The concealed watcher had turned toward the airship. Yard guards were occupied with the arriving cargo, and the engine's low roar covered the scrape of Lucian's boots against stone. He reached the drain channel, stepped through the gap between the runic markers, and climbed.
The wall offered narrow seams rather than proper handholds. He moved without haste. A rushed grip failed more loudly than a careful one.
Dust drifted from the open window above. The cleaner had left it propped with a wooden block while he swept the adjoining room. Lucian waited below the sill until the broom strokes moved away, then pulled himself inside.
He entered a supply room containing folded cloth, seal wax, empty document boxes, and shelves of cleaning materials. The cleaner's cart stood in the corridor. Lucian passed it before the man returned.
