Chapter 37 - UNEXPECTED MORNING SWEET SURPRISES

Don's phone shattered the early evening silence with its urgent ring, the sound echoing through the stillness like a warning bell. He glanced at the caller ID, his heart sinking as he recognized the office number. Taking a deep breath, he answered the call, and a tense voice on the other end informed him about an unexpected issue that required his immediate attention. As the details unfolded, Don felt the burden of responsibility press heavier on his shoulders.

In the back seat of the car, Leo was completely oblivious, his head resting softly on Melissa's lap. The rhythmic rise and fall of his breathing indicated he was deeply asleep, the aftermath of a night spent celebrating a friend's birthday. His face, usually full of energy and life, now wore an expression of peace as he drifted in dreams, unaware of Don's growing anxiety.

Feeling the weight of his obligations, Don instinctively pulled the car over to the side of the road, steeling himself for the difficult conversation ahead. He turned to Melissa, her face illuminated softly by the dashboard lights, and asked, "Can you watch over Leo for the night?" He leaned closer, imploring her with sincerity in his voice. "I really need to take care of things back at the office. It would mean a lot if he could stay here with you."

Melissa hesitated for a moment, her gaze flicking to her sister, Mia, who was quietly seated in the front passenger seat, still processing the night's events. Seeking confirmation, she exchanged a quick glance with Mia. Her sister offered a subtle nod of encouragement, and Melissa turned back to Don with a reassuring smile. "Of course, you can leave Leo to me. We'll take care of him," she said, her voice steadying Don's nerves.

Arriving at Melissa's home—a cozy two-story house adorned with charming decorations—Don opened the car door, stepping out into the cool night air. He and the girls carefully maneuvered Leo from the confines of the vehicle to the inviting warmth of the living room. The thick, plush couch awaited them, and they gently laid Leo down, ensuring he was comfortable. Don felt a swell of relief wash over him as he tucked in the blanket, grateful to have friends like Melissa and Mia ready to help in a bind.

"Thank you, really," Don expressed as he turned back to them, genuine appreciation in his eyes. "I owe you both one." With that, he gave Leo one last glance, a mix of worry and fondness, before heading out the door and back to his looming responsibilities at the office.

Once the door closed behind him, Melissa let out a shallow sigh, her mind already racing with thoughts of the day ahead. She knelt down beside the couch, gently removing Leo's shoes and adjusting the blanket to ensure he was warm and comfortable. The soft scent of the laundry detergent used on the blanket enveloped her, bringing with it a sense of domesticity that calmed her nerves.

After ensuring Leo was settled, Melissa turned to her sister, who still looked a bit dazed. "You should go to bed, Mia," she suggested softly.

Mia nodded, fatigue evident in her eyes, and gave Melissa a weak smile before heading off to her own room. Left alone with Leo, Melissa took a moment to gather her thoughts. She retreated to her own sanctuary, indulging in the warmth of a long shower that washed away the remnants of the evening and left her feeling rejuvenated. The quiet, steam-filled bathroom served as her refuge, allowing her to mentally prepare for whatever chaos the next day might bring.

Once she was dressed in comfortable pajamas, she crawled under the covers, desperate for sleep. However, as the minutes ticked by, her mind buzzed with thoughts of the earlier festivities and the unexpected twists of the night.

Suddenly, the loud, relentless beeping of her alarm clock pierced the tranquility, dragging her from the depths of slumber. It was 6 AM. Groggy and disoriented, Melissa fumbled to silence it, angrily slapping the snooze button while also feeling an unfamiliar touch on the hand she randomly hit. Her sleepy brain registered the anomaly only seconds later.

Slowly blinking away the sleep, she opened her eyes to find Leo sitting beside her, his expression as alarmed as hers. Their simultaneous screams filled the small bedroom, the sound bouncing off the walls in a cacophony of shock. "You! Leo! What are you doing here?" she gasped, disbelief flashing across her features.

Leo, equally startled and confused, attempted to gather his thoughts and explain, but the words would not come. Instead, he stammered out a response, each word more tangled than the last. "I… I don't know. I just… I'm here?"

Before he could elaborate, Melissa let out another scream, her eyes wide with horror. Following her gaze, Leo looked down and realized the shocking truth—he was stark naked, exposed beneath the bedcovers. Panic pulsed through him as he quickly grabbed the blanket, instinctively wrapping it around himself in a desperate attempt to cover up.

Melissa, her heart racing, backed away from the scene and bolted out of the room, her mind racing with questions and confusion. Leo followed her, compelled to understand how he had ended up in such an embarrassing situation. The commotion roused Mia from her slumber, and she poked her head out from her room, curiosity etched on her face.

The moment she laid eyes on the spectacle—Leo awkwardly draped in the blanket, his cheeks flushed—she couldn't help but let out a chuckle. A wide grin spread across her face as she glanced between the two. "Well, this is interesting!" she teased before disappearing back into her room, unable to contain her amusement.

Slightly embarrassed but also determined to get answers, Melissa instructed Leo to sit on the couch, her tone shifting from shock to seriousness. "Okay, let's figure this out. How did you end up here in my bed, and why are you naked?" she asked, her voice steadying as she fixed him with an inscrutable gaze.

Leo rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassment flooding him again. "I really don't remember," he admitted, his expression bewildered. "The last thing I recall is being at the party… and then… nothing."

Just then, the doorbell rang, cutting through the tense atmosphere. Melissa's heart skipped a beat. "Great, just what I need," she muttered under her breath as she headed toward the door.

Mia beat her to it, swinging the door wide open to reveal Don standing there, a bright, playful smile lighting up his face. "Good morning, gorgeous," he greeted, his easy charm evident as he stepped inside. When he caught sight of Leo, wrapped in the blanket and sporting an embarrassed expression, he raised an eyebrow, his smile widening with amusement. "Rough night?"

Without missing a beat, he tossed Leo a pair of clothes he had brought with him. "You might want these," he quipped, his tone light, as if to ease the tension creeping back into the room.

Grateful, Leo grabbed the clothes, nodding his thanks while making a hasty retreat back to the sanctuary of the bedroom. While Don chatted with the girls, he expressed his heartfelt gratitude for their hospitality, his voice genuine. "I really appreciate this. I'll make it up to you both. How about breakfast?" he offered with an inviting smile.

Both sisters exchanged looks of surprise and delight, a hint of excitement sparking at the prospect of a spontaneous meal together. They couldn't have predicted the chaotic morning, but they also knew it was a day they'd likely never forget, one filled with laughter, confusion, and maybe even a little more clarity about Leo's unexpected presence in their lives. As Leo emerged from the room a few moments later, dressed and slightly more composed, the trio gathered in the living room, ready to face the day ahead together, united in friendship and camaraderie despite the tangled web of the previous night's events.
