Chapter Nineteen: The Vampire and the Wolf

#caf1_19

The old oak tree stood at the edge of Crimson Woods like a sentinel, its gnarled branches reaching toward the darkening sky. Daniel arrived early, his hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets, his breath forming small clouds in the cold evening air.

He'd told his mother he was going to study at Ryan's house. It was a lie, but a necessary one. She didn't need to know about the vampire waiting for him in the woods.

Caroline had insisted on coming, perched on his shoulder like a golden scarf. Her presence was comforting, a small warmth against the growing dread in his chest.

"You're nervous," she observed.

"Wouldn't you be?" Daniel muttered. "I'm about to have a secret meeting with a vampire."

"He saved you from Walter today."

"That doesn't mean I trust him."

"Trust is earned. Give him a chance."

Daniel sighed. "You sound like Evil Buddha."

"Evil Buddha sounds like me. I'm older."

Daniel was about to ask what she meant by that when a figure emerged from the shadows of the trees.

Orpheus Rodolfo moved with an otherworldly grace, his red hair catching the last rays of the setting sun. He was dressed casually—a black turtleneck and dark jeans—but there was nothing casual about the aura of power that surrounded him.

"You came," Orpheus said, a hint of surprise in his voice. "I wasn't sure you would."

Daniel shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "You said you wanted to talk. So talk."

Orpheus smiled, but it wasn't mocking—it was almost...relieved. "Direct. I like that."

He walked closer, stopping a few feet away. His red eyes flickered to Caroline, and something like recognition passed through them.

"Interesting companion," he murmured.

"She's my cat," Daniel said defensively.

"She's more than that," Orpheus replied. "But that's not why I asked you here."

Daniel crossed his arms. "Then why?"

Orpheus was silent for a moment, his gaze drifting to the dark trees of Crimson Woods. When he spoke, his voice was quieter, more serious.

"Because we're both in danger. And I think we're the only ones who can help each other."

Daniel frowned. "What kind of danger?"

Orpheus turned back to him, his red eyes intense. "There's a Crimsone named Viktor. He's ancient—over five hundred years old. He's been hunting Lycanthropes for centuries, experimenting on them, trying to create something...unnatural."

Daniel felt a chill run down his spine. "What kind of experiments?"

"He wants to create hybrids," Orpheus said. "Creatures that are both Lycanthrope and Crimsone. Abominations with the strength of wolves and the immortality of vampires. He believes they'll be the ultimate weapon."

Daniel's wolf stirred, a low growl building in his chest. "That's impossible."

"That's what everyone thought," Orpheus said. "But Viktor is close. And there's one thing he needs to complete his work: the blood of a Lycanthrope who carries the Alpha's Mark."

Daniel's blood ran cold. "The Alpha's Mark?"

"The mark left by an Alpha when they initiate someone. You have it, Daniel. I can sense it on you."

Daniel thought back to that day in Crimson Woods—the Lycanthrope who had scratched him, the strange glowing eyes, the power that had radiated from it.

"That was an Alpha?" he whispered.

"A rogue Alpha named Varek," Orpheus confirmed. "He was corrupted by Viktor. Turned into a weapon. He's been going around, marking potential Lycanthropes, creating soldiers for Viktor's army."

Daniel felt sick. "So I'm just a pawn? A tool for some ancient vampire?"

Orpheus shook his head. "You're more than that. The Alpha's Mark isn't just a scar—it's a gift. It means you have potential far beyond most Lycanthropes. Viktor knows this. That's why he's hunting you."

Daniel's mind raced. The scratches that had disappeared, the transformation that had changed him, the power he could feel growing inside him—it all made sense now.

"Why are you telling me this?" Daniel asked. "You're a Crimsone. You should be on Viktor's side."

Orpheus's expression darkened. "I'm not like Viktor. My family...we believe in coexistence. We don't hunt humans, we don't experiment on other Cursed. We just want to live in peace."

"But Viktor doesn't."

"No. And he's growing stronger. He's gathering allies—rogue Lycanthropes, dark wizards, demons. He's planning something big, Daniel. Something that will change the supernatural world forever."

Daniel studied Orpheus carefully. The vampire's words sounded sincere, but could he really trust him? Crimsones were enemies. That was what the pack had told him.

"What do you want from me?" Daniel asked.

"I want to help you," Orpheus said. "I want to train with you, fight with you. Together, we might have a chance to stop Viktor before it's too late."

Daniel shook his head. "I don't even know how to control my powers yet. I can't fight an ancient vampire."

"You won't be alone," Orpheus said. "There are others like us—Lycanthropes and Crimsones who want peace. We can find them. We can build an army."

Daniel thought about the pack—Selene, Finn, Kaya, Torben. They were already fighting. Maybe Orpheus was right. Maybe they needed to work together.

But there was still so much he didn't understand.

"I need time to think," Daniel said. "I can't just...trust you. Not yet."

Orpheus nodded, understanding in his red eyes. "I know. Take all the time you need. But be careful, Daniel. Viktor's agents are everywhere. They could be watching us right now."

Daniel glanced around, suddenly paranoid. "How do I know you're not one of them?"

Orpheus's smile was sad. "You don't. But if I were, you'd already be dead."

Daniel's wolf growled, but he pushed it down. "Fine. I'll think about it."

Orpheus reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver card. "This is my number. Call me if you decide to trust me."

