"...we meet on our second day in school and have been really close since the beginning."
"Hmm..."
The conversation between my mother and Ranni was proceeding exactly as I imagined—more of an interrogation disguised as polite inquiry.
"Next question..." Mother began, already leaning forward.
"Is this a sane one, Yolanda? I can't imagine it will be," Granny Susie interrupted her daughter-in-law with perfect timing.
Granny was the only one I ever saw capable of getting under Mother's skin, and it worked again, forcing her to abandon whatever invasive question was next.
"Stivi, tell us about your school, any friends?" Mother asked, her tone shifting to an overly sweet curiosity. I rolled my eyes, knowing she was fully informed on my coming and goings.
"A few, it seems people are getting used to me."
"Pfft..."
I looked at Ranni with raised eyebrows, waiting for an explanation for that dismissive sound.
