Two mist barriers divided the route ahead. Each opened according to a different physical counterweight below, and the dark glass distorted the distance between them. The final sequence might require minutes or hours.

Tessa placed one hand against the matched-name plate beside the half-raised gate. An aperture opened between the routes.
"We move the seal first." Tessa said. "Then we solve the next division."
The four living members lowered the carrying frame until the passage seal rested a handspan above the floor. Belda threaded rope through the frame and around two bronze posts beyond the gate. Min crossed first and used the line to keep the frame level. Orin and Tessa pushed from the chamber while Belda pulled from the far side.
The gate left too little space to stand.
