIALLY the pain. Kaine shuddered. I can take her on. Her quirk is Big Fist, right? Both of us are close ranged and I have a mobility advantage. "Hey, no hard feelings when I beat you, right?" Kendo asked with a smirk.
"Don't get cocky," Kaine replied, "I'm not the same man as I was yesterday. I'm more determined and I have...a very acute memory of what could happen if I lose." Kaine had a thousand-yard stare while looked to the ground, horror flashbacks of the day before. He shuddered and rolled his shoulders, "Besides, I have boxing training. So I have the advantage if I get close enough."
Kendo rolled her eyes and smirked, "You have to throw a punch first." she did a few light stretches before getting in a fighting stance. Kaine nodded, punched his fists together a few times and did the same. Once again, Kaine didn't make the first move, he wanted to see how Kendo would attack and then he'd try to work his way up from there. But, just like Setsuna, Kendo approached Kaine and attacked without the use of her quirk, sending several jabs and kicks his way. Kaine blocked the shots aimed at his head, but he took the body blows head-on.
"Oh for the love of-" Kan rubbed his temples in frustration, "Yoshida you better make a move before Kendo actually gets serious." he warned.
"Hold on! I'm strategizing!" Kaine yelled out. He let his guard down...again, and gave Kendo an opening to punch him across the jaw. "Okay...ow." Kendo only smirked. Kaine formed a fist and sent a right jab to Kendo's stomach, making her collapse to her knees. Kaine smiled as he landed a punch...against a girl, Hm. Yeah, still doesn't feel right. Kaine snapped out of his thoughts as he heard light sobs coming Kendo. "Uh...Kendo? You okay there?"
"God, that was so awful. I can't believe you just hit a girl!" Kendo cried. Kaine gripped his hair and felt instant remorse. Oh my God, what have I done? Did I put way too much force behind the punch? Kaine walked towards Kendo to help her up, but when he stood over her he heard her sobs turn to laughter, "You really are too nice." she chuckled. Suddenly, Kaine saw Kendo go for an uppercut. He tried to defend himself, but she turned her fist into the size of a small boulder at the last second and sent him flying through the air.
"Yeah! Nice attack, Kendo!" many students cheered.
Kan sighed and wiped his face with his hand. The kid just fell for the most obvious bait. We've established you're weaknesses Yoshida! "Yoshida, pull your head out your ass!" Kan yelled out.
"Okay...I admit, I fell for that one!" Kaine yelled out, still flying through the air. He finally snapped out of it as he corrected his body so he'd stop needlessly flipping through the air. He shot two weblines down to the ground and launched himself downward. Kaine somersaulted in the air a few times before punching down. Kendo avoided the attack and watched as Kaine made a crater in the ground. Oh, he is strong when he wants to. Kendo thought in surprise. Kaine got up and tried to throw another punch, but was blocked by Kendo's fist. "You know, fighting against you gives me weird nostalgia from when I was like five."
"What?" Kendo asked as she shrunk her hand to regular size so she could get in close and perform a judo throw over her shoulder. Kaine landed on his back with a hard thud and Kendo followed up by trying to slam down on him with a hammer punch, making her fist big as she began to slam down.
Kaine held up his hands and stopped her fist from slamming into him. He then pushed up, pushing her fist away and making Kendo lose balance and move backwards slightly. Kaine jumped to his feet and got back in a fighting stance, "It's just...when I was younger I used to have this super retro Nintendo system, and there was this one game called Smash Brothers, anyways, in the arcade mode the final boss was a giant white glove called Master Hand. So, you kinda have a lot in common."
Kendo shook her head and cocked and eyebrow in confusion, "What?"
"Nevermind." Okay, she can grow and shrink her hand a lot faster than I thought. So her mobility is a little better than initially believed. Kaine widened his stance and clenched his fists tighter, If I wait for her to make the first move...I can counter and attack from her unguarded side when she's close. Sure enough, Kendo moved forward first, acting as if she was going left before faking and attacking from the right. Kaine held up his left hand and blocked the punch then tried to counter with a hook, however, he felt a punch to his gut that knocked the wind out of him. Looking down, Kaine saw Kendo had increased the size of her other fist as she punched him. Wait, so it isn't 'Big Fist' but 'Big Fists,' plural?
"You...cheated." Kaine groaned, "You didn't say you could increase both your fists."
"You didn't ask." Kendo replied with a cheeky smile.
"Kaine!" Tetsutetsu shouted out, "You can totally win this! Don't worry about hurting her! We are at school, we have Recovery Girl! Break a bone if you have to!"
"Your webs are also still a viable weapon you can use. You don't have to engage in close quarters combat if you don't have to." Kuroiro added, "Remember, we were supposed to use the weaknesses of our opponents against them, and both times you've been up you've been playing into their hands."
Kaine blinked a few times before slamming the palm of his hand against his face, "Dammit, again!?" Kaine yelled out in English. Okay think! Close quarters isn't working out the way I planned it to. I could always use my webbing to web her hands to her body, that could buy me time. Kaine quickly rolled to the side to avoid a punch from Kendo. If I web her feet together I could easily- "Damn!" Kaine flipped over Kendo's head to avoid a massive backhand, the force of which almost made Kendo fall over from losing control of her hand.
"Hey! Like, don't think too hard. Just do something and go from there. Stratagies are good, but when they aren't working you need to improvise!" Setsuna yelled out.
Kaine took a deep breath and nodded. He charged Kendo at full speed. He held up his right hand and fired web balls. Some of them hitting Kendo in areas that didn't matter like her shoulder, her thigh and the right side of her stomach. However, he did manage to attach a web ball to her wrist which stuck her left hand to her stomach and he was able to blind her by webbing her eyes. Kaine then jumped up and went for a dropkick. Kendo, while blinded, tried her best to defend herself and grew her free hand to shield her the best it could. Kaine's dropkick landed, but he ened up breaking Kendo's ring finger, making her cry out in pain.
