Matthew turned his attention back to the oven in front of him, a smile that seemed to hide more than it revealed.
The third time would be the charm.
At least, that's what Carl hoped.
The young man remained seated beside him, watching his every move with a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. After witnessing two consecutive explosions, he was beginning to wonder if he should move a little further away.
For his own safety, of course.
"Matthew, can I ask you a question?" Carl said.
"Of course. As long as you don't make my cauldron explode, you can go ahead."
"Why do you think I'd make your cauldron explode? I'm an alchemist with many years of experience."
Matthew burst out laughing. "I'm just kidding—was that your question?"
Carl stared at him for a few seconds before sighing. In fact, he'd forgotten the question.
"It's your fault I can't remember it now. How can you be so rude when you answer? I can't figure out how Sylph fell in love with you."
