Chapter 2 - The safety of the forest

Sitting in peace Frank decided it was time to go home. He spends a lot of time here and knows the forest like the back of his hand. So when he saw a new large boulder leaning against the cliffside he was slightly surprised. 'Maybe an earth mutation created it? Or maybe it fell of the cliff? No its way too large or else there would have been a loud bang.' Walking closer he soon felt off about the situation. Why the hell would there be this giant of a rock right here? There would need to be at least three mid level mutations to make it. Hell, it was the size of some of the mansions he cleans up at.

Suddenly the only thing he felt was a sharp stinging pain going down his spine, did someone stab him? No. It wasn't actual pain, it was fear. Paralyzing him completely he just laid on the ground and tried to calm down. Why was he feeling this way all of the sudden?

"GREETINGS HUMANS. WE, THE GODS, HAVE DECIDED YOU HAVE BECOME FARMILIAR ENOUGH WITH YOUR 'GIFTS' AND WILL NOW BE BROUGHT INTO THE REAL WORLD. STATUS, RULES, DEBTS... ALL WILL BE RESET IN THE NEW WORLD. YOU MUST LEARN TO SURVIVE OR BE WIPED OUT. FEAR NOT, IN OUR INFINITE BENEVOLENCE WE HAVE GIVEN YOU THE SYSTEM, YOU WILL HAVE AN ADVANTAGE ONLY THE INTELLIGENT SPECIES ON THIS PLANET HAVE, THE GUIDE. THE GUIDE WILL HELP YOU ON YOUR PATH AND WILL GIVE YOU THE CHANCE TO BECOME STRONGER. GOOD LUCK, WE HOPE YOU LAST LONGER THAN THE LAST GROUP."

And just like that the pain in his spine disappeared. Well to be honest everything disappeared, his vision now blank. He didn't know how much time had passed or where he was. His mind was a calm mess and he barely could keep one thought before it drifted away into the abyss. It was almost peaceful, like in the forest but with a different unique feeling.

He tried to focus on that feeling, well he tried to focus on anything but there was barely anything he was able to keep in his mind before it drifted off into space. The feeling felt like the arms of his mother holding his child self, the warm air of the summer after a long day, the first bite of some strawberry rhubarb pie, but in a way it also felt like none of those things. It was something unique, something magical.

Drifting around in the emptiness Frank tried to control that feeling, the air, the smell, the feeling. All of it slowly rotated around him as if it wanted to become a part of him. Something that he was missing. Eventually it connected with his body... no he couldn't feel his body... it connected with his mind and worked its way through it rewiring everything.

Then everything stopped. And then everything continued, the pain, the fear, the strange feeling, the confusion, and then the calm. As all of those feelings faded into a calmer sense Frank realized that he was laying down in a field of tall green grass. He tried to stand up but his body felt sore all over. Working his way to a sitting position Frank grabbed at a nearby stone that jutted out of the ground.

Pulling himself up to a stand he looked around and tried to find out where he was. From what he remembered some "beings" calling themselves gods decided to throw them into the real world. 'The real world? Was our world like a test run then? Whatever I need to find safety and food. It also said that all intelligent life had something called the guide. That means that there is other intelligent life here.'

Looking to his left all he could see is forest forest and more forest. To his right and behind him was a stone road that lead to a great stone wall around 5 miles away. Looking around at what else he could see. Realizing that he is in the middle of nowhere with no idea how he got there Frank squatted back down. He didn't want any predators to attack him.

The safest bet would probably be heading towards the stone path to his right. Civilization was always better than being alone, even if he had access to his mutations. Deciding to walk along the path Frank thought of his options. He was in a new world full of uncertainties and dangers. He was alone without food or shelter. And most importantly he should have access to something called the guide. Hopefully it lives up to its name.

-Welcome to the world of paths user-

-Here your species will be able to gain power and evolve. This is the guide which you can open by thinking about it. You currently have access to the inventory, character sheet, and quests tab. Gaining more power or completing certain requirements will unlock more access to the guide.-

-Would you like to open your character sheet?-

"Meh... sure why not. Open character sheet."

As soon as he thought of opening it another small screen popped up in his vision. This screen containing a photo of himself, his basic info, and skills and innate powers.

Looking at his character sheet Frank didn't notice the grass moving from behind him. The dull green grass was pushed aside as a small bipedal creature walked towards him. "GGRAWWW," sprinting at Frank the small little creature swung its wooden stick at his head. Turning in time to see the greenish blue being try to attack him with a stick. "What the heck?" Frank said as he activated his innate power as he fell to the ground. Spikes formed at the handle of the stick, digging through the flesh of its hand the spikes pierced its arm and flowed up its arm. Like roots they dug into the flesh, draining the blood of the being on the floor.

"What the hell. How did I do that... did I do that?" Looking at the body in front of him he watched as the plants slowly dug into its upper body. Screaming on the ground it tried to scratch it off but to no avail. Eventually it stopped moving, the field quiet again except for some gagging sounds from Frank. Throwing up his lunch from a couple hours ago he tried to stand back. He had killed someone. Eventually he stood back up and looked at the body again. Had he really done that? He's never done anything like that before.

"All the more reason to get to civilization. What is this though?"

-Goblin Killed-

Hovering around his eye was an exp increase and a message. "Hey guide, what is this?"

Still slightly confused Frank just reopened his character sheet.

"Ugh... I hated every second of that. Why has that never happened before? Whatever I'll just head down this path. I should find SOMEONE at least to learn about where I am," Walking over to the path he started down towards the wall. He may not need riches but he did need to survive.

Walking further down the path Frank noticed that everything was eerily quiet. All the trees and grass stopped blowing and the wind stopped. He stopped walking and looked around, trying to find out if anything was wrong. Panicking that something was wrong he picked up a nearby stick and held it in front of him.

A whole 60 seconds passed until he felt the calm brush of the wind. The leaves brushing against the trees, nothing was wrong, he was just too paranoid. Then again he was just attacked by a small goblin. Coming from a peaceful world and shoved into an unknown land with no idea where he was he had a reason to be paranoid.

With a stick in hand and leaving the body behind him Frank started down the path towards the wall. His stomach empty and his feet hurting he hoped for some food or somewhere to rest. Maybe he could even find some meat, or at least berries. The stone walls standing in the distance improved Franks mood as at least some sort of intelligent life existed. Tomorrow was a new day and he will make it his.