Kendo grew her other hand and the webbing ripped from the pressure, letting her free. She took a quick moment to rub her hand which was already turning purple from the pain. "Probably should have saved the 'you hit a girl' bit until now." she chuckled. Before she could get ready again, Kaine was already by her. Using what he felt, Kaine tried to imitate Kendo's judo throw. When she landed on her back he webbed her to the ground.
Kaine took a few steps back before turning to the group of students and cheering. "Should we tell him?" Shoda asked as he and the other students stood in silence.
"No, hold on, this might be funny." Awase replied with a smirk.
"What?" Kaine asked, "C'mon guys I won! This is kinda awesome for me. I've never done something like this before." Kaine soon got his answer for lack of applause when he felt something grip around his entire body. Turning his head back as far as he could he saw Kendo had gripped his body with both her big hands. "H-Hey Kendo...um...no hard feelings?" he asked nervously.
"Hey, Yoshida." Kendo greeted back with a slight smirk, "None at all." she then lifted Kaine up and slammed him headfirst into the ground. Kendo let go of her grip of Kaine and went back to trying to soothe her broken finger.
Kan sighed, "Yoshida, do you know what you did wrong?"
"I...took my eyes off my opponent?" he replied.
"Good, seems you don't have a concussion if you can figure out your mistakes." Kan nodded. "Take this as a learning experience for tomorrow. You'll have battle training tomorrow, so get any injuries you have healed up." Kan told his class, "Yoshida, maybe make some mental notes. Oh...and I'm sure you've noticed we have an odd number of students. You are the one I've deemed needs the most help. So you'll be pulling double duty tomorrow."
Kaine rubbed his head and cocked an eyebrow, "Um...double duty for what?"
"You'll see. Class dismissed." With that, Kan waved and the students were free to leave for the day. Happy Aizawa? I'm working the kid to the bone for you. He'll show the 1-A students his mettle during the festival. I guarantee it.
Kaine went home that night feeling pretty bad about the fact he broke Kendo's finger. He knows that that is a part of the hero course, some people get hurt no biggie, but it just went against every fiber in his being to intentionally hurt someone like that. She seemed fine afterwards but...man, breaking a bone has to hurt, right? he thought. "LOOK OUT KID!" Kaine was snapped to attention by a yelling voice. He looked up to see some sort of debris following towards him Kaine jumped backward and just narrowly avoided becoming sidewalk art.
"Holy shit!" Kaine yelled in English. He looked up to see the building that was supposed to be demolished to make way for...whatever they were going to build in its place. The one where he saw the construction workers first entering in the day before.
"God dammit!" some man ran out from inside the construction zone, "You're not hurt are you?" the man was old, very old. He was also short. Kaine shook his head at the question and the man took a breath of relief, "Good, the last thing we need is a lawsuit in our hands." the man shook his head, "The hell are you doing out here, kid?" he asked.
"Uh...I live this way." Kaine replied.
"No kidding?" the man rubbed his head and held out his hand, "Where're my manners. Name's Kurama, I run this site."
"Kaine." Kaine and the man shook hands and nodded to each other, "The hell is going here anyways? Can't imagine anything but the abandoned buildings."
"Can't say much. But we are replacing the old condemned building with a new one. An affordable housing complex, if you will. One run by the city." the man explained.
Now Kaine was the one shaking his head, "Sounds too good to be true. City has ignored this side of it for decades, what's changed?"
"Eh, you know how it is. Someone out there wanted to see this place get better." Kaine didn't say anything more after that, instead he continued home so he could get some rest for the next day. Meanwhile, the man let out another sigh of relief and wiped the sweat from his forehead. "Hey, extend the boundary of the construction, almost had someone die over here. Last thing we need is for people to start investigating what's going on."
"You got it, boss." a voice replied on the walkie-talkie. Kurama looked both ways before going back into the construction zone and locking the gate behind him.
The next day, 1-B was told they would have Battle Training. This meant going to the Foundational Hero Studies class. The room looked like any other, though Kaine did notice it was a little bigger than 1-B homeroom. Wait...I wasn't paying attention, who runs this class again? "HELLO, STUDENTS!" the class jumped in surprise then gasped in awe as they saw the Number One pro hero enter the classroom. All Might, the symbol of peace he was, showed up exactly how the students always saw him on tv, wearing his blue, white, and red spandex as well as a smile that seemed forever plastered on his face. "Greetings class 1-B, are you as excited as I am? Today we will be doing Battle Trials."
The students were listening, but at the same time still a little starstruck at the sight of All Might, "Yo, Kaine do you see who that is, man?" Tetsutetsu said as he repeatedly shook Kaine back and forth by the collar, "That's All Might, man! The greatest hero of all time! Can you believe he's actually teaching here?"
All Might rubbed the back of his neck and gave a slight chuckle, "I see you all are an excitable bunch. I suppose you really aren't so different from Class A." he coughed, "Anyways, Vlad King tells me that you all have had basic 1v1 spars already. That's good! That means you know what it's like to go against an enemy combatant. Today you are going to take what you've learned and apply it in a more serious scenario. I'll explain in further detail at City Zone G. Until then," All Might pushed a button and several automatic drawers popped out of walls with numbers indicated on them, "We have the gear you all sent to us ready for you to use!" All Might said proudly, "Now get dressed and meet me at the training zone!"
Just like the other students, Kaine walked over to his case and opened it. He gulped from the sight, The suit looks even better than I ever imagined. Kaine thought with a large smile starting to cover his face. The students took their costumes and they went to the locker rooms to get changed and ready for the training.
After everyone had gotten their costumes on, Kaine and the others walked through a large tunnel that led them to City Zone G, the one that happens to be based off The Sinkhole. Still can't leave this place!? Kaine thought with a groan. Kaine was quite proud of his costume, how it felt and how it looked. However, it was a little tighter in the groin than he anticipated, which may have to do with the protector.
But not just his costume, Kaine was digging everybody elses' costumes too! It was rather interesting for him to see people in costume, it was exciting for some reason. Starting with Awase, his costume consisted of a burgundy, baggy, full body suit, its collar passing his chin. He wore shoulder pads and a bag on his belt in which he keeps various items, including blocks of wood and metal, likely to help wirg his quiek. He also switched out his usual zig-zagged headband for a striped one.
