Chapter 854 - Chapter 853: The Broken Mjölnir and the Upgrade

With a buzzing sound, Mjölnir, held by Thor, trembled continuously. Although Thor was also its rightful owner, at this moment, Mjölnir was bound to the horse-faced Thor. The hammer showed no signs of yielding to Thor, nor did it weaken its power. Instead, it released a constant stream of thunder, opposing Thor's strength.

This was not what Thor had expected. He had thought it was understandable that Mjölnir, while in the hands of the horse-faced god, couldn't be summoned back. But he assumed that once he grabbed hold of it, the hammer would naturally follow his commands again.

Yet now, Mjölnir continued to resist his power, and this filled Thor with dissatisfaction. Although Odin had placed an enchantment on Mjölnir, granting its power to whoever it deemed worthy, Thor hadn't been stripped of that privilege. Why, then, would the hammer, after centuries in his hand, remain loyal to someone else who had only just gained its favor?

As this thought crossed his mind, Thor's dissatisfaction grew. His grip tightened, and his terrifying power as a near-Skyfather-level god erupted, making Mjölnir tremble even more violently.

"Mjölnir, I'll give you one last chance..." Thor said, sounding like a man whose heart had been broken by a lover, his voice filled with sadness and affection. He could feel the tremors of the hammer in his hand, but despite his plea, Mjölnir remained resolute, releasing more thunder as if ready to stand with the horse-faced Thor till the end. The hammer's intent was clear—it would not fall easily to Thor's might.

Mjölnir, perhaps assuming Thor wouldn't truly harm it due to their long-standing bond, sought to demonstrate its power, unwilling to lose face before its new master.

"Fine." Seeing Mjölnir's defiance growing even stronger, Thor's eyes flashed coldly. The force within Mjölnir exceeded what Thor had experienced even when wielding it himself, and he could feel his heart breaking.

A strange power, part of Thor's rune mastery, began to emerge within the storm surrounding him. This was the same energy that had helped him ascend to near-Skyfather status during his struggle against the Mind Stone. Now, it was being turned against the weapon that had served him for so long.

With a crack, the runes heightened Thor's power to an unimaginable degree. Even Mjölnir, a divine weapon, could not withstand the rune's force. A small but distinct crack appeared on its surface.

Mjölnir let out a sorrowful cry as it felt itself breaking. Regret seemed to settle in, and the lightning it released weakened significantly. But it was too late. The rune's power was not only destroying Mjölnir's spirit but also erasing the enchantment left by Odin.

When the rune power collided fully with Odin's enchantment, a terrifying explosion rocked Mjölnir, shattering it into countless fragments.

At the same time, far away in Asgard, Odin, who was in his Odinsleep to preserve his power, suddenly opened his eyes, alarmed. He had sensed something amiss with Mjölnir, leading him to worry about Thor's safety.

"Wait… this is rune power? Is Thor destroying the power I left in Mjölnir? Why would he do that? Has he been controlled?" After a moment of probing, Odin glimpsed part of what had transpired through the residual divine energy left in Mjölnir.

"How is this possible? How could anyone be more worthy of Mjölnir than Thor? A horse-faced being has managed to claim Mjölnir and make it oppose Thor? No wonder Thor is furious. It's my fault; I should have lifted the enchantment earlier…"

Odin sighed. Though Mjölnir no longer served much of a practical purpose for Thor, it was still a symbol of Asgard's heir. However, Odin didn't seem too concerned about the loss of the hammer. After all, the dwarven king Eitri was still in Asgard, ready to forge whatever weapon Thor needed.

"No! Mjölnir!" On the battlefield, the horse-faced Thor let out a cry of anguish. As the hammer exploded and Odin's power was wiped away, he felt a wave of weakness sweep over him. The godly power that had elevated him beyond mortal beings vanished, leaving him as the ordinary Beta Ray Bill once more.

Even though Bill remained a formidable warrior among his race, his power paled in comparison to the now nearly Skyfather-level Thor. Without Mjölnir, Bill stood no chance.

Thor looked down at the broken pieces of Mjölnir scattered at his feet, only the handle still intact. Despite this, he continued channeling rune power into the shattered weapon.

Yes, Thor was in the process of rebuilding Mjölnir. Though the hammer had been broken, that didn't mean it was useless. As long as divine power remained, the hammer could still be reforged. Its physical form didn't determine its power.

But this time, Thor planned to impose new restrictions on Mjölnir. He was done with the hammer constantly recognizing new owners and even turning against him!

As the rune power surged, the scattered pieces of Mjölnir began to spark with lightning, slowly reassembling. As the hammer neared completion, the lightning grew more intense.

"You destroyed Mjölnir! I'll fight you to the end!" Bill, unaware of Thor's intentions, only saw that the hammer had been broken and continued his reckless charge.

Thor glanced at Bill and shook his head, a trace of mockery in his eyes. "He's even more of a brute than I was. At least I had some strength. He doesn't even realize how much stronger I am. But then again, I was like this too once. No wonder Mjölnir chose him…" Thor's sarcasm turned to self-deprecation as he recalled his own youthful battles on Earth.

While Thor mused, the rune power finished its transformation of Mjölnir. The hammer reformed in his hand, stronger than ever, though cracks still marred its surface.

The newly reforged Mjölnir now pulsed with Thor's power. It was completely in tune with him and would no longer need to rely on Odin's magic. Mjölnir had become Thor's amplifier once more, ready to enhance his battle prowess.

"It's time to show your new power, Mjölnir," Thor said with a slight smile as he looked at the hammer in his hand.

Mjölnir hummed, the hammer vibrating with joy, seemingly forgetting that Thor had just shattered it or that it had once betrayed him to serve Bill.

"Go," Thor said as he waved Mjölnir towards Bill, who was rapidly closing in.

A flash of lightning darted from the hammer, but instead of the entire weapon flying out, a small fragment of iron shot from it, streaking through the air like a beam of light and striking Bill squarely in the forehead.

With a splatter, Bill's horse-like head was pierced by the shard, and blood poured from the wound. His body stiffened as he stood motionless.

"M-Mjölnir…" Bill murmured as he gazed at the hammer. He collapsed, lifeless, his brain already destroyed by the lightning within the shard.

The small piece of Mjölnir flew back to the hammer, completing its form once more. Thor watched Bill fall with a satisfied smile, nodding approvingly.

Thor wasn't just pleased that Mjölnir had killed Bill without issue; he was relieved that the hammer had shown no signs of disobedience or rebellion. Mjölnir was finally and completely his, down to its very fragments.

"Looks like you had fun, Thor," a voice said. Thanos and his crew arrived, with Supergiant glancing at Thor. "Though I don't know what led to this battle, don't forget you still have a mission from Father..."

"I'll complete Lord Thanos's mission. It won't take long," Thor replied respectfully, raising Mjölnir.

With a hum, Mjölnir split into thousands of fragments, each charged with terrifying thunder. Some even flew so close to Supergiant's head that she felt a slight tingle.

"Will this move complete the mission?" asked Corvus Glaive.

"Of course. Mjölnir will track down every target until half the planet's life is wiped out. Only then will the fragments return to me," Thor said confidently.

Thanos raised an eyebrow but smiled. "Then let's see it happen. I trust the God of Thunder doesn't lie."
