Calamities ascend from low to high and are classified as Earth Calamity, Heaven Tribulation, Vast Calamity, Myriad Tribulation, Small Difficulties of Chaos, and Great Chaos Tribulation.
The origin of tribulations stems from the Heavenly Tao's emphasis on balance, reducing the surplus to aid the insufficient. All things are in equilibrium, mutually restraining each other.
As the saying goes, a tree that stands out in the forest will surely be pressed by the wind. Similarly, a bank that builds up on the shore will inevitably be battered by the rapid current.
Ordinarily, a Saint undergoes a minor tribulation every seventy years and a major tribulation every hundred years. One must endure countless hardships to continue on the path of cultivation.
Not every Saint is confident in facing their tribulations. Therefore, many Saints choose to make a cut themselves, halting their cultivation progress for life as a trade-off to slow the arrival of their tribulations.