Kaibara appears to be wearing a dark-colored windbreaker with grey, drill patterned rings around the base of the neck and arms. Over this, he wears a large white trench coat and gloves. The 'gloves' just being finger coverings with the same drill pattern. Actually looks stylish though. Kaine thought with a nod.
Kamakiri wore a large dark green cloak, plain black trousers and boots. He has a mask around his eyes and a zig-zag pattern on his shirt.
Kuroiro wore an all black outfit with only silver bracers of some kind and gray shoes. Actually, he scared Kaine when they were walking out of the tunnel because he couldn't see the shadow teen.
Kendo wore a turquoise knee-lengthqipao, over which she has a black double-breastedcorset, ending just below her breasts. She also sports black short pants under the qipao. For accessories, she wears a loose brown utility belt around her hips with a satchel attached at the back, a thin blackdomino maskaround her eyes and white-heeled navy blue boots with wide vamps that reach down to her toes, filled in with white slips.
Kodai wore a simple red bodysuit with a white-collar trim, a matching "V" pattern running over her chest and around her upper arms, which also includes a short white skirt with a red design at the front, dipping so it follows the one in her chest. She wore plain vambraces, as well as a hat which resembles the front of a baseball cap, colored red with white U-shaped lines around the sides, with a metal piece resembling a fin attached at the back of the strap around her head.
She has a belt at her waist and straps around her shoulders, what appears to be a yellow oval-shaped gemstone set between them on her chest, each adorned with a small pouch...though Kaine wasn't exactly sure what was in the pouches.
Komori wore a red turtleneck dress with long sleeves and furred cuffs, which is decorated with a white polkadot pattern, matching the one on her mushroom cap-shaped hat. She wore pale pink knee-high boots with thick tan soles and frilled shafts, patterned the same as her dress, and around her waist is a dark brown belt with a large golden buckle. Altogether, her costume bears a strong resemblance to a mushroom. Because of her quirk! Kaine thought in realization.
Shiozaki was a surprise as she wore a plaine white robe and black knee-high boots. It was simple...but it made her look like a goddess described by ancient civilizations.
Shishida's costume didn't surprise him as it was a regular pair of pants, a shirt collar with no shirt and a pair of stylized goggles in place of his regular glasses. It seemed fitting, given his quirk.
Shoda, however, did surprise Kaine as he wore a black, high-collared suit with a trim of white pale lines around its collar and hem, and a similar pattern over his torso and shoulders, along with plain black pants and white knee-high boots. A bluescouter-looking device was worn over his left eye, and he has a connected radar on the back of one of his gloved hands. Kaine thought it looked ridiculous himself...but he didn't want to be rude, so he just didn't say anything.
Pony wore a horse-themed, matching her appearance andquirk. She wears a horsehalter around her head with a lead rope dangling from the back, and her outfit resembles ajockeyuniform, consisting of an orange skin-tight shirt with paler markings around her chest and stomach, with matching-colored pants, along with a pair of fingerless gloves. She wears belts secured around her collarbone, biceps, and lower torso, and boots that not only guard her hooves but also havestirrups attached on either side. The weirdest thing is that on her back there looked to be a small...pad of sorts, almost like a saddle. She...she doesn't expect to carry people does she? Kaine thought, Plus, could someone as small and cute as her even carry someone larger than a medium sized dog? Like a corgi? Or a beagle? Kaine had a large grin plastered on his face, thankful he had a mask to hide it.
Tsuburaba's costume was the most plain looking to Kaine as he wore a simple light blue jacket, with pale pants, a black shirt underneath, and he wears large brown boots. On the bright side he's inconspicuous. So he can be hidden in plain sight. Kain thought.
Tetsutetsu wore a dark green jumpsuit, cut off just below his chest, with some small, silver-rimmed holes in the lower section of his baggy pants and black boots with metal soles, heels, and front plating. He has steel straps over his shoulders and under his arms, made up of multiple pieces, which connect at a red oval in the center of his chest, with two thinner bands around his biceps and a small plate on either side of his waist. He wears a metal jaw-guard around his face not connected over his nose or around his chin, with the letters 'Fe,' likely a reference to the periodic table, stamped on a plate on each side of his face.
Setsuna wore a purple, scaly mask over her eyes, a simple bodysuit with a matching design and black knee-high boots. The costume itself looking kinda tight and leaving little to the imagination. Actually, the costume made Kaine self-conscious because it made him wonder if his suit looked as tight. She also wears finger gloves with orange, three-piece wrist-guards, and a belt around her waist with what looks to be a jewel embedded into the center.
Manga's costume was kinda 'out there' in terms of design as he wore a blue shirt with red sleeves and pants covered by a series of ink bottle-like pieces of armor around his torso and legs, black on his torso and white on his legs. He also wore a belt with manga panels, elbow under-length gloves, and his mask resembles a manga page template.Well...at least he's keeping real to his name. Kaine thought.
Juzo definitely had the most complex looking costume, as he had a set of orange armor over the top and a mask that covers the face. His helmet is round and elliptical, tinted black with orange lines supporting the sides. The helmet does not cover his entire head; some tufts of hair around the back of his head and chin are still visible. Juzo's helmet is also equipped with a retractable snorkel which Kaine can only guess is for when he swims through softened areas. His chest plate is made up of three pieces which are held on by two thick metal straps going over his shoulders, along with a jewel-shaped plate supported between them. He wears orange vambraces and plates placed over his thighs, calves and upper arms. He also sports a pair of elevated, green and orange boots with pipe-like shafts on his feet, white gloves on his hands, and white kneepads.
Kojiro had a simpler outfit, wearing a yellow, slightly baggy suit. Around his neck, wrists, and waist, he wears orange circular accessories which resemble the lower part of the cap of a bottle of glue, and around his ankles slightly thinner, taller versions of these.
