Chapter 9 - Escape From the Wooden Cell

Ethan found himself imprisoned within a wooden cell, deep in the heart of the cannibal community. His whole body was in pain, but his determination to escape blazed like a beacon of hope in the midst of darkness and it pushed him to put the pain as an afterthought, he did not have the luxury of hurting since he had no idea how much time he had left before the came back looking for him to end his existence.

The hinges on the cell door and a concealed loose board in the wall represented his best chances for freedom. The hinges appeared weak, their rusted state making them vulnerable, while the concealed board held the promise of an escape route. It was a daunting endeavor, but Ethan knew he had to try.

Ethan and the woman were both bound by ropes. Ethan worked to free himself, gradually unraveling the ropes that bound him with the bone. As he succeeded in freeing his hands, he looked at the woman with a reassuring smile, a sense of determination in his eyes.

Ethan: "I'm Ethan. Are you okay?"

The woman hesitated before responding, her voice filled with a mix of fear and hope.

Woman: "My name is Sophia. Thank you for trying to help."

Ethan nodded; his determination unwavering as he continued to work on the remaining bindings. Once his hands were completely free, he turned his attention to Sophia's restraints. With skillful hands, he untied the ropes that bound her wrists.

As he prepared to put his escape plan into motion, he couldn't help but ponder the oddity he'd noticed during his harrowing journey to the leader's hut. The cannibals' weaponry was notably devoid of ranged options; they relied solely on spears. In a world filled with advanced technology, this peculiarity caught his attention. The absence of firearms or projectile weapons presented a potential advantage that he could leverage for his escape. It was a fragile glimmer of hope in a desolate world that stirred his thoughts.

Focusing his attention on the hinges, he commenced his silent work. The sharp bone became his makeshift chisel, his nimble fingers probing the rusty metal. The hinges groaned and creaked but gave in to his relentless determination. He knew he had to work quietly to avoid detection.

Concurrently, he approached the concealed loose board, a potential gateway to freedom. With care and precision, he shifted aside the bones and rags that camouflaged it, revealing the vulnerable spot. The sharp bone met the aged wood, each laborious scrape bringing him closer to his ultimate goal.

As he toiled, he spoke further with Sophia who shared his dismal cell. She had been a captive of this nightmarish community for weeks, her appearance, voice, and fragile body spoke of the horrors she had witnessed.

Ethan: "How long have you been here? Do you know anything about these people?"

Sophia: "I was with a group of survivors escaping the city when we were captured weeks ago. These people are savages, capable of unspeakable acts."

Ethan: "We must escape. I can't allow them to do to me what they've done to others."

Ethan: "We need to be cautious. I have a plan, but it's risky. I need to retrieve something valuable before we can escape. Can you stay hidden here while I'm gone?"

Sophia: "I know a way out, but you must be exceedingly quiet. The cannibals patrol this place diligently, so I'll wait for you, Ethan. Just be careful out there. These people are unlike anything I've ever seen."

Ethan offered her a reassuring smile, knowing that their journey ahead was fraught with danger. He needed to secure the valuable item he sought and ensure Sophia's safety. The true nature of the device remained a secret known only to him, and he was determined to keep it that way.

Ethan's determination soared, the ember of hope growing into a blazing fire. He was driven by an intense desire to escape, not only for his own sake but also to protect the woman who had shared invaluable information.

Ethan: "Thank you for sharing this with me. We can make it together."

The woman's voice, though soft, held a tremor of hope that had long been extinguished in the depths of this wretched place.

Sophia: "Keep working on that door. Once you're free, the most challenging part will be behind us."

Minutes unfolded like hours, with Ethan persistently chiseling away at both the hinges and the concealed board. The weight of the situation was not lost on him, and his internal dialogue continued.

Ethan's thoughts repeatedly circled back to the peculiar absence of ranged weaponry among the cannibals. It was an oddity that had taken root in his mind, an anomaly that could serve as a double-edged sword in this nightmarish world. The risk of exploiting their reliance on spears was high, but the potential reward was even higher.

Sophia: "You're doing great. The hinges are almost there."

With a final, unwavering effort, the cell door yielded to Ethan's relentless determination. The hinges relinquished their grasp, and Ethan's path to freedom lay unobstructed. The fragility of the woman's body, the softness of her voice, and the weeks of torment etched into her appearance left an indelible impression on Ethan's mind. With the knowledge that he was not alone in this escape, he took a step toward freedom, resolute in his commitment to survive and protect his newfound ally.
