Chapter 36 - CHAPTER 36– Stormbound

Rain blurred the windshield until Courtney could barely see the taillights ahead of her. Chicago storms had a way of turning streets into rivers, and tonight was no exception. Her hands tightened around the steering wheel of the sleek black sedan—her assigned company car. The wipers thrashed back and forth, but they struggled to keep pace with the downpour. She muttered under her breath, biting her lip as the car jolted when she shifted gears.

Through her mirror, she caught sight of Dwayne's car trailing steadily behind. Even in the storm, his headlights cut through the night, unwavering, always there. The knowledge that he was following her both irritated and steadied her. Why did he feel the need to shadow her? Was it protectiveness or control? She hated how she couldn't tell the difference when it came to him.

The car gave a low cough, then sputtered.