Monoma wore a black, double-breasted tuxedo with two long tails reaching almost down to his ankles. Three clocks hang on one of two belts around his waist, presumably to help him keep track of hisquirt's time limit, and he leaves his shirt collar upturned, a blue and black dotted tie done up around his neck. A left breast pocket can be found on his tuxedo, a small blue handkerchief sticking out. Both his tailcoat and his pants are plain black, with the exception of the cuffs of his sleeves and the inner-facing sides of his tails, and his shoes are white with a simple design. I see his costume is just like hime...kind of obnoxious. Kaine chuckled.
Reiko wore a pale purple, knee-length kimono with a white, furred collar, three dark straps around her waist, black knee-high socks, and a black mask that covers her face from the bridge of her nose down. Strangely enough, despite her appearance and attitude, she looked more ninja-like than ghost-like.
Finally, there was Hiryu Rin who wore white knee-high boots, a black bodysuit with yellow clouds across the torso and gets progressively baggier as it travels downward. He has a red belt tied around his waist with pouches on the side, a large collar across his chin, and he also wears large yellow gauntlets and a visor on his head.
"Yo, Kaine!" Tetsutetsu called as he wrapped his arm around Kaine's neck, "I almost didn't realize it was you, but I just had to count the three size monsters here and realize you were the odd man out! Dig the suit man, really liking the red, looks manly as hell!" be complimented as he repeatedly patted Kain on the chest, "Don't you think it looks a little scary though? Like, the red eyes are giving some crazy vibes."
"Uh...it's to scare villains." Kaine said sheepishly.
Tetsutetsu blinked a few times before nodding in understanding, "Ooooooh, the psychological game. That's not bad."
"WELCOME STUDENTS!" All Might yelled out, "Come forth, stick your hand in the box and draw lots!" he held out a cardboard box with 'Lots' written on it. "You will split up into ten teams of two and then will be randomly chosen to go against another team. One team will be the 'Heroes' and the other the 'Villains'. The villains will defend a dangerous bomb while the heroes will attempt to take them out or take out the bomb."
Kaine was the last to take a lot, but when he stuck his hand in the box he realized there was nothing there. "Um...All Might? There's no more lots for me to take."
"Ah, young Yoshida!" All Might laughed, "Yes, Vlad King has a special plan for you. You will go last...twice." Kaine slumped his shoulders, already feeling tired, "After the first matches are done I will pick a student who I think needs extra training and put them on your Hero team, then I will pick three random students to be on the Villain team. Then, I will pick someone who I think needs more training to join you on the Villain team, then pick another three students for the hero team."
Kendo cupped her chin in thought, "So...that means,"
"The eight worst performing students," Shoda continued.
"Will have to do this twice with me." Kaine ended.
The group was silent before Kaine felt a massive competitive aura sweep over 1-B, "I cannot be in the bottom eight." the class said in unison.
All Might kept his smile but...That...isn't exactly what I said though. he thought.
Chapter 5: Hero Training Part 2
Hero Training Part 2
"In this exercise, the groups will be divided into two two-man teams." All Might explained, "Heroes and Villains. As stated before, the Villains will shack themselves up in that large building." All Might pointed to a five story tall building. Kaine let out a snort as the building they were using is a replica of the one that is currently being torn down. "The villains will be defending a 'nuclear bomb' and it is up to the grand heroes to stop them. The heroes have to either capture the villains or get to the bomb core before time runs out. Villains have to either capture the heroes or hold out until time is up, understand?" The students nodded as they finished picking lots and pairing together.
"Is everybody paired up?" All Might asked as Class 1-B. The students got into their groups as they eagerly awaited who'd they be facing. In Group 1 was Manga Fukidashi and Nirengeki Shoda. Interesting team up. Could work out well if they are put on offense. Defensively...well, they'd probably have to rely on Manga. Kaine thought; Group 2 was Itsuka Kendo and Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu. Solid team. Kaine nodded, Absolute powerhouse. May be too overloaded on power, but Kendo is smart, I voted her to be class prez on more than just her being a cute girl; Group 3 was Reiko Yanagi and Kojiro Bondo. That may actually be the best team. Kaine gulped, Great balance of offense and defense. Technically Reiko can use her quirk to throw an opponent as long as they aren't someone...well, someone like Kojiro; Group 4 was Jurota Shishida and Yosetsu Awase; Group 5 Togaru Kamakiri and Hiryu Rin; Group 6 Kosei Tsuburaba and Juzo Honenuki. If they win, Juzo will be the one leading, I feel pretty confident in that; Group 7 Pony Tsunotori and Sen Kaibara; Group 8 Neito Monama and Ibara Shiozaki. Ha! That's funny, yesterday they were enemy combatants, today they are allies. Life has a nice sense of humor when it wants to; Group 9 was Setsuna Tokage and Shihai Kuroiro; and finally, Group 10 was Kinoko Komori and Yui Kodai.
"Great!" All Might cheered out, "Now, for the rounds we will have Group 9 versus Group 6! Group 6, you'll be the villains do your best; Group 1 versus Group 7, Group 1 you'll be the villains; Group 10 will go against Group 3 with Group 3 being the villains; Group 2 against Group 4 with Group 2 being the villains; Finally is Group 5 against Group 8 with group 8 being the villains. Groups 9 and 6, you're up first! Villains, you'll get five minutes to prepare before the heroes barge in and try to stop you. The rest of you come with me, we'll watch the events unfold from the buildings basement!"
Kaine and the other students followed All Might to the basement of the large building. As they walked through it Kaine took notes as to how the building DIDN'T look like it had to be condemned. Well, I guess you can't have a fake building falling apart on your students now, can you? Kaine thought with a shrug. In the basement Kaine, as well as the other students, were fairly dumbstruck by the number of monitors that showed every possible corner and hallway of the building and outside the building. "Holy crap, you guys have more surveillance on this building than the government has on the internet." Kaine said with an impressed tone.
"We need to be able to see anything that can happen on the playing field." All Might explains, "That means being able to see every nook and cranny." All Might pushed a button and he tapped on a small microphone that was on the panel connected to the monitors, "Hello heroes, two minutes until the trial begins."
