Chapter 29 - CH: 29 Anna and the Dark Magic

Pedro the goblin is a renowned doctor in chaotic places like wandering wizards.

He is also a wise man who excels in various marvelous fairy magic machinery and large time-turners.

However, when it comes to potions, treatment, and even research on the human soul, he is clearly far behind Fiennes.

The most evident example is that Anton was allowed to reside in the goblin's house.

Ascending the crooked stairs and pushing open the door, the second floor reveals a forest filled with fragrant soil.

Looking up, one can see a vast sky and gentle rainfall.

Gazing into the distance, the edge of the forest remains unseen.

Only when looking back, there stands a stone arch.

Anna Rosier emerged from the arch, as if passing through a transparent wave.

Observing Anton's curiosity, she explained, "Shuttle door, goblin magic is much cleaner than Floo powder in the fireplace."

After speaking, she turned her head and walked towards the stone path on the left, "I'll take you to where you'll be staying."

The little girl displayed obvious elegance in her posture as she walked gracefully. What's interesting is that no matter how she walked, she never looked down at the ground. Her eyes remained level, and her head seemed to stay in a fixed position.

Just looking at her made Anton feel tired.

The path twisted and turned, and after walking for a while, the light suddenly became clearer. Vines climbed over the bushes, forming a low fence, with a small open field in the center.

Three tall oak trees stood, each with a small log cabin where the trunks branched. Wooden steps extended around the trunks to the ground.

Anna pointed to the treehouse on the left and said, "The one with wind chimes on the window is mine, and you can choose one of the other two."

Then she explained, "Put the clothes that need to be cleaned in the wooden bucket by the back door. House-elves will wash them for you. They will also help you by placing them on the table by the window for meals every day, so it's best not to put other things on that table."

Anton was astonished. "There are house-elves here?"

Since he had just arrived, he hadn't seen any at all.

Anna smiled gently. "Good house-elves are only noticed when people don't realize they exist."

Anna didn't display much enthusiasm upon his arrival. Everything was done according to etiquette. After the introduction, she arrogantly turned her head and left.

Anton didn't mind. Although he had the body of a child, he looked about the same age as her.

But in essence, he was an adult in his twenties, and he didn't have much interest in chatting with a brat.

He randomly chose the oak tree house on the right and ascended the stairs.

Pushing the door open, the interior of the cabin was of actual size, with a soft-looking bed, a desk, a wardrobe, and a small round table next to the window.

It wasn't big, but it was very clean.

This would be his temporary living space.

After chatting with Lupin for a while, the poor child fell asleep again, and Pedro had no other choice.

On the other hand, Fiennes mentioned that there were some potions that could provide relief, but he would have to search through his long list of memories to find them.

So, he found himself with plenty of idle time.

Anton had many dreams when he was a child, but after becoming a social animal, only one dream remained - to get a good night's sleep.

However, in this dangerous world, he didn't know how to develop the habit of being at ease.

Since there was nothing to clean up, he simply ventured into the forest, followed the path to the stone gate, and continued walking to the other side.

There was nothing remarkable here, just trees being trees.

It was especially suitable for practicing magic spells.

"Animus Transferro!" he exclaimed, waving his wand. A translucent blue light flickered and struck the trees.

The mana consumption was minimal, indicating that the spell hadn't been successfully cast in its entirety.

But it was enough for him to practice repeatedly.

He made sure to practice this spell as a conditioned reflex, rather than a Cruciatus curse.

"Animus Transferro!"

"Animus Transferro!"

"Animus Transferro!"

It is said that the meaning of reading a book a hundred times is self-evident, and through repeated practice, Anton vaguely sensed something.

But what exactly was it? He couldn't quite grasp it.

In this moment, his heart was consumed by the intense emotion of "resistance" required by the magic spell, and he could only focus on repeating the process.

It was a highly contradictory situation.

In order to study this spell effectively, he needed to maintain his sanity. However, the spell required a strong, even extreme, emotion to be released.

"What spell is this?" a voice suddenly came from behind, startling Anton to the point where he almost cast the spell in the direction of the voice.

Anton turned to look and saw the little girl, Anna.

Anna regarded him with suspicion. "Although I haven't been able to cast the spell yet, I have memorized all the spells in 'The Complete Book of Spells', and I've never come across this one!"

Anton raised an eyebrow and replied, "Perhaps I overlooked it."

"Impossible!" Her expression remained resolute. "The Rosier family has a long-standing magical lineage, and it's inconceivable to overlook such a spell."

"Oh? Tell me more," Anton grew intrigued.

"I'm particularly fond of the Patronus spell. I look forward to having a Patronus to accompany me if I can harness magic in the future," Anna spoke calmly.

Anton glanced at her, assessing her from head to toe, and shook his head. "This spell requires happy memories."

This young girl seemed to embody the stereotype of an "elegant lady," displaying little emotion. Even when she appeared unhappy, she would merely roll her eyes in secret, as expressionless as a delicate piece of wood.

He found it quite surprising that a magical family like hers could raise such an emotionally detached individual. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing, as it would suit a noblewoman just fine. However, a wizard needed to be highly in tune with their emotions, making this kind of upbringing unsuitable for a wizard.

Unaware of his thoughts, Anna lifted her proud little head. "Of course, I have happy memories."

She tilted her head, a rare display of curiosity. "My mother is an Animagus with the form of a rabbit. She loves me dearly, and I love her just as much. Perhaps my patronus will take the shape of a rabbit."

Well, as long as she's happy.

Anton pursed his lips, not wanting to concern himself with other people's affairs, and decided to continue practicing.

"I've answered your question, but you haven't answered mine," Anna reiterated, furrowing her slender brows slightly, indicating her anger.

"..."

Anton brandished his wand. "This is a form of dark magic used to separate the soul."

"Dark magic? That explains it," Anna suddenly realized. "There is no mention of dark magic in 'The Complete Book of Spells' left by my mother."

Isn't that right?

The Rosier family is notorious for their involvement in dark wizardry.

Anton expressed his confusion. "Your family doesn't practice dark magic?"

Anna shook her head. "My mother doesn't. After she married into the Rosier family, someone tried to teach her. Although she resisted at first, she eventually agreed to give it a try."

"My aunt was also studying alongside her, and then something terrible happened."

Anton suddenly recalled the story of the old wizard who had an infatuation with dark magic and ended up blowing himself into pieces of flesh.

"My aunt, she went mad."

Anton remained silent. Was learning black magic truly so costly that even a pure-blooded family couldn't escape its influence?

Anna let out a sigh. "The reason is that my uncle had an affair and brought another child into the family. My aunt couldn't bear such a betrayal. She flew on a broom into the sky, jumped off, and met her demise in front of my uncle."

"..." Anton's mouth twitched.

"My mother believed that learning black magic brought nothing but misfortune, and she has never dabbled in it since then." Anna concluded with a melancholic tone.