Daniel took the card, careful not to touch Orpheus's fingers. The vampire smiled again, then turned and disappeared into the trees, his figure dissolving into the darkness like smoke.

Daniel stood there for a long moment, staring after him. Caroline purred softly on his shoulder.

"He's telling the truth," she said. "I can sense it in him. He's afraid, but he's sincere."

Daniel sighed. "I don't know what to do, Caroline. Everything's changing so fast."

"That's life. It never stops changing. You just have to learn to change with it."

Daniel looked up at the sky, where the first stars were beginning to appear. "I wish my dad were here. He'd know what to do."

Caroline was silent for a moment. Then: "He might. But you don't need him. You're stronger than you know, Daniel Stark."

Daniel felt a warmth spread through his chest—the warmth of friendship, of hope. He reached up and scratched behind Caroline's ears.

"Thanks, Caroline. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'd probably die of loneliness and malnutrition. Now let's go home. I'm hungry."

Daniel laughed, the sound carrying through the dark woods. And for the first time in weeks, he felt like everything might be okay.

~

Later that night, Daniel lay in bed, staring at the silver card Orpheus had given him. On one side was a phone number. On the other was a symbol—a crescent moon intertwined with a drop of blood.

"The Veil," Daniel whispered, recognizing the symbol from something Evil Buddha had shown him.

So Orpheus was connected to The Veil after all. That changed things.

He picked up his phone and sent a message to Evil Buddha.

"Orpheus wants to work with me. He told me about Viktor."

The reply came quickly: "I know. Orpheus is an agent of The Veil. He was sent to Crimson Springs to protect you."

Daniel's eyes widened. "Protect me? From what?"

"From Viktor. From the Crimsones. From everyone who wants to use you for their own ends."

Daniel stared at the message. So Orpheus had been sent to find him. To protect him. Everything he'd said—about wanting to help, about fighting Viktor—it had been true.

But there was still one thing he didn't understand.

"Why me?" he typed. "Why am I so important?"

There was a long pause. Then: "Because the Alpha's Mark you carry is not just any mark. It's the Mark of the First Wolf. The mark of the original Lycanthrope. You, Daniel Stark, are the descendant of the first Werewolf. And that makes you the most powerful Lycanthrope in existence."

Daniel dropped his phone.

The First Wolf?

Him?

He stared at the ceiling, his heart pounding. Everything he'd thought he knew about himself was wrong. He wasn't just a victim of circumstance. He wasn't just a random kid who'd been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He was the descendant of the first Werewolf.

And the whole supernatural world was about to come for him.

~

The next morning, Daniel woke up to find Caroline staring at him with an intensity that was almost unnerving.

"You know now," she said. "Who you are. What you carry."

Daniel nodded slowly. "I'm...I'm the descendant of the first Werewolf."

"Yes."

Daniel sat up, his mind racing. "How long have you known?"

"Since the moment I met you. I felt the Mark on you. It's why I chose to stay with you."

Daniel frowned. "Chose? I found you injured in my backyard."

Caroline's golden eyes glowed faintly. "I wasn't injured, Daniel. I was in hiding. Waiting for you."

Daniel stared at her. "You...you were waiting for me?"

"I am a guardian spirit. Sent to protect the Mark of the First Wolf. Sent to protect you."

Daniel felt like his brain was going to explode. "So you're not even a real cat?"

"I'm a spirit in the form of a cat. It's the form I chose because it would make you trust me."

Daniel thought back to all the moments he'd shared with Caroline—her sarcastic comments, her demanding meows, her comfort when he'd been at his lowest.

"You're not a cat," he said slowly. "You're a...a babysitter."

Caroline's ears flattened. "I prefer 'guardian.'"

Daniel couldn't help but laugh. "I can't believe I've been feeding a spirit."

"And I can't believe my charge is so slow. Now feed me. Spirits get hungry too."

Daniel shook his head, still laughing as he got out of bed. His world had been turned upside down, but somehow, having Caroline—his bizarre, sarcastic, supernatural cat—made it all bearable.

"Okay, okay. I'll feed you. But then we need to talk about what happens next."

"What happens next is you train. You learn to control your powers. And you prepare for the war that's coming."

Daniel paused, looking at her. "And Orpheus?"

Caroline's eyes softened. "Orpheus is an ally. But he's also a Crimsone. There will always be tension between your kinds. You'll need to find a way to trust him—truly trust him—if you're going to survive what's coming."

Daniel nodded slowly. "Then I guess I better give him a call."

He picked up his phone and dialed the number on the silver card.

Orpheus answered on the first ring. "Daniel. I was wondering when you'd call."

"I'm in," Daniel said, his voice steady. "Let's stop Viktor. Together."

He could almost hear Orpheus's smile through the phone. "I knew you'd come around. Meet me after school tomorrow. We have work to do."

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at his phone, a strange mixture of excitement and fear coursing through him. He was about to embark on a journey that would change everything. A journey that would test his strength, his courage, and his very soul.

But he wasn't alone. He had Caroline. He had Evil Buddha. He had the pack. And now, he had Orpheus.

Together, they would face the darkness.

Together, they would fight.

And together, they would either save the world or die trying.

Daniel learns the truth about his heritage—the Mark of the First Wolf. Caroline is revealed as a guardian spirit. Daniel and Orpheus form an alliance. The war against Viktor is about to begin.