"Two recommended students are against each other," Tetsutetsu said to Kaine, "What team do you think will come out on top?"
Kaine folded her arms and hummed, "Juzo is good if he catches his opponent off guard. So he could booby trap the entrance to the bomb room." he started, "Tsuburaba can harden air...so technically he could barricade the doors too. However...Tokage is good too and Kuroiro is a wild card. Actually, if utilized correctly, Group 9 could end this without coming into contact with Group 6."
"How do you mean, Yoshida?" Kodai asked. Her and the other students curious to what strategy he thought of.
"Kuroiro can hide within anything encased in shadow or black in color, right?" the students nodded, "The heroes are given a map layout of the building, working on 'pre-existing reconiscence data.' Meaning they have a good idea of where the bomb is. Tokage's gloves are black. Tokage can detach parts of her body. So, if they think of the same plan, Kuroiro can hide himself in one of Tokage's gloves, she detaches it and flys it to the bomb holding room secretly, all while receiving directions from Kuroiro who will relay them via communicator that they have."
That's an impressive strategy to come up with in so little time. All Might thought, Vlad King said you needed more experience in combat. But he also praised your ability to strategize. I never anticipated it'd be this good though.
The group looked at the screen and eagerly anticipated the strategies the groups would do. As the students had thought before, Juzo was booby trapping the entrances by making them soft. Tsuburaba, was not barricading the doors like the others anticipated, instead he was making walls around the bomb. Group 9, wasn't exactly doing the strategy Kaine had suggested either. However, Setsuna was smart enough to have Kuroiro hide in the palm of her hand, so she clearly had a similar idea. "Well, can't predict all of them." Kendo said with a shrug.
The group continued watching. Nothing happened for some time until Group 9 got to the door that lead to the bomb. Setsuna took a deep breath before breaking the lower half of her body into several places and quickly launching them into the door, blowing it off. The pieces came and attached to Setsuna as she ran through the door, but immediately she was stuck in the soft ground. Juzo came up from under the soft surface and began to pull Setsuna under. Immediately, Setsuna fired both her hands off as well as split her arms into another forty pieces. Some of the pieces hit Tsuburaba, others ran into the air wall.
Somehow, Setsuna got the idea to have her hand go up top. As she did so, Tsuburaba tried to stop it with his breath, but Setsuna's other hand covered his mouth. Finally, Kuroiro hopped out of her hand and landed on the bomb, ending the match.
"Congratulations! The heroes have won the match!" All Might yelled out through intercoms. "Now, will the groups rejoin everyone else and we'll get the next teams out there for the next exercise."
Groups 6 and 9 walked into the observation room, Juzo and Tsuburaba looked understandably upset, but Setsuna looked down on herself too. "Can't believe I walked into such an obvious trap." she scolded herself quietly.
"Don't worry, you improvised well." Kaine said with a nod.
"Yeah! It was totally cool when you detached your arms and sent them at Tsuburaba!" Tetsutetsu yelled out, "And then Kuroiro hopped out of your hand to get the bomb, you were like a miniature portal. OH! Also, Kaine had this really cool strategy that-MMPH!" Tetsutetsu was cut off when Kendo used her hand to wrap around his face.
"Honestly, Tetsutetsu," Kendo sighed, "They already completed the trial. They probably want to rest before they may or may not get chosen to fight Kaine."
Setsuna smirked and pat Kaine on the shoulder, "Tell us later, it'd be rude for you to give me an unfair advantage before I beat you again."
1-B continued with the Hero Trials. Next up was Group 1 versus Group 7 with Group 1 ending up taking the win. Which was surprising to Kaine because he thought Group 7 had a major advantage, but it seems that when it came to action Pony got a little flustered and made some mistakes. The true take away was that Kaine shouldn't underestimate Shoda. He may be small. but somehow he broke Kaibara's guard thanks to his quirk. Shoda may not have been the best at avoiding attacks, but he definitely had the gusto to hit back, hell, he was strong enough to knock Kaibara out after knocking him through a wall. Note to self, better to dodge Shoda than it is to block. Kaine made mental notes as he watched the matches, knowing he'd likely have to fight a few of his classmates.
Afterwards was Group 10 versus Group 3 with Group 10 winning. The outcome surprised Kaine at first, but then he realized that Kodai's strategy of grabbing a group of Komori's mushrooms before growing them as she threw them at the other team was absolutely genius! It lead to Group 10 having a much easier time than they should have.
Next was Group 2 versus Group 4, with Group 4 taking the win. Kaine had to admit, he was kinda rooting for Kendo and Tetsutetsu to take the win. But despite their major offensive advantage, Group 4 was able to use their unique combo of abilities to pull through. After all, Shishida was a more than formidable opponent, especially when faced against Kendo. Awase was also no pushover, his quirk to anatomically fuse things together. So him fusing Tetsutetsu to the wall was rather easy thanks to Tetsutetsu headstrong and stubborn nature when fighting.
Finally, of course, was Group 5 against Group 8. It was a close battle, but surprisingly Group 8 was the one who took the title. Monoma was quick on his feet, immediately having Shiozaki lend him her quirk. It was funny because Kaine got to see Monoma grow his hair at will, it was pretty interesting. Eventually he was able to get his hands on Hiryu Rin's quirk. Though not a fighter it helped him counter Kamakiri from cutting down Shiozaki's vines.
"Congratulations everyone!" All Might cheered, "To me, all of you are winners!" The students groaned in response, clearly not liking that obvious attempt to patronize them. "Ahem. Yes, well...We aren't done yet! As you know, now one of you lucky few that I feel needs extra training will join Yoshida on the Hero team, and then another three of you to be on the villain team. Now, first off, Yanagi!" Reiko straightened herself in surprise, "You'll be teaming up with Yoshida on the Hero team. You did well, but you were overpowered quickly in your match. Now's your chance to show you're class what you are made of!" All Might gave his signature smile and a thumbs up.
"Y-Yes." Reiko nodded.
