Chapter 193 - Chapter 192 — The Role We Refused

Tony stared at the tower.

Yiping stared at Tony.

The seven anomalies stared at both of them.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Tony broke the silence.

"So."

Yiping sighed.

"Don't."

"I haven't said anything."

"I know you."

Tony smiled.

"Fair."

He looked back at the tower.

"We need a plan."

One of the anomalies asked:

"What kind of plan?"

Tony pointed at the enormous structure.

"One where we don't walk into the giant suspicious tower."

Yiping nodded.

"Agreed."

Tony pointed toward the surrounding city.

"And one where we figure out what's happening outside."

Yiping looked at him.

"That's probably the correct approach."

Tony smiled.

"See? I'm learning."

The first thing they discovered was that the city was changing every few minutes.

New buildings appeared.

New streets formed.

People suddenly remembered new pieces of their lives.

Some remembered families.

Others remembered jobs.

Some remembered entire childhoods.

It was as if the world was writing its history in real time.

Yiping watched everything carefully.

His system kept updating.

[TIMELINE STABILITY: 42.3%]

[TIMELINE STABILITY: 43.1%]

[TIMELINE STABILITY: 44.8%]

Tony looked at the numbers.

"That's good, right?"

"Generally."

"Generally?"

Yiping pointed toward the crowd.

"The faster the timeline stabilizes, the faster it establishes fixed events."

Tony understood.

"And once something becomes fixed..."

"It becomes difficult to change."

Tony nodded.

"So we need to make sure the first fixed events aren't disasters."

"Exactly."

Tony smiled.

"Finally, something I can work with."

They began moving through the city.

Tony quickly noticed something strange.

The people were not behaving like artificial creations.

They were behaving like normal humans.

They argued.

They laughed.

They panicked.

They helped each other.

They made mistakes.

They made decisions.

And every decision strengthened the timeline.

Tony watched a man help an injured stranger.

The stability increased.

He watched two people argue over a vehicle.

The stability increased again.

He watched a group of civilians organize themselves to help others.

Another increase.

Tony looked at Yiping.

"It's working."

Yiping nodded.

"The timeline doesn't need a hero."

He looked around.

"It needs people."

Tony smiled.

"That's much better."

Then the sky turned red.

Again.

Yiping immediately stopped walking.

"Something's wrong."

Tony looked upward.

The clouds were moving unnaturally.

A massive black shape appeared above the city.

Not a spaceship.

Not an army.

Something much larger.

A structure.

Tony's face became serious.

"That's new."

Yiping's system activated.

[MAJOR EVENT DETECTED.]

[EVENT NAME: INVASION.]

[ORIGIN: UNKNOWN.]

[TARGET: TIMELINE FOUNDATION.]

[ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 03:00]

Tony looked at the final number.

"Three minutes."

Yiping nodded.

"Three minutes."

Tony immediately turned toward the civilians.

"Then we need to get them underground."

One of the anomalies looked confused.

"Why?"

Tony stared at him.

"Because whatever is coming probably isn't friendly."

The anomaly nodded.

"Right."

Tony looked at Yiping.

"Can you find shelters?"

"Not yet."

"Then we'll build them."

Tony pulled out a small device from his pocket.

Yiping stared at it.

"Your technology works now?"

Tony smiled.

"No."

He pressed the button.

The device did nothing.

Tony stared at it.

"...Apparently not."

Yiping almost laughed.

Tony sighed.

"Fine."

He rolled up his sleeves.

"We improvise."

The seven anomalies quickly began helping.

One organized the civilians.

Another searched for safe locations.

Two began moving debris.

The mysterious stranger used his knowledge of the city to locate underground structures.

Tony worked with Yiping to create defensive positions.

They had no advanced armor.

No satellites.

No military.

No established government.

No superheroes.

Just people.

And yet—

They worked.

The city began preparing itself.

Yiping watched the stability indicator.

[TIMELINE STABILITY: 51.2%]

[52.8%]

[54.4%]

[56.9%]

Tony noticed.

"Every time they make a decision to help each other, the timeline gets stronger."

Yiping nodded.

"Exactly."

Tony smiled.

"Then maybe this is what the Observer was afraid of."

Yiping looked at him.

"What?"

"A world that doesn't need a protagonist."

Yiping remained silent.

Tony continued.

"He spent all this time trying to force the timeline into a story."

He looked at the civilians.

"But maybe the timeline can write itself."

Two minutes remained.

The black structure in the sky opened.

Something emerged.

Hundreds of glowing objects descended toward the city.

Yiping's system couldn't identify them.

[UNKNOWN ENTITY.]

[UNKNOWN ENTITY.]

[UNKNOWN ENTITY.]

[UNKNOWN ENTITY.]

Tony looked upward.

"That's never a good sign."

The objects suddenly accelerated.

Yiping shouted:

"Everyone down!"

The first wave hit.

BOOM!

The city shook.

Buildings collapsed.

People screamed.

Tony and Yiping were thrown backward.

Dust filled the street.

Yiping struggled to stand.

"Tony!"

"I'm fine!"

Tony emerged from the dust.

He looked toward the civilians.

Several buildings had collapsed around them.

But the shelter had held.

People were alive.

Tony smiled.

"Good."

Yiping looked toward the sky.

More objects were descending.

"This is only the first wave."

Tony cracked his knuckles.

"Then let's survive the second."

Suddenly, Yiping's system displayed another message.

[EXTERNAL INTERFERENCE DETECTED.]

Yiping froze.

Tony noticed.

"What?"

"The Observer."

A voice echoed through the city.

Not from the sky.

Not from the speakers.

From everywhere.

"You still don't understand."

Tony looked around.

The Observer's voice continued.

"You think I'm trying to destroy this world."

Yiping stared at the sky.

"But I'm not."

A pause.

"I'm trying to prevent something worse."

Tony shouted:

"Then stop hiding and explain yourself!"

Silence.

Then—

The Observer appeared above the tower.

His body was surrounded by distorted space.

"I cannot."

Tony frowned.

"Why?"

The Observer looked toward him.

"Because if I tell you the truth before the timeline reaches sufficient stability..."

The sky cracked.

"...the thing beyond the timeline will notice."

Yiping's eyes widened.

"The thing beyond..."

The Observer looked at him.

"Yes."

Another crack appeared.

Then another.

The Observer's expression became grim.

"You thought I was the enemy."

He looked toward the black structure.

"But I'm only the lock."

Tony's expression changed.

"Then what's on the other side?"

The Observer didn't answer.

Because the sky suddenly split open.

Something looked through.

One enormous eye.

The same eye that had appeared earlier.

But this time—

It wasn't watching them.

It was watching the entire timeline.

The Observer whispered:

"Now you know."

Yiping's system immediately displayed:

[CRITICAL WARNING]

[EXTERNAL ENTITY DETECTED.]

[CLASSIFICATION: NONE.]

[POWER LEVEL: UNMEASURABLE.]

Tony stared at the eye.

For once—

He had nothing sarcastic to say.

The eye slowly opened wider.

And the entire new world trembled.

To be continued...
