He Lingling received a call from her mother, learning that her sister had given birth to a baby and that a full-month banquet would soon be held. She wanted to go back and was contemplating how to bring it up with Li Fengnian.
She didn't know if he would agree, but she wasn't thinking of not going back. She thought he should consent, though she couldn't understand why she felt uneasy inside.
When Li Fengnian came out, he saw He Lingling looking rather dejected, lounging half-heartedly on the chaise lounge. She held a small wildflower in her hand, picking off petals one by one, murmuring softly without forming coherent words, uncertain of what she was saying.
He also sat on the chaise lounge, stretching his right hand over He Lingling's nape and his left hand under her knees, lifting her onto his lap.
Startled, He Lingling's face turned slightly red, awkward about their public display of affection, trying to push him away. Li Fengnian didn't insist, letting her sit beside him.