"Now," All Might continued, "Tetsutetsu, Tsunotori, and Monoma. The three of you will be the villains."
"Yes." Pony said with a nod.
"Hell yeah!" Tetsutetsu cheered excitedly, "No hard feelings, right Kaine."
"Oh my, not pulling any punches against them are we?" Monoma said with a smug smile, "Looks like I'm going 2 for 2 today."
The two teams left with the Villain Team taking their five minutes to prepare while Reiko and Kaine went over the floor plan of the building. "Um...All Might?" Kendo called out, "You said you would be choosing students you felt needed extra help...but Monoma won his last match. Actually, Monoma did really well in his match. Plus he just went. Why didn't you choose someone else?"
All Might was silent for sometime, "Actually," he finally let out, "...I only said the first names that came to mind. The part about choosing the students that need extra help was a bit of a lie."
"Wait, so any of us could go again?" The rest of Class B asked in unison. "Geez, All Might, at least tell us that in the beginning." Kendo sighed.
Kaine and Reiko stood standing at the entrance overlooking the floor plans. "Looks like we're outnumbered. And they have some strong players on their team." Kaine mentioned. Reiko simply gave an emotionless nod. "Monoma is smart. He'll do one of two things. Either he'll copy Tsunotori's quirk so he can have the range advantage, or he'll copy Tetsutetsu's quirk for a strength and defense buff."
"Why not both?" Reiko asked.
"What?"
"I said, why wouldn't he use both?" Kaine just stared at Reiko, not saying anything, his mask hiding his clearly embarrassed face. "You didn't think of that did you?"
"Give me a break!" Kaine retorted, "I kinda forgot he can hold up to four, okay?" he shook his head, "Regardless, I have a solid strategy. Tetsutetsu can harden his body to steel, if Monoma copies his quirk he'll do the same thing. I'm strong...really strong. I'm confident that I can hurt them. You'll be responsible for Tsunotori. She has range and you have range. I'll break a couple walls when we're in there so you have rubble to help you."
"Got it." Reiko nodded.
"If you get in trouble, just call for me, I'll drop what I'm doing and help you." Kaine finished. The teams were given the start signal and they began the trial.
Before entering the building, Kaine grabbed Reiko's shoulder and stopped her. "Listen, Yanagi, we don't have to go in head first. I have another plan that will allow us to get the drop on them. It's a little risky, and kinda scary, but we could get an easy flank."
Reiko blinked a few times before nodding, "Okay, so what's the plan?"
Kaine scratched the back of his head and chuckled, "Ah, yeah, see...that was a small lie. By a plan, I meant I have two alternatives to a similar plan." he explained, "Either we split off, you take the head on and I take the flank, or we both take the flank." Reiko cocked and eyebrow in confusion, "Look, I'm fine with either, but for the former the trio will be more distracted. However, the latter is probably the safer option. I just wanted to know how you felt about it."
Reiko nodded, "Then...let's go with the second option."
Kaine nodded, "Um...how are you on heights?"
Reiko shrugged, "I'm indifferent to them."
"Right...well, close your eyes then." Kaine picked up Reiko, scaring her slightly from how easily he lifted her, and put her on his back. "Just like...hold on tight, I guess?" Kaine, instead of entering the building, stepped back and placed his hand against the outside wall, then his other hand, then his foot, until he began crawling up. "Just hold on tight. Um...don't think about falling to the concrete." Kaine mentally slapped himself after saying something so dumb, "I'm just gonna stop talking."
The two finally reached the roof top, Reiko looked over the ledge and gulped. "The building feels a lot taller on top than looking up from the bottom." she mumbled.
"Hey, did you remember where the bomb was located?" Kaine asked.
"Yeah, fourth floor, pretty close to the middle." Reiko nodded.
"Good, then...let's strategize our plan of attack...because you may not like our entrance."
Inside, Tetsutetsu, Pony and Monoma stood by the faux bomb, with Tetsutetsu starting to lose his patience. "AAAAAGH! Where are they? We've been standing here for like fifteen minutes and we haven't even heard a peep."
"Hmph, easier win for us then." Monoma shrugged, "Yoshida is probably tripping over himself trying to figure out a strategy."
"He-He does seem to overthink things." Pony added with a nod.
Monoma smirked, "Tetsutetsu, seems we may not need to break a sweat after all. We have this match in the-" Suddenly, the trio was startled as the glass behind them shattered and they saw Kaine jumping through the window with Reiko riding his back, "-bag?!" Monoma was quickly silenced as Kaine's palm covered his face and slammed him into the ground.
"Wait, what the hell?" Tetsutetsu asked in surprise.
Pony was the first to react, immediately sending two horns at Kaine's head, however, they were countered as Reiko used her quirk to manipulate the glass on the ground and hit the horns in the air and throw them off course. Kaine lifted his arm and quickly shot two web balls at Pony, but they were blocked by Tetsutetsu's arm. Kaine let out a slight groan of disappointment as he jumped off Monoma and webbed Reiko towards him so they could have distance between everyone. "Pretty sneaky, Yoshida!" Tetsutetsu complimented, "But even with the element of surprise you still ended up in the front, no closer to the bomb."
Kaine let out a slight chuckle before punching the wall behind him, shattering off several pieces. "Yanagi, you get Tsunotori. I'll handle Tetsutetsu." Reiko nodded and lifted some of the debris and began throwing it at Pony. Meanwhile, Tetsutetsu smirked and punched his fist together. "My fists are about to become super magnets, I hope your jaw is as metal as it looks." Kaine stood up and rolled his shoulders before getting in a fighting stance.
Tetsutetsu charged forward and threw a punch at Kaine which he blocked with his left hand. Kaine went to counter with a gut punch but as he did so he felt a sting shoot up his arm. Okay...need to hit a little harder. Dude has steel skin. Kaine winced. Immediately Kaine was punished for his poor counter by taking a left hook across his face. "Nice try, Kaine, but you're gonna have to hit me harder than that!" Kaine gave a frustrated groan, he used his free hand and webbed one of Tetsutetsu's feet and pulled forward, bringing him off balance. Kaine then cocked his torso back and sent himself forward with great force landing a massive headbutt against Tetsutetsu.
Tetsutetsu fell back from the force but quickly got back to his feet. "Is that enough force for you?" Kaine asked with a chuckle. Tetsutetsu rushed at Kaine again. Kaine shot a webline at Tetsutetsu, but because the steel teen was running towards him, he wasn't able to get the webbing taught enough to be able to trip up his foe. Because of this Tetsutetsu was able to catch Kaine while he was wide open and send a punch to his gut, then continued with a hook to his face. Tetsutetsu tried to send a third strike to Kaine, but Kaine caught the fist and twisted Tetsutetsu's arm before flipping the teen over his shoulder and onto the ground.
Kaine couldn't celebrate his victory for long as he felt a body collide into him. When he looked up he saw Reiko, wincing in pain. "Yanagi!" Kaine yelled out. He heard a laugh and he looked up to see Monoma standing over them, laughing, with his hand covering part of his face.
"Oh my god! You got the drop on us, and you still messed up!" Monoma laughed, "My quirk is Copy, remember? It activates when I touch someone, and I got an easy steal thanks to you slamming my head into the ground. Now I have your quirk! And it just. Feels. So. GOOD!" Monoma held his hands out wide and clutched his fists, "I mean, I tossed her around like she was a pebble. You truly blundered here, Yoshida. I mean, you have trouble fighting one person, so how will you handle someone who is as strong as you?"
Kaine grabbed Reiko and he gently placed her against the wall. He looked over to Pony and it seems that she had been knocked down. Yanagi must have been coming to help me when Monoma caught her off guard. Kaine thought. Kaine squinted his eyes and looked to his right to see Tetsutetsu getting to his feet. "WHERE ARE YOU LOOKING!" Kaine heard the yelling of Monoma and ducked just in time to avoid his attack, he instead sent his fist through the wall. Using the moment to his advantage, Kaine webbed Monoma's hand to the wall. "Dammit, Tetsutetsu! Deal with him while I try to get out."
Tetsutetsu rushed forward and threw a hook that Kaine blocked and countered with a jab to the chin. Kaine then went low and wrapped his arms around Tetsutetsu before lifting him up. He sustained several hard hits to his back before he slammed Tetsutetsu to the ground. Kaine was then struck across the face by Monoma who had broken from his web prison sooner than expected. "You're not getting away from me that easily, Yoshida!" Monoma yelled out. Monoma then held up his hand and tried to fire webbing...only for none to come out, "What? How? I'm sure he did it like this."
Kaine replied by webbing Monoma's face and pulling him close for an attack. Kaine sent a gut check to the blonde teen, followed by a left hook across Monoma's cheek and finished with a straight kick to the gut. Monoma grabbed Kaine's kick and lifted it up before kicking him in the face and send him sliding across the ground. Kaine quickly got to his feet but was met with an elbow to his head. Kaine blocked Monoma's next attack and countered with a straight, and then another, then a gut punch. "You may be able to copy other quirks...but you still don't know how to use them!" Kaine taunted.
"I may not know how to use your webs, but you have super strength. What else do I need?" Monoma asked with an almost sadistic smile. "I'll just finish it right here! You won't escape."
"Yoshida, look out!" Kaine heard Reiko's voice calling to him, he looked behind him and saw Tetsutetsu gearing up for a massive punch. Time felt like it was slowing down and Kaine reacted in the way he felt would be the only way to avoid both attacks: By doing the splits of course. Monoma had sent a low uppercut that would have hit Kaine had he not moved his head slightly, and instead Monoma ended up hitting Tetsutetsu in the upper rib area, while Tetsutetsu hit Monoma in the face.
"Like, I said: Don't know how to use them, AND you'll have the same weaknesses!" Kaine followed up his statement by sending an uppercut from his split position and struck Monoma in the groin. Much like what happened when Setsuna hit Kaine in the groin the other day, Monoma immediately went down to the ground. Kaine then quickly spun to his feet to face Tetsutetsu. He wrapped one arm under one of Tetsutetsu's legs, and wrapped his other free arm around Tetsutetsu's torso, he then suplexed the metal teen onto Monoma and webbed the two to the ground.
Kaine stood up, breathing heavily, and he walked over to Reiko. "C'mon, Yanagi. Let's finish this." Kaine wrapped one of Reiko's arms around his shoulder and supported her to the bomb where they both touched it.
"And with that the heroes win!" All Might yelled through the intercoms.
Back in the observation room the 1-B class was cheering at the seemingly impossible success. "Yea-ha! Way to remember your battles, Kaine!" Setsuna cheered with a smile, "Taught the kid everything he knows."
"I have to admit, I didn't think Yanagi and Yoshida would be a good combination, but they worked rather well together." Awase said with a nod, "Also did you see how badass Yoshida was? Using his webs to swing like a rope? He swung into that building like a secret agent or something!"
All Might kept his smile as he watched the footage, Congratulations young Yoshida. You definitely surprised me today. And that quirk! Reminds me of one of the many heroes of yesteryear that I admired. "Congratulations hero team. Go ahead and clear the field. Young Yoshida, just stay in the building. I'll send your partner to you." Kaine gave a thumbs up on the monitor and removed his mask as he leaned against the wall and sat down.
"Now then," All Might continued, "Time we pick the next round of combatants." He scratched the back of his head in deep thought before snapping his fingers, "I know! Kaibara, Shoda, and Kamakiri. You'll be the three man Hero Team. Kendo, you'll be Yoshida's partner!"
"What, me?" Kendo asked.
Kendo walked up to the fourth floor where Kaine was sitting. She opened the door and saw him in the same spot except he was..."Snoring?" Kendo let out a light giggle. She held a water bottle in her hand which she pressed against Kaine's neck, the resulting cold bottle making his whole body shiver and waking him up. "Here, All Might said I should bring you some water." Kaine grabbed the bottle and downed it's contents in an instant. His stomach growled and Kendo folded her arms, "'I'm not hungry.'" she said with air quotes while deepening her voice to imitate Kaine, "Don't think I didn't notice, you skipped lunch again today didn't you."
"To be fair, I forgot my cash today...and also with the last time, I just lied because I didn't want to bother anybody." Kaine replied. Again, partially true. he thought. "So you and I are partners? Seems a little overloaded." Kaine mentioned.
Kendo clicked her tongue and shrugged, "I mean, I don't disagree." She cupped her chin and hummed, "We are gonna have to come up with a plan. Our opponents are Kamakiri, Shoda and Kaibara." Kaine clicked his tongue and scratched his head as he heard the names of his opponents, "As a team I don't know how they'll do. Especially since Kamakiri doesn't really come off as much of a team player."
"Blades, drill, and a double. It's like a retro beat em' up." Kaine mumbled. "The strategy is gonna have to be solid. Better than anything any of us would normally think of, outside the box." Kaine stopped and blinked his eyes a few times, "Out...side...the box." he mumbled, "Oh my God. Kendo, I have a really good idea."
"What is it?" Kendo asked, "You wanna try taking them on? Throw them off."
"No no," Kaine shook his head before pulling Kendo down to crouch with him, "We have to think OUTSIDE the box."
Kendo blinked and frowned, clearly not impressed, "What the hell are you talking about?
With the trio, they stood outside the building going over their plan...it wasn't going well. "I say we charge in and rush 'em." Kamakiri suggested, "Just look at the facts. Yoshida is strong, but he isn't invincible. He can't stop blades," Kamakiri proved his point by having a blade come out of his arm, "And he can't stop a drill. And he most definitely won't be able to stop a second hit that can activate whenever. If the three of us rush him, he'll have no chance."
"Um..." Shoda gulped, "What about Kendo?"
"What about Kendo?" the other boys asked. "Kendo's strong, but she isn't as much of a threat compared to Yoshida." Kaibara continued, "We could just leave her alone. Hell, if she starts giving us trouble we could just have one of us going after her. Hell, even two of us could distract them while the third goes for the bomb. We have this in the bag."
Shoda didn't look so sure, he actually looked a little apprehensive, "Yoshida is smart, he's shown us his abilities at strategizing. Not only that...but he's had a lot more time to look at our quirks than we have his. He may be well aware of how to defend himself against us."
"The guy shoots webs and fights with a boxing technique." Kaibara countered, "As long as we stay close we can take him down no problem. Unless he wants to lose an arm." he and Kamakiri laughed. "Alright, it's settled, let's move in. Shoda, you lead the way." The trio opened the door and Shoda jumped back in surprise to see Kendo waiting for them.
"Hello, boys." Kendo greeted with a grin, "We were getting kinda bored, so we decided to have some fun." she stuck out her and gave a peace sign before taking off.
"After her!" Kamakiri yelled out as he and Kaibara began chasing her down through the building.
"Guys, wait!" Shoda called out. Shoda suddenly felt his body go weightless as he was yanked up towards the ceiling. Kaine grabbed him by the collar and webbed his mouth shut.
"Hey there, Shoda." Kaine greeted, "You're not scared of heights are you?" Kaine then webbed Shoda's body to the ceiling and nodded, "Don't worry, it dissolves in a few hours."
Back with Kendo, she was running through the building. She looked like she was being cautious of where she stepped. "The hell is she doing?" Kaibara asked, "You think she's leading us into a trap?" As he asked that, the duo saw Kendo hurdle for no reason and they didn't realize what for until the two of them tripped over a web tripwire that was set up. "Uuuugh...I think I figured out why she was moving so strangely." Kaibara groaned.
Kamakiri groaned in frustration and he punched the floor as he quickly got to his feet and began chasing after Kendo again. Kaibara took a little longer to get to his feet, but be began chasing after Kendo again all the same.
Dammit, Kaine. This plan better work out. Kendo thought as she rounded a corner. She found a web strand lying on the ground and she lifted it up and pulled so that it was taught with the other end that was connected to the wall. When Kamakiri rounded the corner he was clotheslined and fell flat on his back. Yes! Kendo fist pumped and took off running again as Kaibara rounded the corner, "What are you doing lying around for, Kamakiri?" he asked. "C'mon, get to your feet." he helped Kamakiri to his feet and the two chased Kendo again until cornering her by some windows.
"You have nowhere to go," Kamakiri said as blades came out of his arms, "I was going to just cuff you and call it good, but you've really pissed me off."
Kendo shrugged and sighed, "You boys really have a one-track mind, huh?" she looked back at the window before smirking at the two, "See you later." she waved before she ran directly at the window, growing her fist as she jumped through it.
"HOLY CRAP!" Kaibara yelled out as he gripped his hair, "Did you see that? We're on the third floor, she probably just killed herself!" The two boys ran to the broken window and looked down, "Do you see a red splat somewhere?"
"I don't see her at all." Kamakiri replied, "just glass and asphalt."
"I see two morons who took the biggest bait ever." The two boys looked up to see Kaine clinging to the wall directly above them. The spider teen quickly jumped forward off the wall and shot to two weblines at the teens, pulling them out the window. As they fell, Kaine shot another webline to the wall and swung forward, kicking both the combatants at once and sending them through the glass of the floor below where Kendo waited for them.
Kendo quickly used her handcuffs to capture both Kamakiri and Kaibara at once while they were trying to catch their breath after essentially following a whole story. "Dude, that so wasn't cool." Kaibara coughed out.
"THE VILLAINS HAVE WON!" All Might yelled through the intercom.
Back in the observation room, the class gathered one last time before they were let out. "HAHA! That was sensational!" All Might belted out, "You students truly are a gifted bunch. Don't you forget that. You made it into the hero program for a reason you know. They saw something in you, something great. It was something that has been seen in every great hero that's out there today, and that is a sense of heroism and a sense of commitment." he smiled, "All of you have really impressed me today. Keep up your hard work, and remember: PLUUUUUS ULTRA!"
"PLUS ULTRA!" the students cheered back.
